  The reason that this, your printer is actually not to damage the internal parts.  Mainly the printhead.  It is built in integrated security to help protect your investment.  HP, as other printer manufacturers, offers you with permanent print heads printers requiring ink for all colors, avoid the print heads. HP, like some other manufacturers, also offers printers with user replaceable print heads. These may or may not require ink in all colors in print, even though damage may occur if the print from the cartridge empty. Finally, HP as some other manufacturers also offers printers with the printhead into the ink supply. He is replaced at each change of cartridge. These printers will happily print with a diet low, empty or many deleted completely same models.  I understand that it can be very annoying, but it's a necessary.

  Unfortunately, the printer does not print until the replacement of the yellow ink. There is no work around for low ink message.

  This printer takes individual ink cartridges (IIC), and this ink delivery system requires that all cartridges to be installed for the printer to work. You can set the printer to "Using black ink only", but that must be done before a cartridge is exhausted, that the printer inks for other uses in fairest impression. It also uses the ink for the maintenance of the print heads. Here a link to a document that turns to explain various ways that ink is used in a printer beyond just printing.

  Yes, this kind of technique can be accomplished with Photoshop Touch, the process may be slightly different than using Photoshop CS5. One of the features of Photoshop Touch is the painting with effects (Saturation, color, temperature, black & white, Dodge Balance / burn, brightness / contrast, Shadows / Highlights, curves, hue, sharpness, comic strip and a pencil). One of the tutorials included with the product market by taking a picture of a horse color, paint the background in black and white and then paint with a saturation increased on the horse itself to bring out.   This printer was designed to function as a system of four cartridges, so you must have all four available ink cartridges in order to be able to print.

  Someone please tell me that the guy I talked to customer service is a fool and there is a way to print black and white, once your color cartridge runs out of ink.

  If this isn't the case, it's the cheapest clamp, all the money that I've ever heard of.  Someone please tell me they did sink that low.

  Printers that have individual ink cartridges (separate magenta, yellow and cyan) must have all the colors, mounted so as to ensure that the printhead to dry out and is not damaged. Some printers who have integrated print heads (that just take the 2 black and tricolor cartridges) have the ability to print in what is known as a reserve mode. That is where we remove the empty cartridge and is able to print a test page to determine if the printer can operate in reserve mode until a replacement can be purchased. The reason for the cartridges to install, is that the printer uses ink for other purposes in addition to printing. It is also used to maintain the printer.   banhien information is very accurate. I would just add a bit of it. Because this printer uses a tricolor cartridge and a black, it should be one of the printers that will print with just the black cartridge installed. It is called print in backup mode. I should happen automatically when you remove the color cartridge and try printing. A message will arrive on the printer or the computer and ask you if you want to print in backup mode. Say yes, and it should let you print. Hope that helps.

  The Deskjet F4288 joined the printheads on the ink supply.  These are replaced at each change of cartrdige so there is no concern about printing empty color or black cartridges.

  You should be able to print in ink entry mode "backup" by removing color (or black, but not both) cartridges.  There will probably be a warning message about ink backup mode but you should be able to print and the printer will work regardless of the cartridge is available.  In handwritten backup with the only color black cartrdige mode areas will print in shades of gray.  If print ink backup mode only the installed color cartridge then black will be printed by mixing colors.

  Use the entry ink-backup mode
  Use ink-backup mode to operate the HP all-in-one with only one cartridge. The
  ink-backup mode begins when an ink cartridge is removed from the print cartridge
  transport. During the ink-backup mode, the product can only printing from the computer.
  You cannot start a print job from the control (such as copying or scanning a Panel
  original).

  NOTE: When the HP all-in-one device works in ink-backup mode, a message is
  displayed on the screen. If the message appears and two print cartridges are installed
  in the product, check that the piece of tape plastic protection has been removed
  each print cartridge. When the plastic strip covering the contacts of the print cartridge, the product
  cannot detect the cartridge is installed.

  I bought a HP Color Laserjet CM1312 and plugged on my 32 bit Windows 7 PC. Of course, I downloaded the newes of HP drivers. Then, I wrote a text in Microsoft Office Word 2010. Parts of the text in red. When I printed this text, all the text was black and white. No color.

  Also, when I print PDF documents with colored text or grafics, it is printed in black and white.

  When I include an image in color in my word document, then the image is printed in color, but not the text.

  How can I solve this problem.

  The problem has been resolved with the HP PS universal print (v5.1) printer driver.

  After several hours of a kind of obstacle course, I come to the conclusion that HP is

  wonderful printers

  but poor software .

  I was able to recreate what you see.   I managed to work around it by installing a different driver that is also supposed to be compatible with the CLJ3600.

  Please consider trying this as a possible solution:

  (1) uninstall the driver CLJ3600 by opening printers and fax machines, driver selection and right-click on it and select Delete.  Once it is removed, right-click on an empty space in the windows printers and faxes and select Server properties.  Click the driver tab, click the CLJ3600 and then click on remove.

  One when you're done, restart, and then install the CLJ3500 driver.  This is a previous version of the driver that has been implemented for the CLJ3600 and is compatible with the CLJ3600.

  After installation, try printing again.

  The output I have indicates it will print is more negative.  Please let me know if you have success.

  One caveat about this solution.  The Color LaserJet 3500 doesn't support duplex.  Of workaround only works for two printing on the package of basic or the Color LaserJet 3600 N.

  What Viewer you use?

  They appear in color on the screen.

  Have you checked the setting according to your image to make sure that it is not set to print grayscale?
