ACS 5.7 - Virtual Machine requirements

Hi all
in a customer site, we have 4 4.2 ACS (one in each of the 4 main campus) synchronized to the former.
We spend almost any network environment, and now it's time to replace the system of AAA.
I intend to install a 5.7 ACS in a Virtual Machine of VMware as primary and the other as secondary.

But I have some difficulties to read the technical data sheet.

In our scenario for the moment, we have close to 2000 concurrent users (802.1 x + admin + VPN): can you help me with the hardware requirements?
RAM: 4 to 64 GB... What is the right amount of RAM?
Disc: it takes 500 GB on each server, or just to school, which should be collector journal del? Is 500 GB too for 'only' 2000 users?
Thanks in advance,
N

Hi Nicola,

Please check below for responses to your concerns:

1) in our scenario for the moment, we have close to 2000 concurrent users (802.1 x + admin + VPN): can you help me with the hardware requirements?
RAM: 4 to 64 GB... What is the right amount of RAM?

Just by allocating 4 GB of RAM, it works perfectly, however, the most you could add would be better.

2) disk: there are 500 GB on each server, or just to school, which should be collector journal del? Is 500 GB too for 'only' 2000 users?

Collector log must be distributed with 500 GB of disk space, regardless if he will have a lead role or secondary.

However, I suggest if possible to allocate 500 GB on both servers, even if the other will not work as a collector of newspaper.

Note: Please mark it as answered as appropriate.

  • virtual machines require less RAM?

    Hello

I am a .NET developer & SQL to an organization of average size (100s of users of the application). We use VMWare virtual machines for many of our production servers. the guest OSes are Windows Server 2003, but I don't know what version of VMWare.

I noticed that my SQL production machine has only 800 MB (right click on my computer - & gt; Properties). This seems much too small for a production SQL Server. I asked our admin on this issue, and he said that VMS do not need as much memory as physical machines because they can exploit the memory of the host.

My question - is this true? IM an ignornant bits on virtual machines, but my first thought would be the guest OS is limited to his own sandbox - if the guest OS is set to 800 MB, how could he 'awareness' of memory additional?

.. .i would be happy to acquire more information in order to assist in answering this question, such as the version of VMWare. I have access to the guest OS.

    Thank you!

    mast

    You are absolutely right!

A machine is allocated virtual memory max during the creation and has no way for him to 'acquire' memory additional host at will. If it is a virtual machine running on an ESX Server, there are additional settings to configure. 'Réserve' is guaranteed physical RAM allocated to the VM when it is consumed on, 'Limit' is the physical RAM max, he can get the host and 'shares' will determine the relative priority of the virtual machine when there is a resource conflict. ESX uses several methods for memory management (transparent page sharing, hot air balloon and vmkernel swap) but memory configured virtual machine is the absolute maximum, he can use (unless changed by the admin)

    Hope this helps

Default password Machine virtual XP Mode

I've set up the virtual machine in win 7 Ultimate and put some data. Now when I try to connect it asks password and does not accept any password. Please giveme the default password

If you're talking about XP Mode the default password is XPMUser.  In general you can not use Windows without a password in Windows Virtual PC that you can with Virtual PC 2007 and before.  XPMUser is used only with the XP Mode virtual machine.  All other virtual machines requires a user created password.  If you have changed the password in XP Mode and forgotten, then you have to start over.

Windows Virtual PC is based on virtual server rather than VPC and all virtual machines need a password.  If necessary, uninstall the integration features, start the virtual machine and create a password for the admin user.  Restart the virtual machine, and then reinstall the integration features.  You will not be able to access a virtual machine created by the user that has no password, while the integration features are installed.  Once you have everything right, that a virtual machine will not be asked a password if you are the admin user in Windows 7.

  • How to connect 2 physical computers and 2 virtual machines?

    Hello!

This is my first time in the forum and I would like to ask about the network configuration for an installation of 2 physical machines and 2 virtual machines. Each physical computer has a virtual machine (all operating systems is Windows 7 or 8). I don't have a level of advanced network management, but I would like to ask how to resolve a case of example of this configuration? I was wondering for communication between machines and communication examining between 1 machine with the other 3.

Thanks in advance! If someone has already asked this, please tell me the reference.

    Welcome to the community,

VMware Player offers 3 configuration settings, bridged, NAT as well under the name Host-Only network. Host-Only can be used if the virtual machine does not require a connection with the exception of the other virtual machines and the host network. NAT is typically used if the virtual machine requires network access, but didn't need to be accessible to the outside. In your case, the possibility of using is connected by a bridge, which will connect seamlessly the virtual machine to the physical network.

  • ESX ESX and 64-bit virtual machines

    Hello

For a specific need, I virtualize ESX in ESX. It's something that I did before without a problem.

Today, I need to run a VM for 64 bit inside the virtual ESX (which runs on a physical ESX that you understood).

When I start the 64-bit VM, I get the following message:

Host CPU is not compatible with the virtual machine requires at level 0 x 80000001 CPUID register "edx".

    * Longmode; required when a virtual machine is configured for 64-bit guest OS
For systems with Intel processors, which allows to VT in the BIOS is required to support longmode.

Does anyone know how to enable VT on the VM to ESX from ESX VM BIOS is really basic, I can't find any option?

    Thank you

Nested ESX/ESXi hosts cannot run 32-bit VM... It is one of the limits very known execution of a nested host. Basically, the physical host is passing information to the virtual host that cannot transmit it (again) to the virtual machine running inside the nested host. You can send the info so far.

  • Internet access for virtual machines in Lab Manager

    Hello

Our lab environment is configured separately from corporate network and only some public IPs are able to access the internet. How I would install machinery in the Director of the laboratory to access the internet?

For example, IP range - 64.x.x.x. Creation of a network model with these IP addresses attached to physical networks and external public would give me access to the internet?

    Stan,

You would have to create a physical network that is attached to a vSwitch or Distributed Switch that can connect to this network of 64.x.x.x.

If configure you a Pool of IP, Lab Manager can manage physical network IP assignments to the virtual machines.  so if the virtual machines require Internet access, then they will need to access this network (somehow).

  • 7 - fusion '3D Acceleration requires an update of the VMware tools in the Virtual Machine'

    Hello

I installed the free Fusion 7 trial this week on my iMac and subsequently installed Windows 8.

The resolution of the screen under Windows is very low compared to the Mac OS.

In addition, I have the warning message in the Windows display settings:

'3D acceleration requires an update of the VMware tools in the Virtual Machine'

I also note that the display driver in Windows is the display driver database with Microsoft.

A few weeks ago I installed version 6 of Fusion and it worked very well.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you

    John.

Take a look at the installation and the use of the VMware tools and more spicifically to manually install or upgrade VMware Tools in a Windows Virtual Machine.

If by chance, VMware Fusion is not properly mounting image VMware Tools windows.iso file then you have to do it manually.  It is located in "/ Applications/VMware Fusion.app/Contents/Library/isoimages/windows.iso" and will have to be copied, not moved, in a location that is accessible out of the bundle of VMware Fusion.app as the office.  If you need to do this, you can right click on the bundle of VMware Fusion.app see the content of the selection box and access its location to copy.  To assign the windows.iso on the CD/DVD image, take a look at: Connect and Set Up a CD/DVD Drive

  • Software required to get the value of unused virtual machines

Almost 300 more virtual machines are running in my organization. Now, I need to identify the virtual machines that are not in use last period of one month so that I can approach the resources of concern against their virtual machines and get confirmation to remove these unused host machine virtual machines.

Help kindly pointed out what software can provide information required for the performance of house-keeping of the Virtual Infrastructure.

You could try vCenter Operations Manager (vCOPs).  Who has the ability to produce various reports including the integrated 'Idle Virtual Machines' that looks at the VM CPU: % idle time, disk i/o i/o idle time and % idle time network.

I guess it would be possible to do something with PowerCLi (Google can be your best friend with this well).

  • How to use a virtual machine that requires more physical memory that I have?

A colleague send me a Linux VM, he built on a machine with much more physical memory 4 GB I have in my Macbook Air.  When I started the virtual machine in Fusion, he said that the more physical memory virtual machine that I had and suggested that this would reduce the memory for the virtual machine to 3 GB.  I said OK and the machine started.  I did a lot of work in this virtual machine.  I suspended the VM because I needed to recover a portion of memory that he used for another application.

When I try to start the virtual machine now, it says that it requires 4 GB of memory and that I should quit some applications or restart to free the memory required.  I tried both without success.

Why the parameter / 3GB was not recorded when I suspended the VM?

Given that I can't change the memory required for the virtual machine until it is properly closed and since then I can't stop the virtual machine without unsuspending it, I suspect that the VM is toast.

Is it possible to recover the virtual machine?

With VMware Fusion closed, you can remove the file from .vmss to to reset the VM to a shutdown state.  Note that whatever it is not recorded when he was suspended will be lost.

  • Install ESX 2.5.5 - installs require licensing to allow power on virtual machines?

Install ESX 2.5.5 - installs require licensing to allow power on virtual machines?

I am part of an exercise in DR for ESX 2.5 installation. If ESX 2.5 requires serial numbers on install to allow power on virtual machines?

Or does the time where the vms turn on for the trial period?

The doc of admin ESX 2.5 says that he must have licenses in order to on the VMs.

Can the production ESX 2.5 serial numbers be used for the exercise of the DR, or is related to the material serial number. (I think it could be used).

    All points will be awarded.

    Thxs

VMware, even in the early days has provided a 60-day evaluation license - worth ESX 2.x and VC 1.x - the same limitations that apply today apply to the ESX 2.x, once that period eval runs out - you will not be able to on the VMs.

licenses are not related to the material. -.

  • Required physical server Vs Virtual Machine memory

Is there a white paper explains why we we need less memory in the Virtual Machine as compared to the physical Machine.

The problem is that my boss wants to know why this is so. It is very difficult for me to explain this to him, he wants to see a white paper OR some article on the internet.

As long as a VM administrator, I know that we can add and remove a virtual computer memory but it will be not that simple when it comes to physical servers. I suggested to him that we must follow a standard, and if there is a requirement for business we can increase or decrease is according to the needs. So when the salesman comes in they give us specifications for the physical server and not the virtual and there is always an argument that why should have 6-8 GB memory VM from the outset. In order to avoid everything that the arguments it needs more proof.

    Thank you

Here is a simple explanation of why VM need less memory.  Transparent page sharing.

If you install a virtual of Windows 2008 SP2 single server machine, lets assume that it uses 500 MB of RAM while sitting idle.  It's basically all running components loaded into memory.

If you then put a same VM, the new machine virtual don't re-charge not the exact same components in memory.  ESX will see the same exact memory block has been loaded into the memory of the host Server1 (phyiscal material) and then simply point the virtual machine to the component already loaded into memory.

After the virtual machine has been loaded and GST has kicked, you will probably find that for 2 identical virtual machines you use not only 650MB of memory (not 1000 as expected).  This is because 80% of the components has need of the new virtual machine, it only uses the existing memory blocks, instead of duplicating.

Now, repeat this operation on 10 VM and assume only 50% of the memory is the same between them... it is still a huge economy of memory.  In this case, since each VM Windows is really loading only 250 MB of itself in memory and split the rest, technically you don't need to allocate 2 GB of RAM for each virtual computer... you can easily get away with putting 1 to 1.5 GB on this server and I have always the same ratio of available memory for the programs that you would do if it was a physical server.
