Error 1500. Another installation is already in progress

I had to install a plugin for our payroll service.  When I tried to intall the plugin (msi), I get the error message "error 1500.  Installatation another is underway.  You must complete that installation before continuing this one. »

After troubleshooting, we found the following in Windows Task Manager - processes tab.

2 instances of msiexec.exe (user name: SYSTEM)

1 instance of msiexec.exe * 32 (user name: SYSTEM)

1 instance of msiexec.exe * 322 (username: me)

Because I'm not running an installation or uninstallation - I used the 'End process' button, but the same names four Windows Installer Image returned (same Image name and same username as above).

I did some research and ended up using it (msconfig) Configuration system, selective startup (tab Services), hide all Microsoft services, people with disabilities, then restarted the computer and managed to do the installation.  After installation, I've restored the start-up services as they were before.

I then had an update of Java who came today, and which resulted in the error 1500 again.  I did the search again to find other things I could do.

I tried the following:

Solution 1: Change (remove) the Inprogress key as follows:

1. choose Start > run, and type regedit in the text box to open; Click OK.
2. open the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Inprogress.
3 If the Inprogress key exists, delete it and then restart the installation.

Solution 2: Unregister and then reregister the Windows Installer Service.

1. choose Start > run, and then type msiexec /unreg in the text box open. Click OK.
2. click on start > run and then type msiexec/regserver in the text box to open; Click OK

The following changes have been made in the last two weeks:

December 29, Windows Update [Update critical]

Dec 21, windows Update [critical update]

18 Dec installed O2Micro Flash Memory Card Driver Windows

18 Dec, Intel Network Connections

18 dec, Dell updates

First Question:

Is it possible to know what is trying to install or uninstall Windows Installer?

Restore points - have not tried, but will be done as the next.

Update on system restore

Tried to restore to 29 Dec and get following error message:

"System restore was not entirely successful.  The system files and settings on your computer did not change.

Details:

System Restore could not access a file.  This is probably because an antivirus program is running on the computer.  Temporarily disable your antivirus and restart System Restore.

An unspecified error occurred during system restore.  (0x80070005)

... Try again, etc"

I've completely disabled the Malwarebytes and tried a second time and the same problem.

Other options if the Restore Points does not work?

  • Always says that another installation is already in progress

    Hello

I have a desktop computer with Windows 7 installed.  It seems to be hung on a facility that I can't finish.  This prevents me from doing other installs without going through a routine of Rube Goldberg.

When I try to install a program, it stops and I get an error that says: "another installation is already in progress.  Complete it before you proceed with this installation. »

If I go to the Windows Task Manager process.  There are always 2 copies of msiexec.exe running.  One has my username next to him.  The other has nothing beside him.  I can "Complete the process" on the version with my name next to him, but not others.

Now, if I want to reach intall a program.  I close version of msiexec.exe with my username next to him.  Then I go into Services and disable Windows Installer.  Then I reboot.  Then I go into Services and back Windows Auto Installer.  Then I can install a program.  If I want to install another one, I have to go through the same routine of Rube Goldberg.

Is it possible to get rid of this problem?

    Thank you

  • Another installer already running

When I originally downloaded PS 13 elements and tried to run the installation program, it would always crash - saying me that another installer was already running.  I had to download the files manually.  Now the software attempts to apply an update to the version 13.1 and I'm having the same problem - the installer tells me that another installer is already running.

I rebooted my machine (under Windows 7 Enterprise x 64 SP1) where another process was hanged in a previous software update, but it makes no difference.  Anyone got any suggestions?

    Thank you!

    • You have problems with programs
    • Error messages
    • Recent changes to your computer
    • What you have already tried to solve the problem

    Hello dutchb,

The error, "another installation is in progress and must be completed first" can be attributed to the InProgress key found in the registry at:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress

Change the settings of the REGISTRY can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the REGISTRY settings configuration can be solved. Changes to these settings are at your own risk.

I suggest that first make a backup of the registry or a system restore point. Then go to control panel, administrative tools, Services. Do scroll down and find the Windows Installer service, and set the start at the stop State. Delete the registry key to the location above.

Now, you shouldn't get the installation in the progress message when you try to uninstall programs.

    I hope this helps.

    Sincerely,
