Dell Dimension does not start in Vista after upgrade

A friend had a Dell Dimension E521 that won't start - has the missing file system\hal.dll.

As there was nothing on this computer, he needed, I rebuilt it install a new copy of Windows XP, used the upgrade disc closed for upgrade to Vista and ensured everything in its original package has been installed. Let him install the Windows updates at night and in the morning, after a reboot it indicated that there is an update available. I'm going through the boot process, but as soon as it is the screen black with the Microsoft Corporation and the (green?) bar he starts moving forward a very small amount, and then restarts. It comes up with the selection of Windows startup screen and I tried the secure boot and last good Configuration known without result.

I tried the original XP disc to do a repair, but this doesn't seem to work with Vista?

How can I recover a work computer or do I have to reinstall again?

If you have installed Windows Vista good the first time that the hard drive should be fine however I would suggest running the Dell diagnostics just to be safe. To do this follow the instructions on page 405 of this document and perform extensive tests.

What video card you have? Have you tried to remove the video card and running using the onboard video? Have you installed Service Pack 1 before the system drivers?

    I agree with feliks.
    The module is not compatible and not taken in charge can be responsible for your problem.
    The best way is to use the Toshiba recommended of the memory modules.

    Sorry to hear about the sentence. There are a number of things to try. First, try the procedure described in this HP support document on Vista won't start do not.

    If you can, try to perform a System Restore or System Recovery.

    If you still cannot start and cannot access the System Recovery Wizard, you can order HP recovery disks (see the section on CD - ROM order page).

    Updated 15 edge of Win8.1 to Win10 today. Everything was fine, then an installation file is stuck so I held the power button for a forced stop. When I turn on again, I get nothing, just a blank screen. (I couldn't even Lenovo logo) After an another power cycles, I saw a screen for "automatic repair", then he went and I'm still stuck on a white screen, noise from the hard drive, it is not read.

    I also tried to boot "Windows boot manager" and hard drive, both got white screen.

    Any help?

    P.s. I upgraded to Win10 once a factory reset to Win8.1, so I do a factory reset, but it seems impossible to get to the option more.

  • Dell Inspiron does not go in GRUB after the stop of Kubuntu

    I bought a new Dell Inspiron 15 3000 (Ubuntu) laptop and installed Kubuntu 15.10. No dual-boot. Kubuntu only.

    Everything seems to work... with one exception: after closing down (or restarting) of KDE/Kubuntu, laptop computer does not successfully start only once.

    When I shut down the system, everything seems ok. Then when you press the power button, I see the Dell logo for a short period of time (as a kind of progress downstairs bar) as usual. Then the screen flashes in different shades of black, nothing more. No GRUB menu. In this pressing situation ++ restart the laptop and GRUB is reached and everything works fine. Following restarts (without having to boot into Kubuntu) works also without problem. However as soon as I have boot into Kubuntu and start/stop from there to the next single boot of the laptop will fail.

    Any idea what the problem might be?

    I have my older Dell laptop which stop the other day and I thought that the battery had just missed completely, plugged in left to load and when I got home it turns any. New laptop for my son has had this problem and tech support had me press and repeatly F key and I think that either press and hold the power button or press the key and let go?     I suggest you follow the steps below, first to release any static power in the laptop which may cause this problem:

    1. remove the battery and the laptop AC adapter.
    2. press and hold the Power button for 20 seconds and release.
    3 reconnect the battery, AC adapter, and then press the power button.
    4. the laptop must turn if static is the cause.

    You can press the "Fn" key and the "Power" button to run the hardware diagnostics if the laptop does not power on after following the steps above.

    Looks like the partition is damaged. I fear that even a repair check does not work, the best that we can suggest is reinstalling new windows.

  • XW4400 does not start. Occurred after the power to the system off for 2 weeks. Now, does not start. Help!

    As noted above in the subject... exploded with power for about 2 weeks supply.  On his return the

    system won't start.  It keeps going in a circle.

    Here's what happens;

    (1) it goes to the window HP

    2) immediately goes to a window stating "windows did not start properly. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. "Then on and other causes.  Well, none of them took place.

    To the bottom of the window there's several options to try.  Safe mode, Safe Mode Networking, last known successful... and start normally.  All the options have been tried several times.  To 30 sec timer waiting for your choice.  NONE OF THE OPTIONS WORK.  Cannot start in any mode.  After all of the selections it shows;

    (3) a flash of the microsoft windows screen and then we go back to number 1.

    I can't help with your problem, because in this case, my recommendation would be to reinstall the operating system.

    What I can do, is give you information to get a set of recovery discs for your xw4400 for only $10 USD.
