  Yes you can, but there is a lot of work, a little complicated, time consuming and not worth the effort for most users.  The main reasons for this are...

  (1) the older backups will take a good amount of space on the new drive, limiting the space on the disk again.

  (2) Time Machine backups for the old files will continue... it will make a new copy of every Mac and then go forward again with incremental backups.

  A better plan would be to keep the old drive on hand for a few months, in which case you need to go back and look for a file. After a few months, you will have a beautiful story from backup to the new hard drive and no need of older backups so you can remove the old disk and keep around as a spare part or use it for other purposes.

  While you can partition the drive and save each Mac to a separate partition if you wish, there is really no need to do this since Time Machine will automatically create separate for each Mac backup files.

After a week, it stopped working and I now have an error message on my iMac saying "Unable to open file. I CAN'T seem to save my CC account and access both my iPad and computer, but cannot send usable files from apps on my iPad to the software on my computer. I also confirmed that I am connected to the apps and CC with the same user name and password. In addition, my computer and ipad have the same period.

  Any suggestions are appreciated! I'm up to the wire with urgent deadlines and have tried to solve this problem for two weeks and could not find a solution.

  Since you are aware CC Illustrator and the CC desktop application, you can see if this feature is shown to you in Illustrator CC?

  Open Illustrator CC and on the start screen, you will see a Mobile creations tab. Just tap and your mobile work should be there. (Attached picture is what the desktop will look like).

  Did you move the iPhoto library for the external hard drive or the iPhoto application, or both?

  How is formatted the external hard drive? Is the file system on the drive Mac OS extended (journaled) or other system files?  Is the drive directly connected by USB or similar, or is it a SIN?

  What about different DVD media? Have you tested the media DVD-R or DVD + R common?
  Have you tried different brands of DVD?
  I can't give you a properly answer why the drive can't burn your DVD - RW, but to my knowledge not every media is supported by the player.
  So I think you should check different DVDs.

  It's embarrassing, BUT I solved the problem by using TweakIU. It seems that in the workstation. The floppy drives were not verified. Verification of A & B readers did the trick.

  Clonezilla is not supported by Microsoft.

  If you are unable to boot from the Vista repair disk then you will need to go into the system BIOS and make sure that it is configured to boot from the DVD drive.
