Have I copied my VMs correctly data store?

I downloaded two virtual machines from the data store on my ESXi host using the vClient. I ended up with two separate folders on my local machine, but when I look inside the content do not correspond to the respective the VM files in the data store.

I get a file hard and a *-flat.vmdk file. I searched and if I'm not mistaken the hard is a kind of pointer to the *-flat.vmdk file.

In fact, my question is when I upload these files to my ESXi host will merge two files and be recognized by virtual machines?

Thank you

These 2 files will remain there after you download in the data store, and you need two of them to present the virtual disk to the virtual machine. In VC, you can not see - flat.vmdk always and Yes, you're right about the description of hard you mentioned earlier.

  • ESXI 5.1 "the disc is not thin-provisioned" after copying to the new data store vmdk

I wanted to create an external backup as a 2nd VM ready-to-run on the 2nd data store.

I've removed all snapshots, stop the machine virtual and exported the OVF file to a computer, adjusted to the size of the original virtual machine starts in Gparted to update the partition and restart. All very well.

I then tried to deploy the OVF in the data store alternative (235GB slim, thickness according to the deployment of 250 Wizard). I tried both thick and thin but the error message "cannot deploy the OVF. The operation was cancelled by the user.

I then manually downloaded the VMDK & OVF file to the 2nd data store and tried to inflate but then received the message "a specified parameter was not correct. The disc isn't thin provisioned. ».

It seems I have dealing with the same thing, as this is the document here (http://pubs.vmware.com/Release_Notes/en/vsphere/55/vsphere-vcenter-server-55u3-release-notes.html).  However, I have no idea what to do now... and I'm worried because it seems that my backup plan may not work if I can't restore an OVF/VMDK from a disk of visas.

The solution to the first problem here: https://communities.vmware.com/message/2172950#2172950 that solved my problem 2nd too.

  • How will I know that I have not to oversubscribe a VMFS data store?

I guess the manual way would be to check each VM, its data store and note its ability of VHDs + which datastore, it was stored.

Any other way to do this at the same time and get the result in a simpler way?

This is especially important if I apply Zimbra Network in vSphere environment.

In RVTools, go to the tab "vDatastore". There is a line called "Supplied MB". If this number is greater than that of the line to the left "MB of capacity", then you have overprovisioned

  • Copying files to the data store

I use the server ESXI 4.0 and a few Linux VM running. I would like to ask if there is a way to copy any file to any directory VM on the host main data store. If there is a way could someone please suggest some tips.

You can use the data store browser (right-click on the icon for the data store).

    Or VMware Converter.

Or enable SSH and SCP or FastSCP.

  • Copy VM in the data store. 2GB becomes 30 GB!

    Hi all

ESXi 4, using the vSphere client. I browse the data store, then copy a VM folder into another folder in the same data store. It takes almost 1 hour.

When I take a glance in the destination folder, the file becomes 30 GB!, the original 2 GB file.

What is going on? Now I wonder, it takes so long to copy.

On reflection, it's as if, Thin Provisioning disappears when you are copying. 30 GB is the size of the VM disk.

What is the best way to create a 'clean' of the virtual machine copy, can I just copy paste the folder?

    Thanks in advance.

Copy operation to create discs always thick.

If you want to copy on a thin disk, you must use the vmkfstools command:

    Thank you!

    Hello
You asked for instructions on how to readd a missing measure.
    Basically, it's pretty easy:
in the VMFS to VMFS-based volume header section, you can assign extends it.
Lets say that the basic volume is mpx.vmhba1:C0:T3:L0:1
first of all extend is mpx.vmhba1:C0:T4:L0:1
    second extension is mpx.vmhba1:C0:T5:L0:1
Then you will see this string in the VMFS header:
    vmhba1:3:0
    and a little later

    MPX.vmhba1:C0:T3:l0:1

    MPX.vmhba1:C0:T4:l0:1

    MPX.vmhba1:C0:T5:l0:1
Just change the list of stretches.
But: normally you can't change this section at all, and to add to the confusion, these values are stored in RAM is not trivial to change this value correctly.
I highly recommend that instead of try it yourself and repeat all the mistakes I made while learning it - call me.
I rather help you personally to give dangerous advice that will probably make things worse.

Is there a way to fix this? All I can think is that at some point the virtual machine could have migrated from one to another data store. It's never been renamed; Among the stores of data has no file like below...

  • Reformatting my data store

    Hello

I have a 1.36 Terabyte ATA drive in my ESXi machine. The maximum size of a VM is 256 gigabytes because my block size is 1 meg.

I need to create a virtual 800 meg. Based on my reading I have to reformat the data store.

I have two virtual machines on this data store I want to keep. My plan is to:

1 export the two virtual to the FVO.

2 remove the data from the VSphere Client store.

    3. Add the datastore to return. I need to reformat the data at the time store?

If I am invited, I will choose 8 meg blocks so I can have large virtual methods.

My plan is viable? I just can't remember if adding a store of data raises the need for a new format. Should I still remove the data store for the reformat once I exported the virtual methods in the ovf? I would like to go with the VSphere Client if possible since I'm not real handy with linux commands.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Mike Gallery

    Mike,

    (1) I would recommend export under VMs VMware, not OVFs.

    (2) Yes

    (3) Yes, you will be asked for the size on the creation of the data store.

    All this from the GUI.

  • Unable to scp - r of the local data store a host to another data store local host

Using PuTTY to connect to the host server

Running command to copy VM to a data store to another data store (the two DS hosted locally on 2 different servers)

1 - Check the SSH configuration on both sides and compare... (/ etc/ssh/sshd_config)

The remote server will only accept v2 connections and you try to do

a connection v1. So either enable support of the v1 on the remote side. Or use

    keys v2 and id_rsa/id_dsa.

    2. check the versions ESX & patch level you used on both sides (ESX 3 xx build xxx)

3 - also, you can check ssh version of protocol running rpm - qa | grep openssh.

    Good luck!

  • Get-hard drives - storage drives data store migrate between data warehouses

    Hi all

Our current storage configuration with specially designed split-role of the bases of data storages (OS, LOG SQL, SQL DATA, APP, Exchange roles, etc.)  I do a storage store on my VMware Infrastructure and hoped to target only the disks of virtual machines that are on any data store and migrate them to another.  Rather new to PowerCli if you're wondering why the bellows of the command does not work and the reports that the file is locked.

    Get-hard drive - data store 'Datastore01 ' | Moving-hard drive - data store Datastore02

If the machine virtual itself is made aware of the command?  Would I have to enumarte the virtual machines on the first data store and then target discs that everyone has and redirect it to the hard disk Move command?

    Thanks in advance

Yes, you are banging in the sequence of commands trying to move a file on the data store without referencing the virtual machine. According to the State of the virtual machine (lit or not) of different things happen

    • VM power off - the disc is moved and the virtual machine is broken (the vmx file will always point to the original location for the HD that is no longer there)
    • Virtual MACHINE power - the disk is locked, so it cannot be moved (the error you have seen)

Another thing to keep in mind is that the configuration of the VM is also on a data store, so if you want to move the entire virtual machine you can just move the hard drives

If all the virtual machines on a data store have all their HDs on this data store then you can do something like

    Get - VM - data store 'Datastore01 ' | Move-VM - data store "Datastore02".

To access the VM configuration, but also his records. If you have virtual machines where the disks into a single virtual machine, then you will have a little more work to do to sort the records that must be moved

    Get - VM - data store 'Datastore01 ' | Get-hard drive | Where-Object {$_.} FileName.Contains ("[Datastore01]")} | Moving-hard drive - data store "Datastore02".

This is all virtual machines with a component (hard drive or configuration) on Datastore1, and then for each VM is all hard disks that are on Datastore01 and the Datastore02

  • A cluster of vCenter will share a single data store on a NAS?

I have a vCenter 3 ESX host cluster. I want that these 3 hosts to share a single data store on a NAS (Dell Powervault md36xxi).

The goal is that if one of the hosts go down, the other two still have access to the unique shared data store on the NAS.

So far, I've been able to create a separate data store for each host on my NAS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Since we normally have a 1:1 mapping between LUNS and data store, if the three hosts share the same LUN, then they will also share the data store even... just the map the LUN to all three hosts, using the vCenter create a store of data with vmfs format and three guests will share the data store. If after having create the data store on the hosts of the first, if other hosts do not see yet the store data, just try to rescan the host for new storage devices and data warehouses.
