  I'm having some problems with my Toshiba Satellite M40, and I decided to reinstall the OS with the recovery of the dvd disk, but the disk does not start.

  Can you please test it with some other bootable CD or DVD? It will be interesting to know if this happens with the recovery media only or even with other bootable media.

Try to start with a bootable CD/DVD, your installation of Vista/recovery DVD for example (do not run recovery!) or a Linux Live CD. If the reader does not recognize the drive outside of Windows you will know for sure that the material is bad. Contact Toshiba technical support for replacement in this case. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

  As far as I know, there is no special driver for any player and it will be used standard Microsoft driver. Player must be installed only for DVD-RAM DVD tool. Understand your problem a bit better it will be useful to know what model of laptop you have.
