Deleting comments VM to host on ESXi 3.5

Hi all

I have an ESXi host VMware 3.5 with 2 comments Windows 2003 server on it systems. About 5 months ago, I came across a problem with the host because I initiated a few shots short of disk space. It caused the two systems to stop and even if I don't remember all the steps that I took at the time, I ended up creating a 3rd guest vm and moved the 2 files to disk vmdk 1 vm comments troubled the new virtual machine to comments. The second vm of comments, I myself turn once again with no problems. Doing this, that I could get the troubled host that is running again and I now want to delete the old vm comments that had the power turned off and don't use it. I know how to remove a guest virtual computer (right-click on the virtual machine and choose Remove in the disc) but when I start the process, it gives a warning message. The part that worries me the most is the part that says: "Please note if other vm share this basic disk, they won't have access to this disk." There are currently no drive associated with this machine vmdk virtual comments and when you browse the data store you see no disk in the guest virtual machine folder. The hardware configuration for the virtual machine only shows memory and CPU.

Before deleting this vm disk prompt, that I wanted to make sure that it is has nothing in any file of configuration, always associated with the VM comments troubled which can make finding the original vmdk disks (since they are always the same, but now in a different location) and delete because at some point, they were associated with the guest virtual computer troubled. I don't need to have my new vm work comments die because somehow he finds these discs and deleted when I delete the old vm comments troubled. While it seems that in the folder created when the guest virtual computer was built and deletes the files in this folder only, I should be OK since I moved the disks for the new folder, rather than simply plug them in their original location.

Please let me know your thoughts and thanks for your help. I know I can do a backup before performing this deletion (I have the Veeam backup free version) but a single disc is 60 GB and the other is 25 GB for any virtual machine backup takes about 5 hours.

I could do this-

I guess another way to clean up this would be to browse the data store and go to the folder of the node I want to delete and delete all the files, then delete the folder. After that I can remove the server from the inventory since there is no longer any folder or files stored on the drive. It seems that this would actually do the same thing but I don't know if there is any other household who will miss him when removing a server in this way, that's why my preference was to choose the server to remove from the disk method.

Should I move the virtual machines from the first RAID at one of the others? Whipe then come out the scores and perform ESXi 4.1 installation?

Yes, it's a way to do this.

Unfortunately, the ESXi 4.1 installation wipe the disk to complete installation (or logical volume) as you have experienced. Assuming that "logical partitions VMFS" you mentioned are logical volumes actually created in the RAID configuration (presented as individual of the operating system disks), you can migrate the virtual machine that is currently stored on data store of the installation disk to a data store on one of the other logical disks and then install ESXi.

VMware Converter does not work for me because it does not migrate the shots, nor can I use the sulition backup that I currently use.

I can't use OVF for the same reason.

A possible solution coud be temporarily add the old ESXi host vSphere 5.0 for the time needed to migrate the computer virtual infrastructure: is it possible?

Another solution could be downloading files containing the virtual machines from the VMFS data store managed by the former host of ESXi 3.5 in a Windows folder and download for the data managed by the ESXi 5.0 host store, but I strongly suspect that it does not.

    Is there an alternative?

I think that the copy will be the way to go in this case. You can take a look at of Veeam FastSCP for this work.

After copying the files, you should be able to add the virtual machine to inventory (right-click the file .vmx in browser data store) and turn on.

  • The upgrade of the host, VMware ESXI 4.1

    Hello

I am running a host VMware ESXi 4.1. It seems that VMware claims now this product VMware vSphere Hypervisor (am I right?). Was it a name change purely marketing, or they introduce new functions as well? Is VSphere Hypervisor a more recent version of ESXi

Is there a tool to upgrade VMware ESXi 4.1 for newer versions (no matter if their output yet or not, just wondering about the upgrade in general)?

    Thanks in advance!

Don't worry, it's all the same. You have the same binary files for all editions of ESXi, it is only the license key that locks or unlocks features. I think that the main reason why VMware decided to call ESXi free edition "Hypervisor" was because many people were confused that ESXi is free or not.

There are two upgrade options ESXi. For the first, you must have a licensed version of vCenter Server, which offers the "Update Manager". The second is to use the command line utility "vihostupdate".

In addition, you can take a look at http://www.vm-help.com/esx41/Patching_4.1_with_the_host_update_utility.php

    Hello

How can one know if an ESXi host is ESXi free, or if it is allowed?

I searched through the crowd on a couple of different configurations and I don't see anything obvious that indicates this.  I ask because there are some features that only work on ESXi under license and would like to be able to detect the server type I'm talking about.

I guess that there is a way to do so under the ha - Manager of licenses.

    Thank you

    Eric

The method that I use to check for this in my scripts is to use the licenseManager watch ownership licenses and see if the license is equivalent to "esxBasic", the host is ESXi, if both these things are true, then you are using the free version of ESXi. In my view, there is another method in which the free version does not contain the full name of some kind, but I forgot what it was. If the above solution worked for me for some time and is simple to check

If I put in place an openfiler VM as a data store iSCSI & vmfs on two ESXi hosts, both ESXi hosts can access two data warehouses?

The reason why I ask, is that I have two hosts ESXi ESXi 4 running.  I do my backups with ghettoVCB, which I modified to create thin backups on one of the drives the.  I then wput them to the server, which causes them to become thick.  Directly targets the backup in a vmfs iSCSI on the server in the face shop.  It would save a step and the vmdk backup should remain thin.

    Thank you!

The short answer is Yes. If you allow the ESX servers to see the LUN. This setting is configured to the Openfiler.

  • Comments cannot ping host

    Hi all:

I have a strange problem of networking that VMware technical support has not been able to help.

Summary of the problem: comments cannot ping host unless the host is a ping command, while the guest is ping to the host

Details of the problem: I have intalled VMware Workstation 6.5.2 on the host Windows Vista Edition Home Premium (SP1). I installed several guests, including Ubuntu 8.04, openSUSE 11, Win XP and Win 2000. All guests use "bridged" network. The host has a static IP address. All guests have DHCP. All these people have the same problem - they cannot ping the host. It simply returns "Destination unreachable". However, if I run a ping from the host (it didn't ping the same customer, any ip address on the network) while the guest is ping to the host, and then will cross ping of the guest. For the next two minutes, the guest will be able to ping the host without any problem (without 'help' of the host). Then the guest will again be able ping on the host and you will have to repeat the same process. Quite strange, isn't? Another problem, I can access the internet from the hosts and guests can ping each other. (I can't access the printer connected to the host. However if the guest can ping on the host, then it can also access the printer as well.) I tried everything but still can't find the root cause of the problem. Here is a list of the things I've tried:

    1. tried VMware Workstation 6.5.2 on a Windows XP computer on the same network (equipped with a wireless card intel) and did NOT have this problem.

    2. firewalls, antivirus software, VPN clients, etc. were all off. It did not help.

    3. the problem disappears if I use the wired Ethernet connection

    4. the current wireless adapter is a D-Link, but I also tried with a Linksys Wireless card and had the same problem

    5. the same problem exists also for VMware 6.5.1

    6. I have installed the software VirtuaBox VM from Sun and installed the same comments from Ubuntu on the same host. The problem goes away!

    7. I also tried the "NAT" networking and had the same problem.

    8. I also tried DHCP for host and had the same problem.

I've tried everything I can think of and nothing seemed to help. I have filed a request for assistance with VMware tech and traded a few emails with the support guy but have not heard from him for a few days. I would really appreciate if someone can offer a few ideas to help solve this problem. I'm not a networking guru, but I'm a software engineer, so you can talk to me in technical terms.

    Thank you in advance.

Yes! as noted above, it is the arp tables.

my router is assigned the same IP address for the host computer and the guest, so as soon as you ping from your host prompt, the mac and ip is back in the arp (invites) tables and from there he will communicate via newly assigned ARP table. You can check this scathing the hostname and it will be the same ip address as your guest (in my case)

I then googled arp vmware and discovered that it is familir with chipset broadcom and vmware behavior.

ARP - a displays the tables,

ARP s 00-00-00-00-00-00 192.168.x.xxx - assign the IP address to a MAC address.

    I hope this helps.

  • Update comments before the host tools

    Hello

Our backup software (TSM for EV) checks if the VMWare Guest tools are 'in progress', before you perform the backup of the application.

This means that when we improve a host for the new version, the backup of the application of all the virtual machines on the host will fail, until the tools are upgraded.

However, the cheque will go through if the comment tools version is newer than the version of the host.

    Then...

Is it possible to orchestrate the tools update to a newer version than the tools on the host?

(In addition to using a single host 'host jump' update for updates, and migration of virtual machines on that host one).

    Best regards

    Martin

Is it possible to orchestrate the tools update to a newer version than the tools on the host?

Yes, it's possible and fully supported to run versions of VMware Tools in the guests who are more recent than the ESXi host versions. For example, you can use the latest tools of U1 6.0 even on the hosts 5.x. see: product VMware interoperability matrices

To obtain and deploy the latest tools, you have a couple of different options available; you don't need to bother with a "host of jump' or whatever it is.

    1. just update the package tools-light of your guests, for example with MUV. This beautiful thing is this can be done online and requires no maintenance mode or a reboot of the host. Make sure that no virtual machine currently has VMware Tools mounted ISOs.

2 extract the ISOs tools the bundle version (patch) of target offline or installing ESXi ISO.

3 download https://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/index.htmlTools packages. These correspond exactly to those of the packages included in the packages offline (patch) or installation ISOs. (Just get the .exe files big, no need to enter an ISO.)

4 download the new standalone version 10.x of the tools of:

    https://my.VMware.com/group/VMware/details?downloadGroup=VMTOOLS1005&ProductID=491

    http://pubs.VMware.com/Release_Notes/en/VMwareTools/1005/VMware-tools-1005-release-notes.html

Personally, I prefer not to bother with the ISOs editing or updating through the vSphere Client interfaces, but using an automated custom installation with the package of relevant tools like this:

C:\VMware-tools-9.4.12-2627939-x86_64.exe/v number! REINSTALLMODE = vomus ADDLOCAL = DELETE all the Audio, BootCamp, FileIntrospection, Hgfs, NetworkIntrospection, Unity REBOOT = ReallySuppress

This also some unnecessary components like unity, which are available on the position of work/Fusion/player, and eliminates a forced reboot.

    Any other suggestions?

The host itself needs little memory too, which is not available for virtual machines. Please take a look at the 'Resources' of the virtual host tab to see how much memory is available for virtual machines. There is also an overload of memory you need to take into account for the power on the virtual machine. Assignment of a bit more memory to the VM ESXi (~4.5GB) should do.
