Generational UCS/VMWare

Hello

I'm looking for clarification on how the Palo VIC presents the vNIC, how say/control which card vNIC to which ports physical and how best to configure my environment for VMWare.

Summary of material:

Blades (full-width) B250 with 2 cards of Palo VIC

5108 chassis with double FEX (double uplinks from each FEX)

2 x 6120 controllers with 2 x 10 Gbit links rising each to a pair of Nexus s 5020

Summary of the software:

UCS 1.3.0 boot loader, the kernel/system 4.1 version (3) N2(1.2d)

VMWare vSphere Enterprise Plus 4.1

According to my interpretation, Cisco and VMWare recommend against bandwidth limiting the interfaces - but prefer to go with actions and ability to burst.

Therefore, my desired construction is the following:

for each of the 4 available in B250 blade 10gbit interfaces, I want to have 2 vNIC (1 for VM distributed vSwitch [6Gbit minimum actions, 802. 1 q trunks], 1 for iSCSI [4 Gbit minimum actions, access port/no 802. 1 q trunk]). This means that my Service profile must define 8 vNIC altogether.

Q1: How can I make sure that I get 1 'data' and 1 'iscsi' vNIC per physical port?

Q2: how to set a policy to set the minimum bandwidth on each vNIC?

Q3: How do I control/make sure the binding order correct so that I can script my configuration of vSphere?

Generation of VMWare will be vswitch distributed containing all the 'data' vNIC, allowing control of network IO with actions defined to manage the various allowances for groups of data ports, console and VMotion. The vNIC iSCSI will each receive a VMKernel port dedicated.

Thank you very much in advance for any help.

Our installation program is not the same, but the principles can be applied as we also CIV.  To make sure that we had the installation of ports properly, I put into service six vNIC in UCSM to each host.  I put in service the first vNIC of fabric and the second vNIC fabric B - do not check the box "Fabric Failover"...  Repeat for other network cards for four.  This will give you 4 vNIC by fabric.  Note MAC addresses and which tissue they are attached.

Then, in case of VC and to configure your hosts, enter the network cards and line up the vmnic and MAC addresses so that you know how they trace.  When you configure your vSwitches, just make sure you add a vmnic from fabric and a fabric vmnic B.    Do this for the Service Console, vmkernel and VM switches.

If you make this unique environment of VIC inas, it will ensure that your vswitches are attached to every tissue.  I guess you can do this same thing with two VICs, since each card may appear independently in UCSM.

As for the bandwidth mgmt and others, check out http://bradhedlund.com/ its recent messages are on the networks of the UCS.

Until now, we had a network physically segmented with internal and external vtp different areas/zones. Keys "inner area" hear a VLAN and keys "outer zone" along a VLAN different. VLANs are not propagated between different areas for security reasons, are isolated.

Currently, we started to work with UCS + VMWARE, and we are facing difficulties. According to the previous model, if virtualize us servers within the internal battery of the UCS area, we cannot not virtualize servers within the outer external in the same UCS, since I wish to propagate VLAN switches area internal as well as for the farm of the UCS, mix. As a result, the isolation would be lost.

I'm reviewing my network base, in order to adapt current infrastructure to the new with UCS + VMWARE, without missing any point security.

My main point, is whether it is possible to virtualize external virtual machines and internal area in the same UCS, without compromising the security of my network.

Could you give me some advice or design guide?

    Kind regards

    Hello-

You are right that upward through UCS 1.4 all them VLAN should be available on the switches upstream.  However, UCS 2.x introduced a feature named "Disjoint L2."  By using this feature, you will be able to connect interconnect fabric to your internal network and the DMZ, then configure the VLANs to blades.

  • By script tool install abandoned or forgotten in ESX 4 generator?

I know that, in version BETA RC of ESX 4, generation tool of numerical facility you would find by allowing a tomcat configuration was not available. He said that this should be available on the version of ESX 4 GA and I have not found any mention/mention in the documents.

In previous versions of ESX, you would change the following file:

    /usr/lib/vmware/webAccess/tomcat/apache-tomcat-5.5.17/webapps/ui/WEB-INF/struts-config.xml

comment on the scriptedinstaller module and restart the webAccess service.

By the RC release, I noticed the structure was not similar and that the struts - config.xml existed under the standard repertoire is no longer but that it found another file that seems as he controlled webAccess page and which can be seen at: /usr/lib/vmware/hostd/docroot/index.html

When you open a file, you will notice the following line:

         <!-- XXX: Bug 270062

          <h4><script type="text/javascript">document.write(ID_ESXServerSI);</script></h4>

          <p><script type="text/javascript">document.write(ID_ESXServerSIDesc);</script></p>

          <ul>
             <li><script type="text/javascript">document.write('<a href="/ui/scriptedInstall.do">'+ ID_LogInSI +'</a>');</script></li>
          </ul>
          -->

This has existed in the RC BETA and still does in the GA release and uncomment comments and restarting the webAccess service, you will get a link for the scripted Installer but modules aren't always load.

Someone at - he managed to get this working or has been deleted or forgotten?

FYI - I know that you can take a look at KS.cfg previous and a part of the documentation provided in the installation guide to create a new kickstart for ESX 4, but the question is about the generation tool and if it's been deleted.

After a repair of an already open a question problem, a new question was raised.  I open another question because this problem is new, and I thought that a new question must be requested in this regard.

Following the instructions of this question, I have re-recognized my blade twice.  Looking at the KVM, I have not seen a no boot device message, which was to be expected.  I went to re - install ESXi 5.5 (which was already installed on the SD card before the open-ended question) and I am now met with the following message is displayed:

isolinux: disk error 20, AX = 422D, reader EF

I rebooted several times the blade to re - try unsuccessfully to installation.  I even went back to an ISO of 5.1 ESXi, who gave the best results.

  • Nested error Server R2 2012 - "hypervisor does not work.

    Good afternoon

I'm having some trouble from a virtual computer inside my 2012 R2 VM server. I search around the internet for a while find several articles and forums on how to configure nested visualization including the official document on these forums but I still have a problem.

    My configuration:

    Physical server running - ESXI 5.5 1623387

Physical machine - dell R720 (2 x e5-2690 - supports the VT - X and the EPT and it is enabled in the BIOS, esxcfg confirms with '3')

New VM - Server R2 2012, VM version 9 installation (created by the web console vmx-09)

I added / tried every configuration option I found:

-J' created the virtual machine console web and checked "expose hardware virtualization assisted for the guest OS.

-I made that vhv.enable = "TRUE" in the vmx configuration

-J' tried to add hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = 'FALSE' to the vmx configuration

-J' tried to add vhv.allow and more vhv.enable in the/etc/vmware/config, but neither makes a difference (discovered he was not necessary later thanks to a post on this forum)

-J' tried to set the name of guestOS to "winhyperv" in the .vmx file

-J' tried the type parameter of "ESXi 5.x" guestOS in the thick client

-J' set the cpu/mmu virtualiztion tick at the last

-J' tried to set the registry values level 1 as seen here ecx

    -J' have ensured that monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware".

-J' uninstalled the hyper-v role and reinstalled after you make these changes without result

-J' tried an another 5.5 ESXi 1331820 host with these settings and it does not work (VT - X confirmed as well)

-J' tried 2016 instead of 2012 R2 server and it does not work

I think it's all the things I tried. I'm sure I've probably missed something very obvious, but any help would be appreciated.

This specific virtual machine has not generated a vmware.log file but still one of my virtual machines to test (with the same exact questions on the second physical host) has generated a couple and I enclose you one of them, and more can be provided if necessary.

    Thank you!

  • Possible to add vmw:ExtraConfig in output OVF?

I tried a bit of the drop-down list of the selectable for the output in the OVF properties section.  I can't no matter where I put the vmw:ExtraConfig so that the FVO generated by VMware Studio has the configuration I want.  In particular, I'm looking for a way to set rtc.diffFromUTC key-value, so that it is set when a person is making the appliance (VMX).   Is there a way to do this in VMware Studio?

What Studio version do you use?

and what is your engine configuration? (workstation, ESX, VC etc.).

In the latest version of Studio (2.1), we have introduced an option to add the vmw:Config option in the profile.

You can hand edit the profile by going to opt/vmware/var/lib/build/profiles/$(myprofile.xml) «»

Remove the wmw:Config under "vadk:VMWConfigSection_Type" and add the required values of key/values.

Optionally, you can change the end ovf to change the VirtualHardwareSection to:

            .
            .
            .

      .
      .
      .

    TO

            .
            .
            .

      .

VMW:config is supported in VC 4.1.

VMW:ExtraConfig is supported in VC 4.0

VMW:config also allows you to set the options in ExtrConfig:

    Hope that helps.

  • Is there a VM event for the VM host name change?

    Hello

I have an application that is in talks with the VC to get the events from the virtual computer.

I have a virtual machine on which I install VMWare tools to get the host name of the virtual machine. From now, the first time that the virtual machine gets up, my request to get the host name for this virtual machine. Now, if the host name of this virtual machine changes, is there any event that will be generated by VMWare or VC tools that my application can subscribe to in order to choose the host name change?

    Thank you

There is no integrated case that will capture this.  The virtual machine has the dns name property that can be extracted from the db, or using one of the vi toolkits.  You can run gets against these data and validate it against the previous value, but no direct case is only triggered when the host inside the virtual machine name is changed.

  • UCS Manager &amp; Vmware

    Hi guys,.

Before we set our Cisco UCS solution in we have Vmware running with Nexus 1000v switch. After the installation of the Cisco UCS solution, we migrated a lot off the coast of the old system to the new. By reading the manual on setting up vCenter, Port and VMS profiles in UCS Manager, it seems that this creates a new on the nexus 1000v vsm. Anyway is to import what we have so that we see in the UCS Manager?

David, the functionality of the UCS you speak is known as VN-Link in the material while the Nexus 1000v is known as VN-link in the software. Installation and configuration is very similar to the Nexus 1000v but they are separated distributed virtual switches.

Unfortunately, you can't use both because they require the VEM loaded on ESX hosts and the UCS VN-link requires a login policy dynamic UCS vNIC. If you use the 1000v, you will not be able to use the VM tab in UCSM and you will not see anything on the virtual computers tab on a Service profile.

In my opinion the Nexus 1000v is preferable because is offer more features, more scalable and is managed/set NX - OS. Of the UCS VN-link option also limits the number of virtual machines, you can run on a host computer, because the dynamic vNIC takes in charge a maximum of 56 depending on how rising your chassis to your FIs. If you have only 2 uplinks of your chassis then the max machines virtual host when using the UCS VN-Link is 20-24, according to the number of vNIC ESX host, you create as part of your Service profile.

    Hello

In our lab, I test with 5 VMware and Cisco UCS. We run UCSM 2.0 (1 m). I am now to test the auto hand deploy. I have auto configuration to deploy in VMware and it works (first of all, I had some problems with DHCP on windows which is solved in version 2.0 of UCSM (q)). vSphere gets deployed to the blade. When the blade (vShpere) wants to connect to vCenter I get an error of vCenter has enough licesing for this action. I loaded a lot of low-income VMware. When I create a virtual machine, it starts perfectly and apears in vCenter.

I search on the internet for people who have the problem of the simailer, but could not find.

Some body the same problem our help me?

    Thanks in advance,

    Robin,

This looks more like a VC related question (UCS) platform.  UCS has no effect on the functionality of licenses of the VC.

If the host does not connect to the CR, how are you VMs to "start perfectly and appear in vCenter?
