Hello- Who is the update that you are trying to install?
You can use the following methods that can help you solve your problem:
Method 1:
I suggest to fix the .net framework functionality in Windows and then try to install the update.
Steps to repair Microsoft .net Framework
a. Click Start, and click Control Panel.
b. navigate to the program and features.
c. scroll down for Microsoft.Net Framework 4 Client Profile, do a right click.
d. it will give you a choice of uninstall/change, click it.
e. then it will give a choice to repair it, choose repair. It will take about 4 to 10 minutes to repair (with my PC), your experience may vary.
f. When finished, open Windows update and update again.
Method 2:
a. Click Start and type Services in the search bar and click on enter.
b. go to the following Service and make sure the following boot parameters are enabled:- Remote procedure call (RPC) - automatic
- Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator - Manual
c. If you need to change one or two parameters, restart and check again to make sure that the two settings are still in effect.
Method 3:
If this isn't the case, perform the methods listed in the section below and check if that helps to install the updates successfully. http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/940520

I have to reinstall all my applications and drivers when I update to Windows XP to Windows 7?
When you upgrade Windows XP to Windows 7, a lot of drivers is upgraded as part of the process and your applications and settings must be migrated automatically. If you perform a new installation, you may need to find the drivers for your PC that are compatible with Windows 7 (or, if no driver is specifically available for Windows 7, use Windows Vista counterparts).
You can also use Windows Easy Transfer to move your documents, photos, music and other files if you decide to perform a new installation. For more information about Windows Easy Transfer, please visit http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/windows-easy-transfer.
