Creating a recovery on an external HDD USB disk

So I just bought my new HP pavilion dv6 laptop computer 6023tx and I need to create my partition HP recovery disc.

If theres a whole article here showing how do using a usb flash drive or USB key, I was just wondering if its possible to do using an external usb HARD drive, I have not so why wouldn't... creating a new 16gigs of score big and everything which makes it?

Article: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01890478

It costs $30 for a 16gig USB that is the size recommended but its only $50 for a portable 2.5 inch 500gig HDD, I just can't justify the purchase of thumb drive at these prices.

Many thanks for any help.

Well done to the dvd, should be all good.

    Hello

I already found a lot of discussions around the question how to increase free space on the SSD drive.

Is it possible to remove the recovery partition after you create a recovery key USB with the tool 'Create a Toshiba Recovery media'?
    No risk?

If it would be possible, how it is possible to assign the space gained on the C: partition?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

    > Is an option to remove the recovery partition after you create a recovery key USB with the tool 'create a Toshiba Recovery media "?
    > No risk?

Well, the recovery partition would create again when the laptop recovery procedure using disk recovery or the flash memory stick recovery

So if you want to remove the 2nd partition, you must create this disc/USB stick recovery before changing something on the HARD drive.

  • Dell DataSafe - 'Create System Recovery' does not recognize my USB flash drive

    Hello

I just set up my new laptop Inspiron and 'Dell DataSafe Local Backup Basic Edition' pops up advising me to "Create system recovery media" restore my system to its critical failure of hard disk factory settings.

It gives me the option to save this on a disk or a USB Flash drive.  I have a drive hard laptop "Western Digital My Passport Essential' that I would use for this, that's why I chose the option of USB Flash drive.  However, I get a message "no USB key not found.

Can someone tell me what I need to do to store the backup recovery system on my laptop hard drive?  (I know a recordable DVD will be probably easier, but I did not and do not want to buy a bunch of them just for that!)

    Hello

Have you tried to update the drivers of USB port?

    You should try this;
-Disconnect all USB devices the USB ports.
-Go to the Device Manager and remove all the USB root hub and all USB host controllers.
    -Restart the laptop

After this procedure, the Windows operating system should recognize and should install the USB ports again. After restarting again you must connect only USB devices and must verify if they will work properly!

I set the BIOS to look at USB first, and it has GRUB on the external, I checked and repaired. When I use a flash drive to boot from, everything is okay, no problem, but when you try to start the tray spins hard drive it's a no go. Someone at - he had an idea of what I can do? Answers appreciated.

    Hello

As far as I know the USB HDD store contains a tool that is compatible with the Windows operating system. Maybe the software can't MacOS.

Maybe you can disable this by using a Windows operating system:
Connect your HARD drive to the Windows (Win XP, VISTA or Win7 PC)
Select the CD drive with your browser (password)
    Run the ONSPCLCK.exe
    Select 'Options '.
    Select "Disable security password"
Enter your password for current or don t set passwords
    Unplug the HARD drive
    Connect the HDD for Mac

    Maybe it would work...

  • Recovery disk for a T130: Re-create the recovery disk

    Hello

I own a Toshiba T130, white model that comes with Windows 7 x 64, 4 GB of RAM and a DVD player. I recently tried to install a Linux operating system through a process that is automated via a network installation (Shoemaker), which has actually wiped clean the hard drive before installing the system, contrary to my intention at first actually install it on a separate partition, along side windows!

It happens that (day 1, after having bought the laptop), I have already saved/stored the folder of HARD disk recovery (integer) initially placed on a second partition in Windows 7, on an external USB hard drive, but did not have a DVD or USB recovery media as it is recommended. The content of the file is as follows:

    + HDDRecovery
    + ODDFiles
    | + Start
    | + EFI
    | + HDDPREP
    | + HTMPREP
    | + Sources
    | + Tools
    + OriSetenv
    + Swing
    | 10347XSP.swm
    | 10347XSP2.swm
    | 10347XSP3.swm
    | 1034...
    | 10347XSP8.swm

I think that these files are what is needed to create a recovery media and I have a need to restore my computer to its original state and recreate my Windows 7 environment. After all, it is here where I get my work.

So, you guys don't know if I can build a support of restoring these files? If so, what is the procedure?

    Thank you very much
    Waiting for your response.

As far as I know is now too late for the creation of recovery disks. If I remember well in s manuals is clearly described that you can install OS using only two procedures: using installation of recovery of HARD drive or using created the recovery DVDs (connected external USB optical disc drive).

I'm 99.9% sure that the installation of the external HARD disk is not possible.

  • Problem creating a recovery on HP Ultrbook

    Hello

I tried to create a collection set on my HP Ultrabook for months.

The procedure works well until I need to insert media. This is the problem because the media is not able to reconginise even if the same media has been used to back up my file on the same lap all the time.

The media have a lot of empty space (about 150 GB)

I can assess the documents in the media

Now, this problem could be critical because I might need to engage in the recovery, due to several errors that occur at this time.

    See you soon

    EUB

    Hello

Looking at the free space you mention for this media, am I correct in assuming that this is an external HARD drive?

If that is correct, then this is what is causing the problem as the recovery media creation application does not support creating a recovery on an external HARD drive media, you will need to use a (usually 32 GB) usb flash drive.

    Kind regards

    Hello

One of the restrictions on the Recovery Media Creator application is that it will only allow recovery of files to write on removable media - USB Flash or DVD player.  He can't (and won't recognise) fixed units, be they internal or external.

A document from HP regarding the creation of a recovery media can be found on the following link.

    http://support.HP.com/us-en/document/c03481733

    Note:

If you decide to create our media recovery on a USB Flash drive, it must be of a type that Windows 8.1 considers as a 'removable disc' - do everything and there is no totally reliable way to tell who will run until they are connected.  For example, in the image below, the USB flash drive Dave (G) watch as a player 'fixed' and will not work, so that the removable disk (H) flash drive ' will work.

Thanks to @erico the following USB Flash Drives are known to work:

  • Toshiba 1 TB portable HDD USB 3.0 Stor.E questions

    Hi all

Bought a Toshiba Stor.E partner 1 TB external HDD USB 3.0 for my wife for the advent of ebay. Use it on an Optiplex GX620 under Windows XP (SP3) via a USB 2.0 port that I bought it and in the future will be able to make use of USB 3.0

I tried to format the HARD disk of 1 TB straight on the box and it took forever to get to the stage 13% (20 min) = when he started just turn off and on, immediately... it's 5 times until I cancelled the format and once I did he remained for about 4-5 minutes before it is rotated to the bottom of his...

So I did a quick format, which went well with no stop downs which took about 1-2 minutes of dishes...

So I put a 1 GB on it .avi file to see how it will play and it went well until what 5 minutes in the video when I noticed a sudden break of the video for a milli second or 2 - enough to be frustrating. Then I heard the car apparently closed (a snoring and a stop of the head... apparently, although the file was still play)-even if I heard the spin in the car down and maybe stop he kept playing the file, but a break of milli seconds every 2-3 seconds of reading file - it would be the nspin upward once again and after 3-4 minutes turning down strong enough... (no sanding, etc. or click, just a loud snoring with a sort of stop the sound)

The file plays fine out of the Office for 30 minutes, so forget the system - the same file plays very well from my Maxtor external drive on the same USB port.

Tried the 1 TB of HDD on my Panasonic TH - L42ET5A LED LCD TV and played previews apparently ok but I could hear a beep from the command every 3-4 seconds... and it didn't sound right and seemed to be all of a sudden stop and restart...

The fact, that it cannot format wihtout shutting down/restarting and can not play a video file without a break every 2-3 seconds means that it wont be good enough for me...

Note: on the same USB 2.0 port I use all my other USB drives work = very well no problem...

Is - this disc a lemon?

I hear that after July 2012, Toshiba has changed the firmware or the Commission on these discs of style and others in this forum have similar problems with stop/stop suddenly the rotation disc = however, this one is set up I think that's not a good set upwards.

I'm not quite sure of the issue described, but strange noises from a HARD m disc would be a sign of failure of the HARD drive
On the other hand, the HARD drive is a HARD drive 3.0 and it must 900mA on the bus power.
The USB 2.0 port allows only to 500mA.

I m not very well if this may be the reason here, but you should try to use the HDD with USB 3.0 or to a hub USB extended in the contrary case, it may be a HARD drive problem.

  • Can I create a recovery bootable USB through disk utility?

My HARD drive is dying, I can't access my Macintosh HD partition anymore and I can't reinstall OS because I SMART errors. Before the format and reinstall the attempt to load slow my computer, random errors, etc. So I definitely think that the HARD drive is near death. My plan is to replace my HDD for a Virgin SSD, I perform this task several times on computers of the victory but for MAC, I wonder how I will load the new OS. Can I make a bootable USB with the recovery partition, but on a USB key tools? Unofrtunately I have more available Mac to create the USB bootable through itunes.

My computer is the MacBook Pro (13-inch mid 2010), I have also all original packaging somewhere, if there is a CD that I can use, I certainly can get too.

    Any advice?

    Thank you!

Apple have this to do a USB installation...

Create an installer for OS X - Apple support bootable

Another option is to use the diskmakerx.com application

You must have the OS installer downloaded to make these methods of work is probably not practice on your failed drive.

Both of these options are to run a 'normal' operating system too. The recovery partition is not 'normal '.

Another option is to use the Internet recovery mode if your Mac supports...

Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery - Apple Support

On macOS recovery - Apple Support

Use wired ethernet for best results, since it will download a bootable OS & then download the installer of the OS also.

I suspect you have the update of the firmware installed to add this feature if it has been updated over the last 3 years

You may be able to generate a score of alternative recovery to another disk (such as a USB key) If you want to just "compensation of base OS.

OS X: on Recovery Disk Wizard - Apple Support

A last solution would be to clone your drive failing on an external drive (or use the new SSD in a proper case). That can be done in the modes of recovery via disk utility. Basically, you use a feature to "restore" to clone one volume to another. (I don't see clear instructions for the moment so ask if you want to pursue this option).

  • NB100 - How can I create a recovery on a USB CD?

    Hi friends,

I recently got a NB100 with XP home. The operating system has been reinstalled and did not have any CD of the operating system.

I'm doing the recovery usb disk and it will not be exceeded the stadium to choose between creating DVD or usb drive.  I use a new usb key.

    Hello

It may be down to the type of flash player, you have.

If the flash drive is listed as "Windows compatible 8" may not be used - the reason is that the creation of HP recovery media software is seeking a device marked Win 8 compatible show as internal drives flash drives and external .

In the example below, the 32 Gb flash drive USB 'Dave G' shows as a drive hard internal who can not be used, while the USB flash drive "Removable disc H" would work.

  • HDD USB not recognized as "physical1" when creating the new virtual machine

    Hi all

I wanted to create a new virtual machine, and I wanted to use my USB as a physical drive.

But Workstation shows me "physical0" which is of course my drive internal.

I tried USB pen drives. They are not recognized either.

This somehow is no longer supported? I would have that it would be possible to use USB external HDD as the physical drive to a new virtual machine.

    you have installed VirtualBox?

If so, you can try to use the virtuaklbox command line tool to create a descriptor of rawdisk for this disc.

say diskpart on this drive? -It is "online"?
