DR VMware - workaround

Guy

I have had a few clients that I need support, they are people in small businesses of 5 to 10, 1 Windows SBS server for sharing and printing/archiving. Simple life

They cannot afford or didn't need hifi VM solutions but I was wondering if I could arrange a quick Dr for them based on VMware and simple solution.

I have to convince as a proof of concept, well, is that it is all free.

Here is the POC for my clients, please approve it if all good or change, would be appreciated.

1. download the new box and install ESXi 3.5, configure and assign an IP address.

2 install the client from Vmware converter standalone on one of the client computer and convert the area physical server in a virtual machine on the ESX host.

3. turn off the physical box at the moment and everyone connect on the new virtual server, test every good and OK

4 turn off the virtual machine and allow users to return to the physical box.

5. use the same converter to export the virtual machine (vmx and vmdk files) of the ESX host on an external drive.

6 remove the virtual machine from the ESX host and back in the importation of the external drive.

7 turn off the physical box and let users connect to the virtual machine again.

Bottom line: in case of crash of the server (physical box), we have an arrangement to import back the files vmx and vmdk USB host ESX in a few minutes drive, we can do every month to keep the most recent data as much possible.

Thanks to the adv.

Well, it would be better solution if you're virtualizing the SMB servers and this keep instead of P2V them and archive as you know the SMB on physical boxes will be out of sync with the backup/archived so where DR Baker, your backup SMB servers are not up to date in any case especially Exchange SQL, DC, etc. unless these pretty well static servers.  However, if you insist on always running in physics, I suggest to have a backup solution for all servers with System State and differential plan you your schedule accordingly.  P2V would be time consuming and does not synchronize.  But you can use P2V to keep one set of servers in VMDK and Archives in the future, simply load ESXi and running at least that you do not have to reconfigure the applications/OS at all.

I would suggest to have servers running on ESX hosts and use local disks or free tools like Openfiler, FreeNAS, Starwind etc. and they works well enough for the small environment. You can use VCB or backup software to schedule backup and restore tasks whenever you want.

If you found this information useful, please consider awarding points to 'Correct' or 'useful '. Thank you!!!

  • Unable to connect to the VMware web service: invalid key file

    Hello

We have a CPO 2.3.1 who refuses to connect to vCenter (see newspaper excerpt at the end of the post).

Recently, we changed our server vCenter (part of a 5.1 update).

    We tried the following workarounds:

    • Remove and add all the elements of the platform from the portal using services SE
    • Re import automation packs (4 of the Starter Edition v2.3.1.38)
    • Re on the keystore password

    No change at all...

Do you have an idea on how to fix this?

    Thank you.

  • Anyone who uses the VMWare adapter? Do you have suggestions for a connection problem?

I have a connection to a vCenter who works for years. (touch wood).  I am trying to add an another vCenter to tide.  I use the exact same username and password, but I get an error on the valid username and password.

I tried on 3 different environments of tide.  I can connect to the application of vSphere with the exact same username and password that I updated the current and he succeeds, but the tide connection still does not work.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thank you!

I suspect that you are facing a known issue in VMware runtime configuration of the user.

CSCuu49010 - user VMware 5.5 must be created as domain\username.

    Symptom:
VMware connection is not getting up when the runtime user has domain association

    Conditions:
    1. Create RTU for VMware
    2. Specify and
    3. Enter the password for VMWare adapater
    4. Now, go ahead and create a new connection for VMware
    5. Connection will not be coming up
    6. Now, remove the domain from RTU and instead specify the username in format
    7. Connection is now up and running

    Workaround:
In the runtime user configuration associated with the VMware adapter, remove domain name from the Domain drop down and instead specify username in format.
You use the areas in your user Runtime used for the new vCenter connection? If so try to remove the domain name from the drop down field and instead specify the user name in format.

I upgraded from VMWare Fusion 7.1.2 to VMWare Fusion 8.1 and also updated my Vagrant VMWare Fusion plugin to the latest version. I can successfully be able to launch my VM CoreOS who runs docker successfully containers, but the network is disconnected whenever I try to navigate to a Web site running in a container of docker. We use a container Nginx as a load balancer, and whenever a local site on the virtual machine is visited from our host, the entire VM falls its network.

I looked in various configurations for our Vagrantfile, but in the end, the issue still persisted. I can't seem to find problems in double of this problem on the forums or google and I ideas on what is the problem. Is there a way someone could help solve the problems with me?

I asked this question in the player forum of work stations, but there doesn't seem to be anyone there know about VMWare-KVM, so I hope for more luck here.

    Hello

    Welcome to community work station!

I'm sorry. I think it's a bug in vmware-kvm on Windows 7. I can reproduce the problem on Windows 7 with 12.1.0 Workstation. But it works well on Windows 8.1.

Temporary workaround configures it in the preferences file you mentioned. Add below line to % APPDATA%\VMware\preferences.ini:

    hint.vmkvm.usageHint = "FALSE"

I'll report a bug of product for it. Thank you for bringing This problem to us!

Kernel memory corruption vulnerability is present in VMware tools

"Shared folders" feature (HGFS) running Microsoft Windows. Successful

exploitation of this issue could lead to an escalation of privilege in

    guest operating system.

VMware would like to thank Dmitry Janushkevich of the Secunia

Research team for reporting this issue to us.

Note: This vulnerability does not allow for elevation of privileges of

the guest to the host operating system. Memory of the host cannot be

    Hello

This seems to be a problem with VMware Tools which contains the driver HGFS. Even if it does not work on ESXi, if the virtual machine is migrated to a non-ESXi system and HGFS is enabled then HGFS would have the problem. ESXi has other controls does not affect the fact that HGFS has a problem. It's one of the reasons that the Hardening Guide said to turn it off in any case.

  • 12 23 (NAT and vmware-netcfg) Fedora workstation

    Hello

I used the library swaps previously mentioned for this race on F23, but there are still a few issues that I have no idea how to solve.

    1 NAT in my guests

5: vmnet8: BROADCAST, MULTICAST, upward, LOWER_UP > mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel State UNKNOWN of group by default qlen 1000

You can see that my OS a 192.168.162.1/24 for the NAT adapter IP address (such as/etc/vmware/networking)

My guests get IP addresses in the range of 192.168.138.0/24 well!  I can ping and reach all through very good IP somehow, even if - DNS does not work - packet capture, see the requests arriving on the interface correct vmnet8, but nowhere to go.  There is a number of perplexity.

    2. I can't start vmware-netcfg

I changed the default theme to work around the error of the gtkrc theme, but it always fails to start (from the GUI or the command line), I can't see if the settings have moved or changed somehow WS11-> WS12

Keep in mind all of it worked as it should with WS12 on F22

    Thank you

    Greg

For vmware-netcfg, you can use the EPS workaround:

    (1) edit/usr/bin/vmware-netcfg

    (2) add the first to the top of the scipt:

(I added this line just below ROOT_REQUIRED = yes)

    Export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_LIBS = force

  • VMware Fusion 7 and VMware Tools - leak memory in Debian comments

At some point during my updates from Mac OS X to Yosemite, VMware Fusion to 7.x and my Debian a guest to 8.0 "Jessie" on my 2012 Mackbook Pro, leaking memory of the Linux kernel is developed.  If I follow these steps, then I'd lose soon about 3 GB memory of the core area.

    1. Install Debian Jessie in a new machine virtual de VMware Fusion
    2. Install open-vm-tools or VMware Tools bundled.
    3. Perform an intensive IO as operation simply cat/dev/zero |-c 1000000000 head >/tmp/test.txt.
    4. Smem - wtk and see ~ 3 GB memory under the dynamics of the kernel memory, benefit.

I opened the 15709682007 assistance request and the representative said that they will fix the problem in a future release. In the meantime, I have what seems to be a workaround for someone else that is affected.  Basically, pulling packages from backports jessie seems to have solved the problem.  This is based on the comments added to open-vm-tools.

    1. Add the Debian repository -backports jessie in /etc/apt/sources.list
    2. sudo apt - get update; sudo apt - get install t Jessie-backports open-vm-tools-dkms open-vm-Tools-Office
    3. sudo apt - get - t jessie-backports dist-upgrade (install kernel 4.1)
    4. Restart comments

    A few quick thoughts:

    1. If you have several virtual machines (or other programs) running on your computer host and VMware Fusion detects that there is memory pressure on your host computer, it uses the "balloon" (vmw_balloon for the latest distributions of Linux) Guest pilot to fly some memory of the guest OS.  This memory "stolen" would appear as memory Dynamics non-cache kernel inside the guest.  Running "sudo rmmod vmw_balloon" should release all memory climbed to the guest OS.  Note that using the balloon driver generally improves the performance of the guest and host, despite the appearance of fear "used memory" inside the guest-"used memory" is just a thing of accounting that we had to use in order to change the priority of the memory between the host and the guest.  It is not "used" in the conventional sense of the term.

    2. I believe that recent versions of virtual hardware non-cache dynamic kernel allocate the necessary memory for SVGA and 3D features (display RAM, texture RAM, etc.).  Disable graphic 3D acceleration or by reducing the amount of graphics shared memory if you are using a new version of virtual hardware (both in the VM > settings... > display) might help.  Decommissioning of a virtual equipment as early (in the VM > settings... > compatibility) can also help.

    See you soon,.

  • How to install vmware tools in a virtual machine running in the drive on an Ubuntu host?

I have a host of Ubuntu (Ubuntu LTS 14.04.2)

I have a virtual of Fedora (4.0.4 - 301.fc22.x86_64) and I would like to install vmware tools in the virtual machine.

When I select the player VirtualMachine-> reinstall VMware Tools...

I get a prompt in a box on the screen.  It is said:

The following software are available for download:

VMware Tools for Linux version 9.9.3

    What do you do?

X Cancel |  Download and install

Of course I choose to download and install (kind of silly question - why I want to cancel?)

So instead of download the tools I want to install, it says:

Your permission is required to install an update to VMware.

Please enter the root password to move forward.

    Password: __________

not serious.  Now, he's looking for what root password?  The virtual machine or the host?

I have try the virtual machine and it works-not "incorrect password... try again."

... well Ubuntu is not a root user.  So, I try the password for the user with root privileges

    "incorrect password... try again."

    Then, he does not.

    Not very satisfying.

The instructions that I found in my research right you will say to take the step to obtain the Tools package then (well, nothing of the rest of it is important if the tools are not available to me).

    Suggestions?  Advice?

The required password is for the host.

A workaround of functions is "sudo su -" of ubuntu host, then start vmplayer from the root prompt.  You must browse the virtual machine since the user doesn't have a history of openness yet... but then there is no prompt asking for a password when you try to download the tools.

  • VMware Workstation 10 - not enough physical memory...

So, I'm aware of the Windows KB2995388 8.1 update that causes this problem:

Not enough physical memory is available to power on this virtual machine with its configured settings. To solve this problem, decrease the size of the memory of this virtual machine at 460 MB, increase the amount of physical memory for all the virtual machines to 3296 MB or adjust the parameters of extra memory to enable more virtual memory machine to swap. It is possible that native and/or services applications have locked memory which could help launch the virtual machine. Close unnecessary applications or services can free up enough memory to start this virtual machine. If you were able to on this Windows virtual machine on that host computer in the past, try restarting the host computer. Reboot may allow you to use a little more memory host to run virtual machines.

but after upgrading my OS today I have the same symptoms and can't find installed KB2995388.

I tried running VMware Workstation as an administrator with no luck either.

Y at - it no alternative workaround, or is there an another Windows update that can cause this problem?

Thanks for any help and advice.

Yes, other updates can cause the same issue, because the change that was made in KB2995388 was incorporated in to many other more recent updates as well.

What version of Workstation do you run?  If you run Workstation 10.0.4 or newer on Windows 8.1, this should no longer be a problem.

  • VMWare Fusion pro 7.1.1 - blocking running yosemite as a guest problem

    Hi all

I have a Yosemite pro running (mid-2014, 16 GB of ram video card w / discrete) MacBook. When I run a guest of yosemite, the video is very lag, and the virtual machine is generally not very handy.

The guest has 4 cores, 4 GB ram, 256 MB of video memory (using the discrete card for 3D applications only) and implements the latest vmware tools 'material' and vmware. I disabled the sound and bluetooth.

Is that what I can do to improve performance?

    Thank you!

Yes.  Please check this blog for the manual workaround and a program called "BeamOff" that will provide relief without manual effort.  https://derflounder.WordPress.com/2014/12/13/improving-Yosemite-VM-performance-in-VMware-Fusion/

I am not the author, and cannot vouch for the port version, however.  I downloaded the source, reviewed and updated on mine, just to be sure.  But it will fix the problem that you are experiencing.  (You need to run the application in the prompt, if it isn't obvious!)

    Hello

Upgrade VMware Tools from 11.0 to 11.1 in Xubuntu 14.04 fails - see the error message below.

    My Xubuntu 14.04 is up-to-date. I've recently performed 'apt - get dist-upgrade'.

I can continue with the installation, but then shared folders does not work.

I don't know what the problem... Everything has worked fine up to 11.0 and I never had problems with VMware Tools upgrade. Help, please.

The filesystem (vmhgfs module) driver is used only for the shared folder

feature. The rest of the software provided by VMware Tools is designed to work

    regardless of this function.

If you want the shared folders feature, you can install the driver of

running vmware-config - tools.pl again after making sure that gcc, binutils, make

and your kernel sources are installed on your computer.

These packages are available on the installation of your distribution CD.

[Press the Enter key to continue]

As Barney42 pointed out, this question comes with the new kernel 3.13.0 - 46. And indeed helped me to find a workaround:

Tools can be patched manually. In vmhgfs.tar, inode.c d_alias should be replaced by d_u.d_alias put it back to the tar and then recompile tools.

Here is a script that does this (tested on ubuntu 32 bit 14.04, vmware workstation on a windows host 11.1):

    #!/bin/sh -x
    cd /usr/lib/vmware-tools/modules/source
    tar xf vmhgfs.tar
    grep -q d_u.d_alias vmhgfs-only/inode.c && echo "already patched" && exit 0
    sed -i -e s/d_alias/d_u.d_alias/ vmhgfs-only/inode.c
    cp -p vmhgfs.tar vmhgfs.tar.orig
    tar cf vmhgfs.tar vmhgfs-only
    vmware-config-tools.pl -d -m

NOTE: This makes incompatible tools with older versions of the kernel, i.e. 3.13.0 - 45.

However, @VMware-team, please do run again out of the box, or submit a patch for the Linux kernel. You are a large business, should be no problem.

  • Installation of VMware in VMware Player tools

    Hello

I installed VMware Player v7, created a virtual machine (Windows) and wanted to install the VMware Tools via Player > manage > install VMware Tools... but nothing happens when I click on this option. The following 2 other methods I found in a Ko do not work either:

    • Enter D:\setup.exe where D: is the first CD-ROM drive configured for your virtual computer = > NOK as the virtual drive does not show the VMware tools.
    • Looking for the ISO file in the installation folder = > NOK: there is no ISO file.

After searching on the forum, I realized that VMware Player doesn't come with VMware tools and workaround I used was to install VMware Workstation without a license on another computer, find the file "windows.iso", copy it to the computer, mount it as a virtual drive and start the client installation.

The thing I don't understand is the reason for which the option is available in the VMware Player menu if the VMware tools are not? It's very confusing for people new to VMware and only install VMware Player...

You need not download VMware workstation to get VMware Tools in VMware Player!  VMware Player 7 is working fine on my system and had no problem downloading VMware tools, so maybe it's a problem specific to your environment/system that may block recovery.

Take a look at my answer: Re: VMware Tools missing in the Installation of VMware Player 7
