Hi DonnaPeterson,

Click Start-> run, type &-> chkdsk c: / f-> ok. You will be asked to schedule the scan of the disc, restart your pc.

If above used to work, start your pc in safe mode and try.

I hope this helps.

From what you say, you are probably unable to start Windows.

In this case, when you start the computer, keep tapping the key "F8" on the keyboard until the Advanced menu comes up. Then choose "Safe Mode".

You will see something like your ordinary, here to enter office "chkdsk volume: /f" (replace with your hard drive volume, in most cases, it's 'c') at the command prompt.

I am trying to open some of my files and it always tells me that the file is damaged and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility... I searched my computer for "chkdsk utility" and can't find that. Help, please!

Open my computer, click on the drive (for example, drive C) > properties > Tools tab > difficulty check now, put a check mark automatically file system errors > start.

    Two observations:

1 symefa seems to be linked to something of Norton/Symantec called "Symantec Extended File Attributes" that seems related to Unix file data, so why it is present on a Windows system is a good question. A position I've seen connects it with Norton Internet Security 2010/2011 and suggests that uninstall NIS using theNorton removal tool will solve the problem.

    2. the System Volume Information folder is a folder 'hidden super' which is not normally accessible.  This is where Windows XP stores the system restore points andother information important to the operating system .  I suspect that Norton/Symantec has decided to take advantage of the great hidden nature of this file in order to hide some of his own thing.  You can access the System Volume information as described herehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/309531 and delete the offending file.  But I would get rid of NIS first and then delete the file.

    1. when exactly you get this error message?
    2. don't you make changes on the computer before this problem?

Check if the problem persists in the clean boot state.

From your computer by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine if a background program is interfering with your game or program. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot".

There is no problem at all with the two programs - they run flawlessly, as they have always done.

but I have no idea what causes these notifications to pop up - something must be wrong

So I was trying to run Chkdsk, the message said, opening cmd as administrator, then "chkdsk /f c:" but then I get this error:

I did restart and wait that chkdsk is running just after start-up but then:

How this can be resolved without having to reinstall windows?

If you have the system file corruption, you are probably at the end of the rope - so to speak.  Try to rerun the SFC.  Sometimes a 2nd or even 3rd run corrects corruption.

Try the system restore.  It can solve your problem if she wasn't there too long.  Usually, it is best to do the restore from SafeMode (F8 at startup)

Much more likely, you will need to re - build.  Choice:

1 restore the partition from the factory

    2. any re - install a Win7 disc

    3. implement non-destructive install

If I were in your shoes, I would like to re - install Windows 7.  It's a tedious process - may 6 to 12 hours passed depending on the speed of your Internet connection and your computer, and it has the amount of memory.  Such a process will lead you to a purely clean and absolutely pristine system that will have significantly improved performance.

First back up your data, but do something.  Windows Easy Transfer can create a file for a later transfer. For this, use a large external hard drive.

Now find the software tester training from the manufacturer of your hard drive.  Run three tests to ensure you have a reliable hard drive before starting this process.  It may take a few hours, but I wouldn't do that until this, and you're confident.  If necessary, replace the hard drive - not a particularly expensive or difficult process.

Choice 1: If your computer came with a factory restore partition, restore that.  Learn how to access the factory restore partition.  It is likely to be found using F8 during the startup of the existing system.

According to what you have purchased, you must then many UN-installing of unwanted programs.  Don't let no one antivirus or internet security system installs until you are at the end of this process - the last thing you do.  Also do not put a password on your computer until you have completely finished.  If the antivirus or Internet security is installed in this choice 1, uninstall it.  Now start Windows Update, but first change so that it will give you all the updates Microsoft, not only Windows ones. There are probably hundreds of them and it will take hours, but you don't have to watch it.  There will be several rounds of updates.  Keep the new verification updated to what there not.

Now, install your applications, but only the most immutable stable, for example Microsoft Office.  You can have a few more rounds of updates after that.  Do a Defrag.  No data yet.

Then take a step that almost nobody does, but if you are already in a similar situation, even once, you'll thank yourself for making.  Create a system image using the Maintenance until the restoration.  Use of the DVD - from 2 to 4.  It will take nearly an hour, but when you are finished, you will have a DVD set that can be used to restore the system to this account or a new drive is precisely what you have so far.  While you're at home spend 5 minutes and create a CD repair system Windows7.

Of course, after that, you can add your volatile applications such as Flash Player, etc..  Then run Windows Easy Transfer to retrieve all your data and settings.  It's positively amazing how it works, you will find that you won't see a difference with before except that it will be incredibly faster.

Choice 2: Fact, I prefer this option. Use an original DVD of Microsoft Windows 7, preferably Service Pack 1. It can be any DVD of Windows 7 to the same variety of product - for example the publishing house and 32 or 64 bit depending on your system.   Make sure you have the key of Activation for Microsoft Windows written down.   The only downside to this option is that it is possible but not likely that you might have to find a driver.  This doesn't happen often because even the drivers that the Windows 7 installation process itself does not, will be probably provided in your first pass of Windows Update. Once you get the Windows installation, everything above will be the same.

Choice 3:  Follow this link for a good description of how to do

http://WindowsSecrets.com/top-story/WIN7S-no-reformat-nondestructive-reinstall/   This choice will require a lot of time to Windows updates as well.

    Notes:

I will not work on a computer with ANY Internet security product in this regard.  Everything you want or need is an antivirus product.  The other stuff that is part of their packages don't you will that cause problems.

Intel has a utility to update driver (assuming that yours is Intel based) which is absolutely excellent.

You don't need a disc burner program.  Windows had built.

After you're done create a restore point.

I don't know what is causing this problem but would be
suspicious, it is related to a corrupted or obsolete
    video driver.

If they improve the question, you should look for the
site Web of MFG. your video card
a updated driver Win XP compatible video. Or...
If your computer is a laptop... Search support
site of the manufacturer of your computer.

If you do not know the make and model of your
Video adapter, see the documentation that
    supplied with the computer.

Also you can find info on your video by driver
go to Device Manager: you can launch
By clicking Device Manager on... Start/run and
    type or copy / paste:
    devmgmt.msc
    And then press ENTER.

Expand "Graphics cards" and right click
the name of your graphics... then
choose... Properties / tab pilot... FYI.

You should find the make and model of your
adapter display as well as the version of the driver.

If the driver on the Web site is no longer
    current than you run...
Download and install it. In addition, installation
instructions that should be followed closely
should be available on the support site.

Once installed the new video driver... you

  • I have a computer running VISTA. The CD-ROM/DVD-rom does not work and can not read the CD of the program that I placed in it.

It won't read a DVD.  It will not read ANY CD or DVD.  I tried 12 different CD/DVD.  This isn't an upgrade to Vista; the computer came "made for Vista" with Vista installed on it.  I had added Nero.  I removed Nero.  I did all the updates. I have not released the driver and reinstalled.  He claims to have the latest driver software, but it won't work.  The computer can see the CD/DVD, but he calls it a 'CDROM '.  It is not the case.  It is a DVD/Cd-RW with Labelflash.

I did everything suggested that past discussions.  I ran FIXIT program that claims that the drive works properly.  It is not the case.

I tried to get various programs to recognize.  They cannot see the installed media.

    I uninstalled iTunes.

Please do not give me the answer of cut-and - paste stock; It does not work.

Please tell me what to do to make Vista see the media inserted in the CD/DVD-RW drive.

    Thank you.

Well, if you have tried all the usual bugs try this:

Then go to right click on UNINSTALL - - CD/DVD - Device Manager CHECK THE DRIVERS to REMOVE and
    continue.

    Reset.

Occasionally, install an upgrade or a re - install will fix the problem and of course the drive or other hardware issues
    could be at stake.

    =====================================

Here's the answer, just in case there is something you don't have, and I start up and down.

    Try this - Panel - Device Manager - CD/DVD - double-click on the device - driver tab - click
Update the drivers (this will probably do nothing) - then RIGHT click the drive - UNINSTALL - REBOOT
This will refresh the default driver stack. Even if the reader does not appear to continue below.

Then, work your way through these - don't forget the drive might be bad, could be a loose cable
or slight corrosion on the contacts (usually for a laptop) and other issues.

Another possibility is that the cables are loose. Remove ALL power, then make sure that the cables in both
