DVD drive reading blank DVDs as 0 bytes

I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 1501 with a TSST Corp +/-RW Drive. My Dell warranty is expired, so I installed Windows XP (it came with Vista - I liked but it was just a resource hog). I have crossed and burned nearly 100 gigs of information on dvd to use after the "downgrade". And everything worked fine. I copied a few movies that I and the music, everything worked very well. But this morning I put a blank dvd in the drive of the pop-up window (which request that you want to do) it's called a white cd. I was confused, so I open 'my computer' and seen my disc D was labled CD instead of DVD player, but he has shown a drive and had the small logo dvd next to her. I held my mouse over it and the small window pop up says 0 bytes available, total 0 bytes. So, I tried another disc, then another and another. All the same result. I tried to burn something just to see if it would work, and it says "Windows has encountered a problem, try to copy this file, what do you do? It has 3 options: retry, go, cancel, I said to try again, the message is returned to the top, I said to jump and a pop up says cannot copy the file. and had an OK button. I restarted, the drivers updated, used dell update thing, looked online, read about 20 other people having this problem on this forum - but could not be effectively resolved. My warranty is up (last month - go figure) and even if it wasn't I installed XP so my warranty would be voided anyway. No one knows what to do to fix this? Is it possible that I have it consumed to copy my entire computer on DVD in one day? Also, device manager says it's working properly, but the location said 0 (0). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I agree with master... I don't know what kind of problems you have, but if the player doesn't work properly, it must be replaced. The warranty is certainly valid and the nearest authorized can help you with it.

Maybe you made a mistake. Take your laptop to the nearest service and show them what you mean exactly. Here, we can only speculate what may be your problem.

  • How to make Toshiba USB 250 GB HARD drive read-only?

    Hello

I just plug a Toshiba USB 250g external hard drive to replace all the sticks of memory, I've been using.

I'll use this external hard drive to copy files to other computers and I would like to know how to make the drive read-only.

Moreover, all the other tips to protect the disc would be extremely welcome.

I use a Dell with Windows 7 laptop.

    Thank you very much

    Dougal

I don't know what HARD drive you have exactly, but I know that Toshiba offers a software protection with external hard drives.
Did you check manuals? Is something like that provided with your HARD drive?

Maybe you need to use some third party software part for the protection of files on the HARD drive. Google all over the place.

  • CD/DVD Rom drive reads the DVD as blank disc?

Looked for information on the subject the whole place and it feels like I'm the only one who has this problem.

The CD/DVD-Rom drive in my HP laptop is not reading the data on my DVD or CD I DVD that have been burned on a computer and some other that I burned on this drive. Data on them that I've used them in the past and without any problem. I changed nothing on my computer since the last time I used them I can think of and I have all the latest software updates for Vista and HP.

Now when I put in drive it takes about a minute and then gets up and tells me that the disc is empty, but I know it's NOT like I've used it before and I see on the underside of the drive it was burned.

Is this a problem of software or a hardware problem or disk I have not tried a lot of things that just the standard checks to try to get the drive to run but without success. For any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Phil.

    Hello PhilStokes,

Thank you for using the Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.

Sorry, you have a problem with this issue.  I would first go to Device Manager to verify that all drivers are up-to-date.

Go to start-> Type ' Device Manager "" in the search field-> select Device Manager '->, select here (+) for the CD/DVD - rom-> This will fall to the bottom of your device-> next right-click on the device and select update. "

If not chance or driver is already updated, return to Device Manager and right click on your device and select uninstall.  You may be prompted to restart, anyway go back to Device Manager and right click again and select install or update.

Please let us know status.  Thank you! Engineer James Microsoft Support answers visit our Microsoft answers feedback Forum and let us know what you think.

  • Problem with my Thinkpad SL500 reading blank DVDs

My SL500 will not read the sony blank DVD brand I. I know that my hard drive is functional. My drive plays DVD fine, he reads the Virgin and regular music CD. Nevermind, just found that this model can not record DVDs, CD only. It's pretty sad given that I bought in 2009... Guess I'll have to look into updating my disk.

  • Satellite M35x-s349 - DVD-ROM drive read not

    I have a Satellite M35x-s349. I got it around late 2004.

He has had this problem for a few months and I had submitted to not being able to read or write cd / dvd because I couldn't find my recovery disks. When the computer was planted I renewed my efforts, found, restored with the help of an external HD enclosure, backed up and restored my computer. It was working fine. I burned the CD and watched movies without problems for a few months.

He has now stopped read any kind of cd yet. I put the small drive flashes next to my cursor. I hear movement inside (ROAR and the eye moving) but after about 20 seconds, he gave up and claims that there is no disc in the drive. I don't want to have to do a system restore, but I can't even read the restore disk to reinstall the driver. Are there any ideas on why this happens if not all the solutions? Any way to reinstall the driver online? I am a user of level intermediary model so I can understand most tech jargon you throw my way. I can usually solve my own problems, but this one seems hopeless.

    Any help is very appreciated.

    -Tom

I agree with Akuma. If the bootable CD/DVD cannot be read by the player are probably defective.

It's old notebook and you can find replacement on eBay.
Change the record is not complicated and if you need help let us know.

  • Satelitte P850-132: optical drive read DVD but not CD

    Hello

I have a P850-132 of Satellite of Toshiba (PSPKAE) with a Mat * one optical drive DVD-RAM UJ8B0.

I have the latest drivers for the optical drive installed (6.1.7601.17514).

Problem: Reads DVD very well, but cannot read the CD.

When you try to play a CD, the player makes a low clicking noise: ~ 4 quick clicks, then a second of silence, ~ 4 quick clicks... The player repeats this model by clicking silence/4 times, then goes silent. Nothing else happens.

The drive is defective? Is there an easy way to check if it is?

The pointers will be deeply appreciated :)

    Hi all!

Yesterday, I bought a brand new Satellite L755-1N6 and I must say that I am very satisfied with this product.
    Of course, except one thing...

For some reason any my Player CD OFTEN reads/scans / searches (?) for CD/DVD even if no disc is inside! It's large notebook, but frequent ringing of CD drive is very very annoying and it is not normal.

He's trying to 'read cd' for approximately every 5 minutes (give or take a few minutes). I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. If please, if anyone has experienced this problem and do you know what this is all about?

BTW I have disabled Autoplay setting, although I think that it doesn't matter anyway.
It happened at least twice while I was writing this post...
