ESXi 5.5 CPU allocation issues

I did a lot of reading about how Esxi manages operating system reviews all hearts. It seems that everywhere wherever I look the common practice is to give 1 core on the guest operating system (or 2 if demand can take advantage or a program tops out at a kernel, the system can still be responsive)

But realworld I see something completely different. I have a 6172 Opteron that is 24 hearts. 2.10 ghz. I have a generic windows installation 2012 and when I give it 2 hearts and say that it runs of prime95, it uses only about 4 ghz esxi, but when I turn and give it 8 cores it uses 16 ghz. Which is the opposite of what I read everywhere, where subscribe too many carrots will cause a delay and reduce performance. I have not messed with the CPU reservations or limitations. If something is wrong with my settings of the bios for the CPU? or not this CPU virtualizes not correctly? In any case, my request is really for 1 OS to do all the heavy loads of the CPU and the other just operating systems support it, but with my current license, I can only give 8 cores per host. Makes me feel like, I won't be able to get full implementation of my material.

Thanks for any insight of this.

I don't know what your expecting to see, it does not work as expected.  Your getting the performance that you should rely on the number of cores allocated to the VM * the base clock speed.  CPU scheduling can result in poor performance that is often created by too many vms that were too many vcpus assigned that they actually need to run the workload.    If only you have access to 8 cores and plan to run only 2 vm - 1 heavy, 1 light with respect to the use of the CPU, you can always set a have 6 hearts and the other a 2.  Depends on the cpu of your app usage profile, you can even get away with 2 and 1. It is advisable to start with hearts as little as possible.

If you currently have the application physical Kit, you should really graphic it or use something like capacity planner.  If you can afford it, I would swap your out CPU for a 3 + Ghz 8core or you loose carrots.

  • ESXi 5.1 - Exchange 2007 - file Page memory and CPU allocation

I'm currently migrating a class Cluster CSC Exchange 2007 running on vmware on windows 2008, 2003.  It is also a SCC Cluster.  I followed all of the vmware and MS best practices, but not sure of one thing IM is the size of memory and CPU allocation page/swap file.  I have 5 Esxi hosts and each is running only Exchange 2007 comments according to vmware and MS recommendations when you use the Clustering of CSC.

Each host has 2 CPUs to 6 cores per processor and 48 gb of Ram and that each host will have only a guest, would like to send it to the guest.  I read somewhere that it is recommended this page exchange 2007 memory size + 10 mb file.  Do I really need to get the page to the size of the file?  250 GB of disk space is a lot for swap files! IM also not sure what to set the allocation processor too.  If someone can point me in the right direction, I would be grateful.

    Thank you

    Hi dlargeit,

First of all, off - welcome to the VMTN forums!

I'm with Josh26 I've ever seen any recommendations indicating that when a CCS cluster virtualization virtual machine by host is taken in charge. It is recommended to keep only a single node SCC by host (which is true for all virtual clusters or technologies like Exchange CSC/CCR/DAG), but there is nothing specific regarding the keep only a single virtual machine by host.

On the file page, you are actually right on that.  For Exchange 2007, the paging file must be on the amount of memory configured as well as 10 MB to account for overhead costs of the kernel.  It is recommended by Microsoft and it is planned to provide enough space page Exchange should exchange more provide the necessary overhead if meet you a server failure and need to create a complete memory dump.

You can find this recommendation here: http://technet.microsoft.com/library/aa996719 (EXCHG.80) .aspx

In terms of CPU allocation, which should really be made according to your individual needs rather than just give all the resources the VM on the ESXi host.  Microsoft lists the maximum recommended for processor resources (Planning Processor Configurations: Exchange 2007 help) and it says that 12 hearts is the maximum for mailbox or Hub Transport box.  Is your really big enough environment need a lot of CPU resources?  Why not start small and increase it if necessary?

You are in control of your own destiny in some of these configurations.  If you know the recommended page file size is 10 MB of RAM +, do not give the server more RAM is really needed, or you will have to pay for it in the consumed disk space to host the pagefile.  See the guide to memory resources (Planning Memory Configurations: Exchange 2007 help) to understand the maximum rates of memory for Exchange.  You will see that the maximum memory is 32GB, so there are very few reasons to assign all 48GB of RAM on your server, if it can even use.

In short, the size of the server based on the real needs and I am confident, that you will have a virtualized Exchange system that performs as well as physical.

One way to do this easier would be to create an array with the elements you want on it, as the name of the virtual machine, the use of the processor etc... and then you can filter/sort by CPU utilization, memory usage etc. and only have the Top 10 or anything else you like.

  • Is there a CPU compatible issue for an addition of a new host?

We are running a cluster of 3 servers ESXi 5.1 - 2 of them are Xeon E7440 2.4 GHz (64 GB of RAM) and 1 of them is Xeon X 5460 3.16 GHz (32 GB of RAM).

We would like to add a new server with SSD to this cluster (instead of replacing the old server)

Wonder if there is a potential problem? Needless to say, the CPU will have a span of quite different range.

Assuming that the new host is supported for ESXi 5.1, and all guests share a common mode of EVC, you shoudn't have problems add to the cluster.

  • Limits for the ESXi 5 VM cpu

I have a host running ESXi 5. Nothing fancy, just a system 6-core dual proc with hyperthreading, for a total of 12 cores @2. 66 ghz for about 31,92 ghz of total power.

The best solution for what I need would be to would be to wipe and install my os on it, but that cannot be done at present. For sizing purposes I need essentially the entire area. I can only create a virtual machine that is permitted to 8vcpu @2. 66 ghz. This creates a ceiling of ~21.28ghz booking. Does this mean I would lose about 30% of my box. If I saturate the virtual machine, I never see you over use of about 22ghz + hypervisor can be used? If so, any means to get around this without counting the horizontal evolution?

I guess another way to ask what would be, if I created a 2 vcpu vm on the host without defining reserves or limitations, it could never use all the systems of the available cpu capacity or it is just limited to some 2 vcpu is?

I'll just answer your last sentence as seems most logical.  If you only assign 2vCPU to a virtual machine it dimensionnera never higher that 2 CPU is a strict limit. Even if you have the "Unlimited" check the box checked that it does not mean that it will evolve to use all CPUS if he has, he will use again as a value of 2vCPU of resources.  All means of the unlimited checkbox, it is that the virtual machine can use all of the resources entrusted to him.

  • Total number of vCPU by host ESX to avoid list of the CPU allocation during the deployment of VM

    Hello
Can anyone please share your script to give a list because if all VMHost / total number of CPU of ESX managed by VCenter which is available?
It is for me to be able to determine what VMhost I can deploy my VM avoids vCPU allocation.
I understand that the best practice is maximum 4 vCPU unique VM by heart, so here's the example:
    Core 2 x 6 = 12 available vCPU
This is why there may be a maximum of 12 x 4 = 48 maximum used total vCPU.

    Hi again

IF you have a csv of the report to use this 1 line:

  • In ESXi multi-core CPU utilization

We have a Dell R710 ESXi server.  The server has dual processors core quad xeon 5620 which are estimated at 2.4 Ghz.  In vsphere client summary to the server of the CPU is reported as 8 x 2,393 Ghz processors.  Is this correct?  This would lead me to believe that I have about 19Ghz of cpu resources.  However, I feel that even if a quad core processor has 4 separate cores, they operate only at a combined max 2.4 Ghz (with this processor for example).  Could someone please shed some light on this subject?  I would greatly appreciate it.

    Andrew Stacey wrote:

No, a quad-core 2.4 GHz processor has four "cores" capable of executing code in every 2.4 Ghz each.

  • Free version of ESXi 4.1 CPU with 8 cores

    Hello

I would like some advice on the question of whether the free version of ESXi 4.1 supports servers with 4 CPU core CPU 8, because I find some contradictory documents on some he said supports only 6 core CPU and not 8. Can someone advise or confirm.

I think the EULA may need to be clarified.  If we ignore free ESXi for awhile, this document - https://www.vmware.com/download/eula/multicore.html - suggests that it's OK to run vSphere Standard for example on processors with 12 cores.   I only give 2 CPUs per physical CPU licenses as each license would cover only 6 of the 12 hearts.  Here is the example that includes the document

    > Example: A customer has already purchased vSphere Enterprise license. Remember that each license of vSphere Enterprise can be deployed on a > processor with up to 6 cores. However, the customer now wants to use these licenses on a newly acquired server with processor with 12 cores. > The client has two options:

    > Upgrade from the company of vSphere vSphere Enterprise Plus license, which provides a right to 12 strands and extra GOLD

    > 2 two vSphere Enterprise licenses for each processor with 12 cores.

It would not appear that vSphere 6 basic editions are hard coded to ignore carrots on it 6 but rather you must just the correct license in place.  With ESXi free since you can register an unlimited number (99 I think?)  processors and in essense, you have enough licenses processors to double for each physical processor.  It would not be what they want and it can be "fixed" in the future, but I'm not sure it would be a EULA violation vSphere.  The doc covers products 'vSphere '.

    This affect which products VMware?

    > This strategy affects the VMware vSphere products i.e. vSphere Essentials, vSphere Essentials Plus, vSphere Standard, Enterprise vSphere, vSphere > advanced and vSphere Enterprise Plus

so maybe they need to clarify their position for free ESXi.

  • ESXi v4 HP ML370G6 Performance issue - Nehalem has HT, cores to run 16 or 8 cores?

I'm about to go live with my last system for a client. The G6 is all simply amazing performance even compared to the G5 that I use for my own business. Nothing is clear on the advantages and disadvantages of enable Hyperthreading on Xeon E5530. With 2 processors QuadCore, HT active gives me 16 cores. The free version of ESXi gives me a max 4 hearts SMP for any machine I create.

I'm after what has worked well for other clients on the G5 and just double the virtual processors more. It remains to ask me if I win something using DO NOT HT. 24Gb of RAM, P410i/512 MB BBWC, 5x146Gb 10K DP ENT disks:

    • 1 kernel: Win2003x32 for AD

    • Core 2: Win2003x32 for the AD backup and print server (16 printers)

    • 4 core: Win2003x32 a little misbehaved 16 accounting software that now will not require turning off the other stuff to restart the ancient shit!

    • 4 core: Win2003x64 for file server - his own Enet Go through port 4 that comes with the G6 - virtually without any traffic to other servers

    • Basic 4: Win2003x32 & SQL Workgroup

    • Core 2: Win2003x32 & Exchange 2003 for the half company - due 16 GB limit on store

    • Core 2: Win2003x32 & Exchange 2003 for the half company - due 16 GB limit on store

    • Core 2: ClarkConnect (ClearOS) (Redhat 5) mail server Antispam, firewall, AV, ftp server.

It seems to work well in my tests, and the two Exchange servers work much better than the ML310G3 of the specialized units that are now extinct. There are a dozen of heavy users and a dozen more. A bunch of remote users who primarily use the groupware in the Clarkconnect box.

Any input welcome before going live this weekend.

Sounds like I should take into account the box 8 CPU or, as G5 (2 x Xeon 5440) units. Does this mean I have to turn off HT in the BIOS? Gives me 8-processor "faster" rather than "slower 16"?

Generally, there is no benefit to disabling HT on Nehalem (in stark contrast with previous implementations HT).

  • Two databases on a single server - CPU allocation

Is there a way of CPU resources between two databases in the same way that the resource groups can allocate resources within each database? Let's say split 60-40 between databases cpu?

The answer is no. I think, it seems that you encounter a performance problem, and you try to solve it using process priorities. Am I wrong? Or I'm going to upgrade my crystal ball?

If you were never able to do such thing, the first thing that comes to mind,... what you define as "the database" here, you do not have something you can touch and say "it's the database", the concept of database is a logical, not a physical concept, it is composed of memory, processes and files , and the main activity has to do with e/s where most of the time the problem of startup performance. even if you were able to abstract the logical concept of the DB in a single physical component, allocating CPU him would not be enough to solve performance problems.

I strongly suggest to detail why you want to do this assignment and then we can discuss alternatives from there on.

    XW6000 workstation, 2 x 3.06 Ghz Xeon processor, 4 GB RAM, Radeon X 1600 512 MB AGP, OS Windows 7 video card.

    Hello, all,.

I have a strange problem with this otherwise excellent camera. A couple of weeks, he has begun to close randomly and would usually start at the next attempt. I suspect the graphics card and replaced him as fans, cleaning the CPU fins cooling and re - apply CPU thermal paste. The computer was fine for a day or two and then become erratic, with the same symptoms as before. Then he refused to boot at all - the screen remains black, all the cooling fans would be out for a second, then rest static. I didn't hear any beep codes but the HD light was lit in green.

The PSU was then replaced by no effect. I went through the usual process of reinstalling components failure, removal/replacement RAM & other devices in order to see if they were the problem with no improvement. In all cases, the HD light would turn green for a second or two, the PSU/CPU fans would be like before kick and then the red light HD flash intervals of one second.

Finally I found the PSU and CPU fans would turn at maximum speed, when I disconnected the CPU power connector six pins. But of course the computer then wouldn't start. The left light shone right green and red.

The computer is now completely disassembled and I can't find anything obviously wrong (fade/broken) on the motherboard. Clearly, something is being short circuit when the power of the CPU is connected.

Is a new motherboard required or is there anything else I can try?

    Thanks in advance,

    esseff.

    It was the motherboard (again)!

I just set up the replacement for the replacement and everything works fine now. No problem with the revalidation of phone despite the change of the major component. Hope this helps someone with the same symptoms.
