How to control an inverter by port series

We just bought a CyberPower ups with a serial port. The inverter will not be used to keep the computer running the LabVIEW program, but it is for different equipment. The standard software to turn off your computer on a signal loss of power UPS, therefore, is not useful. What I need is a way to monitor the serial port in LabVIEW so I can get the ups on its state information (power, battery level, etc.) (This UPS does not support the SNMP).

The manufacturer provides no documentation on the serial port protocol. I tried to install their software and espionage. It seems that when their software is installed, nothing happens through the serial port. I'm guessing that their software only controls some handshaking lines. It does state that if the UPS is on current alternative or not and whether it is connected or not. He tells not levels of battery or details. And no traffic is evident on the serial port.

Is there a common protocol known for this type of behavior UPS?

(By the way, I found this old thread: http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/read-javascript-on-web-page-to-shut-down-on-power-failure/m-p/782542... ) Another brand of UPS, different solution).

Thank you

DaveT

CyberPower has responded to my request with the necessary information... I'll post here a brief summary in case someone else needs it.

They use the handshake lines to report the status of the inverter. I think the reason is that they can also lead material "Mute" (relay or other) with the same interface. In any case, they are using DCD for low battery signal, CTS to not report air conditioned. The PC should keep high RTS during communication. DTR can be put up for 7 seconds tell the UPS shut down within two minutes.

I assume (hope) that this is a standard interface that many of the use of the inverter. Please post here if you find that it is used by other manufacturers.

See you soon,.

  • Adding a port series HP xw6600, xw8600, and other workstations

    Based on some advice from Dan_in_WGBU (which is a HP engineer and an excellent source of information in this forum), here's how to add a serial port backplane HP.  To access a serial port still can be very useful for some projects.

    As is done with many more recent work positions the xw6600 and the xw8600 both have no ports series on their basket funds, but HP has designed some of their motherboards with a special type of powered serial port header consisting of two rows of pins... 8 pins on 1 side, 7 on the other.  Who is supposed to accept a cable sheet with a record of 8 holes with a 'white' (filled plastic) which allows the other end go on the motherboard header in only one correct orientation.  For the xw6600 this header is down on the lower edge of the motherboard, just left of the SATA port to the left, under the lowest PCI slot.  It's a '8 x 2 males header' with a single missing pin, which is where plastic filled wil end of shooting overall.  The same device is used with a number of new jobs Z, too.

    The small device at the other end of the ribbon cable is known as a "2nd serial port adaper" since when virtually all workstations had a built-in serial port in the bottom of basket.  With the HP xw6600 and before xw8600 workstations this unit should really be called the "1st serial port adapter".  Dan indicates that this unit can be used on any HP motherboards with special serial port header powered 8 x 2 this necessary.  You can see the unique circuit board at the end of supplypaper-mother of the device below, which receives power from the motherboard to the appropriate serial interface and signals.  Note that this is not a simple transmission device on a cable in water, which is used by some other manufacturers to get signals to/from the motherboard serial port.  Head of series of motherboard HP 8 x 2 location is easy to find in your Workstation Service and technical reference Guide.  These manuals are easy to find via Google.

    Combined perimeter wire / Ribbon / two brackets PCI 'part option' number PA716A, but the key for a cheap purchase on eBay must know he has reference number is 264534-001 283984-001 (alias).  You can find them on eBay in one of these three designations, with the more expensive under the option part number.  Make sure you get the included ribbon cable... Mine cost me about $10.00 total, including shipping.

    XP/W7 32/64-bit OS will recognize this material added automatically, and I bet that Windows 8.1 would be too.  Here is an example of the complete kit, you will get directly from HP, including full-height and low profile PCI brackets.  Many found on eBay are sold without this special ribbon cable coming from the top... Be sure to get one of these.  I bought used... difficult to wear one of these stars:

    I can't post the patterns, but it's OK for me to show the pinout of the connector on the motherboard, since most of them are already in technical reference guides.

    The serial port follows the standard RS232, once the card is installed.  On the motherboard, the serial port UART signals are routed to the Super IO on the connector of P53, but the motherboard is not the interface RS232 circuit needed to provide the interface voltage levels to meet the EIA/TIA-232 standard and to provide ESD protection on the serial port.  So do not try to connect a serial port connector and connect it directly to the motherboard.  It will not work and may damage the motherboard.

    The PA716A card is very simple.  It contains an RS232 interface circuit, more a handful of components ensure the electric compatibility and quality of the signal.  This card is identical to the one used on some HP desktop computers and workstations since about 2002.  If you can get one at a great price, it's probably not worth making your own.

  • With LabVIEW how to control an instrument with a RS232 output, using a USB RS232 converter cable.

    With LabVIEW how to control an instrument with a RS232 output, using a USB RS232 converter cable, since I do not have rs232 ports. I have two instruments I want for the control in this way. One is a guarantee of strength Imada SPAS with RS232 output. The other is a micrometer Panasonic HL-G103-S-J laser sensor which is RS422. I have done significant programming LabVIEW using GPIB, but I have no experience with devices such as these. No matter what tutorial or examples would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

    When you plug the USB-RS-232 converter, it installs a driver under Windows which makes it look like any other RS-232 port.  You may need to install the driver of everything that came on the CD with the converter.  It will get a Com as Com5 port number according to what is the next available number.

    If you use a LabVIEW project, you must set the time of sampling in the properties of the node (see SamplingInterval.png). But this time to refresh the data should be high enough. If you take into account this update of time trying to control your way out.

  • How to control (or know) the speed of iteration of While loops?

    Hello world!

    Currently, I am implementing a 2 bit counter in LabVIEW. Fortunately, I was able to find examples on the forums of NOR.

    Yet, in real life, speed of the ILO 2 counters are controlled by a clock switching frequency to produce different outputs 4.

    In VI I downloaded, the 2 bit counter plays quickly with an unknown speed. Trying to put timing delays and other tools, but I have to at least be able to control the 'real' speed of counter 2 Bit inside the while loop.

    Is there a any basis on what is the speed of iteration of the While loop when the loop? I have really need to know the real speed and how to control this speed because I need to sync for demultiplexing purposes.

    Thank you and best regards.

  • How to control 2 motor epos using microcontroller 50/5

    Hello. I did a program of integrated epos of labVIEW for control 1 motor epos. I make the program using the sub - vi from labVIEW epos data, but I don't know how to control 1 motor. Can anyone help me or tell me how to control 2 motors or wad is necessary? Thanks for your help :-D

    Hi Spydi,

    I don't think you need the CANopen library since you already use the instrument EPOS Driver.

    Currently using a NI-CAN device to connect your controller? This is a device for both engines I think?

    We are not very familiar with this set of drivers because it is not created by NOR, but I think all you have to do is to change the axis of entry to determine which engine is controlled.

    So probably your first engine corresponds to the axis 0 (default value in the example program), then your second engine corresponds to the axis 1. When you want to send commands to the different engines, set the ID of node/keyhandle axis accordingly.

    I hope this helps.

  • INTERFACE with the waterfall design: how 2 controls arranged in a single line?

    Hi all

    Cascade using I can easily drag and drop the control in the definition of qml and can preview visually. But it seems to draw the controls row-by-row. How do control the position absolutely on one line?

    In this case, you must use the DispositionAbsolue as the layout for this container, but note that you must specify the coordinates for each control. See the example below to place two buttons on the same line:

    import bb.cascades 1.0
    import bb.system 1.0

    Page {
        Container {
            layout: AbsoluteLayout {}

                Button {
                    id: btnConn
                objectName: "btnConn"
                text: "Connect"
                preferredWidth: 330
                    layoutProperties: AbsoluteLayoutProperties {
                        positionX: 44
                        positionY: 260
                    }
            }

            Button {
                id: btnDisc
                objectName: "btnDisc"
                text: "Disconnect"
                preferredWidth: 330
                    layoutProperties: AbsoluteLayoutProperties {
                        positionX: 394

    Hi crispoyz,

    You can override the drawfocus fields for this method.

    Try with this code. This is an example of code just to understand.

    class CustomField extends Field
        {
            int width = 100;
            int height = 100;
            String _text;

            public CustomField(String text)
            {
                super(Field.FOCUSABLE);
                _text = text;
            }

            protected void layout(int width, int height) {
                setExtent(getPreferredWidth(), getPreferredHeight());

            }

            protected void drawFocus(Graphics graphics, boolean on)
            {
                if(on)
                {
                    graphics.setColor(Color.GREEN);
                    graphics.fillRect(20, 10, getPreferredWidth()-50, getPreferredHeight()-30);
                    graphics.setColor(Color.RED);
                    graphics.drawText(_text, (width - getFont().getAdvance(_text))/2,(height - getFont().getHeight())/2);

                graphics.drawText(_text, (width - getFont().getAdvance(_text))/2,(height - getFont().getHeight())/2);
