EFI problem

I z510 when I did the last windows update I restarted my laptop to install updates and when I started, I saw these two messages

I found the problem and resolved I've updated the bios for the parameter had been back to default and I haven't the bios boot settings in the legacy support so that this did not work well
So, I converted my hard from MBR to GPT to avoid this problem

    Hello

I am considering the purchase of a new laptop (Toshiba Satellite U920t). Does anyone know, if it is consistent with recent distributions of linux (Ubuntu-based)? Is it possible to find the detailed material (model wifi, BT model,...), which can help to decide?

    Thanks for all info

    Hello

I am writing this reply on a U920T-109 under Ubuntu 64 bit 14.04.
I had an EFI problem that looks like other models - Ubuntu bootable EFI-binary do not find after successful installation.
It's all in fact easily solved by copying the native binary file & folder more generically called those.
Question is can be avoided by setting the boot to the CSM mode if you want to stay on the easy way :) But do it BEFORE installation to avoid confusion between the error message during startup.

One of the above is complete, the device starts and works fine in Ubuntu 14.04.

Webcam WLAN, Bluetooth, touch screen, mouse works fine.
    Keyboard shortcuts work in part.
Brightness not possible to order in a standard installation, but should be possible to operate by use of a boot argument (acpi_backlight = vendor).

Overall, I see no reason why you make a U920T a great Linux-PC.

See the output of lsusb and lspci below. Please keep in mind that no matter what U920T you watch may slightly differ in specifications and features!

  • Slow pre-launch sequence on end of 2013 rMBP13

Hi guys, I tried to understand this problem of slow boot for about a year and a half now, and I can not pin down what is the problem or how to fix this reliably.

I have an end of 2013 rMBP 13 running El Capitan (although the problem existed in Yosemite as well, but I don't remember what happens in the Mavericks) and 10 Windows in bootcamp (it used to run windows 8, but then the slow start came with it as well). I don't remember exactly when this happened first, but it was about half a year or so after Yosemite was released. I was running Yosemite and windows 8 in bootcamp without problem before and Maverick and the same installation of windows 8 before a year very well.

    The problem:

The laptop appear to have a slow sequence of pre-launch. I press the power button, hear the Apple chime, then wait about 20 to 25 seconds until the apple logo on the white black screen or selection of start up, screen am I holder of options. After the apple logo or the boot selection screen, it starts normally in less than 5 seconds on the desktop. All the following which works perfectly well without notable accidents and slowdowns during normal use. Also never actually, it fails to start or give any error message.

The delay seems to also occur before the computer records the NVRAM reset - I must press Cmd/Opt/P/R for about 20 seconds before the screen backlight turns off, the computer restarts with a second chime.

The biggest problem is I switch between OSX and Bootcamp quite often, and I need to sit near the computer and hold the option key for nearly half a minute each time when I do that... Otherwise everything else works as expected.

    Things I've tried:

Reset NVRAM - I think it would work once a large earlier. Right now reset which does nothing for the boot time.

Select volume OSX in the startup disk - I tried this time OSX recovery and even in the recovery of the internet. This used to work once or twice sporatically, but no longer works. I also tried setting Bootcamp partition as the starting volume, and it still does not work.

Reset SMC - never done any good.

Wipe the disk and reinstall - it's been a while since I've done it, but I remember that it worked fine when OSX is the only volume, but when I install bootcamp and then try to select OS x as the default volume, he is still confused and slow down during pre-launch.

Repair of permissions of the drive and stuff - has never done any good.

Wiping Bootcamp - worked at least once, but as soon as I reinstall it and boot in there and back, the same problem occurs.

The changing property and rebuild kextcache-

    sudo chown root: admin /.

    sudo kextcache-system-pre-bound-kernel

    sudo kextcache-system-caches

It was the last thing I tried with success. I have done this in the terminal about 3 months ago and restarted. Apple logo appeared in the 5 seconds of power and I was super excited. But then I started in bootcamp and returned and the pre-launch was always again. Now it is once again not even speed up the first reboot.

Any idea guys? I feel as if it were an EFI problem where laptop computer confused at where to start from and he concludes then somehow in 20 seconds. But if that were the case why not selecting disk start not fix it? Also why it not immediately save the NVRAM reset?

I don't know if you still have this issue, but I think I could have solved on my rMBP after finding http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/209-69-windows-bootcamp-black-screen-blinking-curseur-Age-boot(not without first OS X repartitioning and by performing a clean installation, which now seems as if was not necessary).

I had to get Windows Recovery mode.  F8 does not seem to work with boot camp to the to do, I started Windows and held down the power button to interrupt the boot sequence, after that 2 - 3 times it would show "Please Wait" instead of the usual circle of points (10 Windows).  Otherwise you can use the Windows installation media, but I had only one practice ISO file I installed via boot camp assistant.

Open the command (under Advanced Recovery).  Enter the following command:

    Bootrec.exe /FixMbr

    Bootrec.exe /FixBoot

    Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd

From there I could reboot and there was no delay start in Windows.  In now option button to select the startup disk also didn't cause any delay and was admissible.  I started to OS X and selected my OS X disk as the startup disk, restarted several times and did not have questions that I would have usually experienced.

My guess is that it may have been caused by a recent update of Windows 10.

He said I would need to have access to the USB or disc, but I have no then recommends talking manufacturer. However, are there any other ideas to rectify this.

    Hello

We need more information to help you, please answer the following question.

What is the brand and model of the computer?

Error code: 0 xC0000001 indicates that there could be some problems with the boot device or startup files are corrupt. Most of the new machines come with a recovery partition, allowing you to return your purchase, you will need to check your user guides (or the manufacturer's Web Site) for instructions. Choose this path requires you to save all the data first. The OEM must be able to provide a recovery CD to you at time of purchase.

If you do not have a disk to install/repair of Windows 8/8.1, then I suggest you first create a Windows 8/8.1 installation media. Check out these links:

  • Problem starting EFI on ESXi 5.5.0 - 1331820-standard

    Hello.

Hoping someone can confirm or deny a problem starting EFI on ESXi 5.5.0 - 1331820-standard when you use the start-the name of the DHCP option file (and not the field in BOOTP file).

What I see is that the DHCP boot file name option is not properly interpreted by the EFI ROM: the TFTP request comes back with a broken file name that actually contains not only the file name, but the binary content of the rest of the DHCP packet (or at least the DHCP options area).

Example - if the last two options in the DHCP on the network offer are...

    boot file name 'syslinux.efi' # < code: 67 > < length: 12 > syslinux.efi

    end # < code: 255 >

.. .the TFTP request comes back with the file name "syslinux.efi\377" (with code 255 end DHCP [= octal 377, here] annexed) instead of "syslinux.efi".

It seems that this can be worked around by (1) using BOOTP instead of DHCP option file field, or (2) by adding an ASCII NUL to the option of starting in the dhcpd configuration file name (i.e. bootfile-name "syslinux.efi\000").

If it is a known problem, has been resolved in a later update of ESXi 5.5 or 6.0 ESXi?

    Thank you!

Hi Robert and welcome on VMware communities!

We use the open-source EDK2 as a base project for our implementation of the EFI.  It seems that we will need to enter the following of EDK2 correction so that the name of boot file work properly: EDK II / Code / Commit [r15099]

I doubt that we will have this fixed in ESXi 6.0, so I at this stage I don't think that update will fix it, unfortunately.  I'll report if investigation proves otherwise.

I'll file a bug report to see all have it fixed.  Thanks for the report and troubleshooting comprehensive, you did great problem!

    See you soon,.

  • VMWare EFI Netboot problem

I tried for awhile now for netboot in a guest OS 10.8 and aired on a compatibility issue between my netboot (a Dell KACE K2000) server and VMWare Fusion Pro (this applies also to ESXi 5.5). For some reason, I jsutcan not get VM to netboot at all. There seems to be something to do with the VMWare EFI not broadcasting not quite the right information when it travels to netboot. Physical Macines will very well be netboot. In my efforts to solve the problem, I finally configure the virtual machine to make sure that the DHCP packet it sends are as close as possible to what sends a physical machine. Here are my results so far:

This first package comes from a WORKING PHYSICAL machine. This is the last packet sent before it receives an adequate response of the K2000 containing the name of boot file, the path root etc...

    2. the physical machine Specifies the maximum size of 57 DHCP. I do not think that this issues as well, it is 1500 which corresponds to the MTU of the network.

He responds in the same way as for all DHCP, just because the last packet sends the VM before exhaling is identical to the previous. For some reason, he does not get past the stage of the netboot process LIST. I'm not 100% sure if the bug is really on the side of VMWare or the side of the K2000. Probably both honestly. Everything I have out the newspaper on the k2000 is "BSDP LIST 10.4.40.180:68 (MacBookPro8, 1/i386). The strange thing is, looking back in the newspapers I see the OCCASIONAL entry in the log indicating that virtual machine actually there for the SELECTION phase (BSDP SELECT in 10.4.40.196:622 (VMware7, 1/i386)). It's from before I changed the hardware ID to match a known correct machine. But it's random, few and far between. No real change in the virtual machine in these cases.

Some other relevant info on the environment: the k2000 once PXE and Netboot. We need to have both available on the same network, if DHCP options are implemented for PXE. I also confirmed that windows VM will be netboot very well. Maybe the EFI VMWare doesn't like the presence of both on the same network?

Ah, found the problem.  At least, I think that I have.  I would say that your NetBoot server behaves in a divergent way of Apple's NetBoot server, but we could also make our firmware a little more tolerant of the situation.

During (BSDP) NetBoot server discovery, BSDP protocol messages are packed in the field 'Vendor-Specific Option' in the format described in RFC 2132 (the same format DHCP options themselves are stored in the package).  RFC 2132 sets a terminator from the list of DHCP options (in section 3.2), but BSDP itself define nor stipulate a list for options BSDP NetBoot Apple Server terminator does not issue a list terminator - expects customers use the length the DHCP field the length of the list of options of BSDP "Vendor-Specific Option", which makes sense.  Your NetBoot server is such a terminator (0xff), which is sort of implicitly authorized (as it is in the RFC 2132) but Apple server is not and we do not expect.

Here is the offending BSDP ACK [LIST], with the dissected option DHCP data (I hope that the formatting out):

This byte unique ff causes our BSDP analysis to cancel the package [LIST] ACK as invalid.

If the implementation of NetBoot Apple works on the same server, it must be tolerant to a terminator explicit here.  I'll change our implementation to do the same.  It may be useful to remind your NetBoot server provider as well, in case they wish to change their server to behave more like Apple.

    Thanks for the report!

  • EFI boot ROM update problem

I have a MacBook Pro 8.1 end of 2011. I'm updating the EFI boot ROM. There are currently on an old version, MBP81.0047.B2C. Later I can find is MBP81.0047.2AB since the Mac EFI security update 2015-001. I tried to install this rom to boot, but it will not be installed. The update requires 10.8.5 to 10.9.5 but I'm on El Capitan now. I have to go all downgrade procedure first to be able to update the EFI boot ROM and then move on to El Cap again?

You could create a small partition of 20 GB on your HARD drive, get a copy of the full install on a small partition Mavericks Installer. You should be able to re - download the Mavericks since the purchase of your App Store page assuming you got it from the App Store in the past. If this isn't the case, then you are out of luck, unless you can find help at your local Apple store.

  • Problems with ESXi 5.1 and 5.0 in a WS9 EFI - VM

    Hello Jim

I'm testing ESXi LiveCDs to version 5.0 and 5.1.
In the LiveCD, I use a state.tgz to enable SSH and ESXi-shell and set a password.
The LiveCD works fine if I use them on WS 9 virtual machines with firmware = "bios".

If I try the same CD in a virtual machine with the firmware = "efi" I am not able to get the network began.
If I built a CD that does not use the state.tgz the network is fine.

For now, I'm building the CD with different boot.cfgs for MBR and boot EFI.
But I prefer to use the boot.cfg even with a state.tgz that works for both scenarios.

I enclose the EFI - VM's vmx file and the state.tgz file.

    Great!

  • InDesign problems when printing to Xerox 700i Digital Color Press running EFI Fiery

Mac OS 10.9.3, up to date CC Adobe InDesign.

Whenever I print to the Xerox by using Fiery features, then I can't save.  If I close the file and try to re - open, I said that another user changes the document.  If I reboot, then go in my folder and throw the idlk file which was not deleted when I closed, I can once again save changes etc, until I have print again.  So not agree...

Today, I installed Indesign CC (2014).  Whenever I print an Indesign file using the Xerox with the Fiery features, the application prints and then crashes.  I was hoping that the new version would be better.  For me, it's WORSE!

I've written nine books with InDesign.  They are each manual page of 500 +.  I tried to find help for a year and can't seem to find it.  I am close to tell my partners that we have to find a new solution.  I can't take the extreme to my productivity I took trying to work with this software.  Seems a shame, because I've lived several InDesign versions over the past 12 years.  Changes will be extremely painful, but I may just need to bite the bullet.

It is not a solution, but the export in pdf and printing from Acrobat would be the alternative.

I just tested an alternative solution. If you have Fiery productivity tools or the possibility of creating hot folders.

Create a hot folder, set work and action properties of requirements - n - up, Simplex/Duplex, color/grey etc.

Export ID directly in the folder.

  • Need instructions/tips for no Win8.1 on mid 2012 MBP pro audio problem

Thank you for taking your time looking in my question.

My Machine: Macbook Pro retina no Mid 2012

What I wanted: install win 8.1 pro 64 bit on a second SSD completely (without Partition) / replace the optical drive

My problem: everything works fine, but no sound. Drivers seem to be the cause:

    How I installed windows:

    1. I put the own ssd in the main Bay + optical drive with disk 8.1 win

    2. Windows disk initialized and installed windows 8.1 64-bit without errors

3 install the drivers for bootcamp support

4 returned the Mac ssd go back to the main Bay and put the ssd of windows in the caddy and then in the optical Bay

    5. starting is by holding alt and choosing between mac os, recovery and boot efi (which contains windows)

What I tried (all of the following are ineffective):

1 reinstall/repair drivers bootcamp support from different sources (of the download on the website of apple and the bootcamp assistant application)

    2 reinstall the realtek drivers

    3. how to install intel drivers graphics hd 4000 (found a source who said it would do the trick, there is no)

4 uninstallation of controller high definition Audio (it always seems to come back)

    5. manually download and install the drivers http://www.stuffedcow.net/files/CS4207_WinVista_Win7_32-64-bit_6-6001-1-30.zip cirrus

    I get the following error:

    6. place the ssd of windows in the main Bay

7 troubleshooting sound (a 99% sure that this would not work)

8 throw up my hands in despair and uncontrollable crying afterwards (was probably the most effective on 8)

    That I need clarification on:

I found found some sources say that installing windows via EFI mode causes no sound, but I'm not sure if the way I installed it is considered to be the efi mode as I have never had an option for efi mode. However when I start upward and hold option the name of the windows disk named ' BOOT EFI. Efi mode is how I installed windows?

    What I need instructions on:

Some sources claim that I need to install windows in hybrid MBR mode however I do not know how I would install windows any differently than the way I did above. How can I go about installing, not in start efi mode, if I want to spend the whole ssd for windows / that I would do anything differently than the steps I listed up there?

Thanks a lot again for your time and help!

Windows must be in the main Bay and must stay in the main Bay after installation. You can either use the wizard of BC and create a USB installer which will also create a legacy BIOS/MBR W8.1 (default value for your specific model) or if you choose to do it manually, make sure that the icon of Windows from the installation media, not EFI Boot.

If you start from the DVD W8.1, the default value is Boot EFI. BC Assistant did a bit of work for you, in order to avoid the is not a good idea.

  • EFI disk0s1 not mounted. screen shows gray with help file when I restart

I had these problems with my recent Mac.

    1. it freezes for a few seconds. Then begins to work properly. And then freezes. The beachball keeps spinning and I can't access any of the applications.

I tried restarting. But came up with another question. The gray screen of the charges and file aid continues to Flash.

I tried from the recovery mode, but I get the Internet (OS X Lion). I'm under El Capitan. In disk utility, I check and repair the drive. Stop and try again. Now, there are two current icons and off - no logo entry sign and apple. If I'm lucky then after 40-50 seconds, Mac starts up.

Now, I tried to make the EtreCheck, and he gave me more results for disc

    Disk information: ⓘ

Recovery HD (disk0s3) < not mounted > [recovery]: 650 MB

    HL-DT-ST DVD - RW GS41N)

    That's what worry?

What can I do to fix these problems?

Disk0 unit 1 is not the problem. This is the EFI partition, which is never mounted, because it is used only by the bootstrapper, long before that the file system is initialized.

Your problem is 70 errors in disk0 tranche 2, the volume Macintosh HD. This hard drive (the entire disc) was his. Dead. in ruins. You need a new drive.

  • Tons of problems on my MacBookAir

Well, I had a first generation MacBookAir (1,1) used for a price really low. The person who already possessed it says that the screen has been replaced, it's what he told me. Later, I realized that I can't adjust the brightness to 100% or I'll get a kernel panic. Also, I can't pass over mac os x 10.7.3 or I'll take a gray death screen before I have the chance to open a session. At the same time, the computer becomes very slow, due Kernel_Task who was devouring my cpu and what makes my mac unusable.  I have 'fixed' the task of kernel on Lion by going to system/library/extensions/ioplatformfamilyplugin...blahblahblah...and MacBookAir1_1 the deletion. But the problems mentioned previously are still present. Also, a few more problems are recently appeared... twice these past months I received a notification telling me to replace my battery soon, and, for some reason any, whenever I create a new partition on my hard drive, SSD, it seems to be corrupted. He was named "disk0s3 or 4" instead of the name, I gave him and it will not mount. I have fix it. in single user mode, but.. which seems to be a hardware problem on my SSD. What is software?

    (Not OS X related)

I tried to install Windows 7/8/8.1/10 in EFI mode. I tried with 7 isos different (good isos) copy on a usb GPT partitioned and tried with 3 different usbs. Well, I have never spent a screen saying black something like "a recent hardware or software change will not let you boot...". Cause: An unexpected error has occurred... error 0xc00000... do not know how many zeros... 0000e ". Because they say, it's maybe a hardware problem... This is the screen that was replaced? I was able to successfully it boot in the BIOS with the MBR, but who live!

    Conclusion

    (1) I'm never buy anything it is used again.

    (2) is the problem of the screen? Or is my messed up EFI? Well... I DON'T LIKE. If you have a solution to all my problems (apart from buying a new computer, lol) then post them here on this thread (no, duh, where else...)

    (3) and if you can't help me... at least show me how to solve the problem of cpu of 150% kernel_task, which seems to be bothering me again in Snow Leopard!

Yes. 150% Kernel_task in snow leopard. The method that I've applied to correct it on Lion does not work on SL, and I can't find anything on the internet.

Let's focus on fixing kernel_task on snow leopard. Ignore everything else. Sorry for the mess.

Reset the SMC can solve a problem.

    And good luck!

  • Disappeared from the EFI partition

    Hello

I have a macmini end of 2012. I have the dual boot with Windows 8.1 and Yosemite. I also have a third FAT partition for data sharing.

So, my setup looks like this, in Windows:

The problem is that the EFI partition is gone, so I could do reach log Windows using an external backup drive, which also had a copy backup of the EFI partition. Yes, I basically cloned this drive for a long time and I've tested all the BONES on the external hard drive, and they were all bootable. Thus, using this trick, I managed to get into Windows.

But now that I got under Windows I see as the missing EFI partition. I recently installed a customized for Win8.1 shell that makes it look like Win10. This software must have messed with the EFI partition, I don't see anything else that might have caused this.

Just before the disc became starts plu I tried a few bar custom this custom, shell that uses the app mode of Win8.1 full screen, and when I tried to quit it by closing it, he suddenly threw an error message, I clicked on cancel, then the system froze.

I pressed the power button to restart, then it's just stuck in a gray screen for minutes. Pressing ALT does not display the start menu. So, I concluded that the EFI must be wasted, so after the POWER test the computer does not find a bootable floppy. But I get no message, like the missing disk or stuff like that.

I know that there are some tools that you can use to fix your EFI partition. It runs on Windows, because I'm not sure that I can boot into OS X Yosemite. In addition, as you can see the free space on drive D, where I installed Yosemite is not reported correctly. Which clearly indicates that there must be some data from corrupt volume information.

Please install GPT Fdisk on the side Windows of https://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ and your drive can be inspected.

In most cases, EFI is usually invisible. The 200 MB in the first instalment on disk0 seems to be your EFI. It may be a problem with the MBR is structured.
