Deletion of snapshots to recover from data store space

ESXi 4.1

I have an ESXi host Miss space on one of its data warehouses. No 911 short, but short enough so that something needs to be done in a few weeks. On this data store, we created snapshots of some servers Exchange 2010 hosted before installing a custom Microsoft patch. So we have a server HUB, CASES and MB each with a single shot of several months that we will never have to come back. In this navigation data store, some of these 00001.vmdk files are huge, almost up to the size of the player it is a snapshot of. I believe it happened when we had backup problems and drive full of balls of trans.

In any case, I want to remove these snapshots in snapshot Manager on each of those virtual machines by selecting the snapshot and hit delete. The problem is I've read different information about what will happen. Some of the information I've read says even this will take even MORE space. I don't know how that's possible, but I wanted to get in the forums before doing anything.

Delete the snapshots will delete all files in capture instant hard, recovering a ton of space on the data store?

TIA!

The OMI 30 GB should be enough. When you delete the snapshot with the virtual machine, a snapshot of assistance is created, which will consume disk space necessary for any change, even if the current snapshot is being deleted more ~ 4GB for the snapshot file (.vmsn).

With the virtual machine off, you will not need any addiitonal disk sapce. However, you won't be able to turn on the virtual machine again, until it's finished!

  • Cannot add new vmdk to vm from data store space free

    Hello

    what I am doing wrong?

When trying to add new vmdk of VM (SQL) of free space to store data, I get an error. See attach...

I tried 19GB, 18 GB, and even 10GB... the same error. As you can see there is 19.46 GB of free space on the data store.

    Thank you.

chances are you have snapshots or Exchange memory files using this space.

Best practices of VMware is to leave 25 + % free on your VMFS volumes.

  • Flat VMDK files after trying to delete files from data store

I tried to delete a VMDK file in a data store, because I thought that it was not in use, and I need space. I couldn't get the VM you are looking for the name of the VMDK file, so I thought that the VM has disappeared. Turns out that someone had renamed the virtual machine, when it was actually being used, so I could not remove the VMDK file.

I searched for the files with Powershell in a data store, and that's how I found this mysterious file in the first place.

After giving me the error that it couldn't be deleted, the file does not appear in the search more and the name of the file has been replaced by *-dish. VMDK, I think, and the column by specifying the Type just said file, instead of virtual disk. In addition, files not included in the research more.

Today, a day after, everything is back to normal. Everyone knows this behavior before and could tell me what happened?

Each virtual disk is actually 2 files: VMname.vmdk and VMname - flat hard

Unfortunately, the data store browser displays only the VMname... VMDK, but it gives the properties of VMname - flat hard. Use PuTTY, connect to the ESXi host via ssh, navigate to the folder of the virtual machine and use: the - lahtr to list the contents of an authoritarian way. You can also run: - ch to check actual use.

  • Snapshot of a different data store

    Hello

    Quick question for the community.

Suppose I have 2 data warehouses and A VM is located in the data store 1. I can take a snapshot of the machine and I have this snapshot can be found on the data store 2?

My understanding was I could not easily do this but our service provider said that's the way it works and I'll try to find a documented method, support to do so.

    All responses will be appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Richard

Incorrect, it is advisable, and applies by default to store the snapshots in the same data store in which the VMDK resides in, but he did not.

You can edit the .vmx VM to store snapshots on a different data store, this can be useful if you run lack of space on the data store, which resides in your virtual machine.

9 my Windows update does not work. It is said to open "Datastore" and del; files allow you updates. When I try to open the data store in a first time, I wonder what program to use, and then said "can not open because it is used by another program."  This Windows Vista bit. I can't install Explorer 9 until I have a workaround. Help.

What is the exact error code or error message?

I suggest to reset the Windows update components and then try to check updates, and then install the updates and check if it helps.

  • Web Client 5.5 - How to download files from data store?

I can't get the file download of data storage works on my 5.5 b vcenter webclient. When you browse the datastore folder / there are only buttons to install the Plugin for integration Client, refresh, new folder and delete. The plugin is installed and I tried to use IE11 and Chrome.

It is a known issue and the workaround is to use an older version of the Mozilla Firefox browser.

    From the release notes: https://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere5/doc/vsphere-vcenter-server-55u1-release-notes.html#knownissues

Integration of client plug-ins can not work as expected if you log the vSphere Web Client using Internet Explorer 11 *.

If you log the Web Client using Internet Explorer 11 vSphere, the following problems may occur when you perform tasks related to the Client plugin integration:

    • Even if the Client integration plugin is installed, the following message appears when you try to import or to export a model from the FVO:
      Download the plugin Client integration
    • File browser does not download or download a file from the data store.
    • You can't get images of the CD/DVD drive.
    • The console of the virtual machine you may see a black screen with the following error message:
Remote console is not properly installed

Solution: use Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or earlier versions of Internet Explorer to access the Web Client vSphere. You can also use vSphere Client instead of vSphere Web Client to work around this problem.

  • VM does not far from data store

    Hello

    I'm under 5.1 and 5.1 ESXi vcenter

These days I use storage vMotion to organize my warehouses... well but I have 3 data warehouses where I move 4 virtual machines to another data store (new size 3 TB of dastore)

but they are still recorded in the source data store where there is nothing in this old data store: no CDROM ISO, no file VMX, all virtual disks are in the new data store

The old navigation data store shows nothing related in this datastore with these virtual machines.

no idea what could cause this problem when I move completely these virtual machines to the new data store, but they will still show in the old

    Thank you very much

Data warehouses reasons other than the data store 'House' is displayed are:

    • the entries in the settings of the virtual machine (image .iso for CD-ROM drive, .flp images to floppy drives)
    • Active snapshots, where such a link existed at the time you created the snapshot

  • VM with disks of different data warehouses. Snapshots on the same data store?

    Hello

We have several virtual machines with disks on different data stores for reasons RAID.

Last night, we found that the snapshots of all disks are left on the data store main vmx and not on each datastore disk.

How will we change this as our OS data warehouses are small and run out of space when running shadow copies?

    Thank you

    Frogbeef

You can change the location of snapshots, but they will all go to this place - as far as I know, you cannot change the location of each disk.

The KB http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1002929 explains how to do this.

  • Remove a number from data store

I am trying to remove a data store, so I can re add increasing the size of the block. the problem is that it is to say that the data store is in use. I removed all virtual machines of this datasore. refreshed. Disconnect and screw. Restart the esxi host is next to impossible that he is in a production environment with 10 virtual machines running. all ideas

    Mark

Do you have other files (ISO etc.) on this data store?

It looks like one of the natures of the virtual machine have a reference in the data store.

Perhaps an orphan VM, which is still in the inventory or one currently powered off VM with a reference to the data store.

  • Data store space lost

One time, I decided to apply a series of updates to one of my ESX 3.5 servers to consider update 1-day 3.  Once this process was completed and the server rebooted I found that server has complained of having no data warehouses.  Via vCenter, I checked the section storage cards to verify that the target has been classified there correrctly for the HP Smart Array E200i with the appropriate size for the local drive based storage.  Then, I went to the storage section and attempted to add the new storage, but the system did not all available to add.  If I do this last piece using the VI client that connects directly to the host instead of vCenter, the partition appears when I select new storage.  I canceled that because I didn't know if I chose to add if I would lose data.

Then, I connect to the supreme court on the host and interpreted the following-

fdsisk-l shows that I'm missing my third partition, / dev/cciss/c0d0p3.

Displays only the vmhba0 esxcfg-vmhbadevs /dev/cciss/c0d0 but nothing else.

I have the impression that the partition is still there but identification information has been corrupted or deleted?  I've attached a screenshot of the above information.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It seems that the old VMFS partition has been deleted for some reason any. However, because you do not have recreted data store, you should have the actual data.

    Follow the steps below.

    (1) run fdisk/dev/cciss/c0d0

    (2) press on ' don't

    (3) select the "primary" partition type and partion without 3 If prompted.

    (4) start the partition '1281' and '34350'

    (5) select 't' to change the partition type and "fb" like partition type.

    (6) save the partition layout and exit the fdisk with 'w '.

    (7) perform vmkfstools v (note uppercase V)

    (8) vdf should show you your lost VMFS volume.

Let me know if it helps.

  • provisiond data store space does not match with the space of the VMs

    Hi guys,.

I have the particular phenomenon on my cVenter environment. Space brought into service on data warehouses does not correspond with the really used capacity of the virtual machines.

    Details:
    VCenter: VMware vCenter 6.0.0 3634793
    ESXi: ESXi 5.5.0, 3568722
    Storage: The Netapp Cluster Mode
    NFS data warehouses

Virtual machines allocate more space such as assigned. It could be 100% more space. There are no files that are responsible for this in the data store. We have allowed efficiency of storage which means on the Netapp deduplication.
In the opinion of vCenter - the data store has a provisiond about 1 TB space and really about 550 GB space (space of each unique virtual machine).

You know this problem or something like that?

    Best regards

Thanks for your replies, but it's a feature of Netapp called fractional reserve.

This reserved feature 0% or 100% of the space.

Has anyone experiences with the option of fractional reserve and volumes NFS for ESXi? What is the best value for this?

  • Data store space used not maching between VMWare and 3PAR

    Hello world

I have a strange behavior between our environment VMWare and 3PAR storage system.

I checked each data store of our cluster and for each of them, the space used in vSphere Client does not match the size of the user 'used' their volume associated with 3PAR.  The value displayed in VMware is higher.

For example, our data store named DS03 has space around 1 TB in VMWare.  And when I checked in the Console of 3PAR, I see that the volume created for this data store has a size of the user 'used' 722 GB.

While doing some research, I came across this post: ability to store data about the free space is not the same thing in VMware and 3PAR

But the problem I encounter is quiet different. It's the opposite. I do not understand why the displayed value is higher in VMWare...  We are also running vSphere Server version 5.1.0

    Any advice? Ideas?

    Thank you very much.

It's the ASIC 3PAR inline zero detection function stripping zeros of incoming data until they land on the disc. Www.3parug.com try this happens a lot.

  • How to recover the data store of VMware using EQL Volume snapshot (smart copy)?

Hi, I use VMware Std 5.1.0b on Dell EQL 6100 series.

I have a question where my datastore (2 VMs) VM are stored in one of the Volumes EQL. I had created smart copies weekly.

I tried to recover by creating a volume "cloned" by using one of the smart copies. That's why I would have 2 exact same volumes in EQL (one is updated and the other is 1 week old).

I can rename them running EQL EQL centenarians. But it doesn't seem to be a way for me to get old EQL volume to vCenter.

-J' have re-scanned the ESXi for databases and I tried to add, but he can't just see volumes

Is there a step I missed that "deletes" and ID that distinguishes EQL-current and old EQL?

When ASM creates stereotypes that they are defined in read ONLY. Make sure that you change this read-write in the first group Manager graphical user interface.  Then rescan.  The LVM. EnableResignature will not work unless it is read-write.

  • Info from data store based on the location of the data center

    Hello

I wrote a powershell script to get the amount of free space available in the stores of data butthis is too high

I need the information broken down according to the opinion of the 'data warehouses' with the virtual Center

EG - my eyes record data centre as

    X-x-x-x-x-x-x data warehouses

    Teir 2

    X-x-x-x-x-x-x-x data warehouses

    Teir 3

    X-x-x-x-x-x-x-x data warehouses

    Can someone please

Altogether.  The problem has to do with the Canal works and references that you are trying to use the output the way.  There are several ways to handle this, and I think that it can do what you want.

    Get-Datacenter  |  Foreach-Object { $dc=$_; $dc | Get-Datastore | Select-Object @{name="DC Name"; expression={$dc.name}},Name,FreeSpaceMB,CapacityMB}
