You can do it, but you don't have to install cs3 in order to install your upgrade of cs5.5.
You can launch the installation of cs5.5 and you will be asked your cs5.5 serial number. Setup will ask you then select the product (in a drop-down list) calling. Select cs3 and you will be prompted for the serial number for cs3.
Enter the correct number at the right time and to proceed with the installation.
If you no longer need these programs on your old laptop, disable (help > deactivate) before uninstalling so that you can keep your two activations.

Need activation for CS5.5 Master Suite
I bought, installed and registered Adobe CS5.5 Master Suite two weeks ago. Since that time, I still face guests to activate more, that I was under the impression should happen automatically... ?
An alert "Cannot activate CS5.5 Master Collection" reading is followed by 3 options:-Repeat activation
-Contact customer support
-Remind me later
I tried and tried again to retry the activation. Each time, no matter where I am and what the internet server that I use, I'm constantly met "please connect to the internet, then press on continue.
Today, I tried to contact customer service. After being on hold for 45 MINUTES (!) not to mention once in a human being, I gave up rather unhappy.
I pressed on remind me later, day in and day out - but now my days are limited.
What should I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated because it seems that if the product is purchased and the money is in their hands, Adobe are impossible to contact. Certainly not the service that I expected.
Mac OS
- Open a Finder window. Choose go > go to folder.
- Type "/ etc" (make sure that you are signed in as an administrator).
- Select the hosts file and open it.
- Find all entries that refer to activate.adobe.com and remove them. For example, 127.0.0.1 activate.adobe.com and delete it.
- Save the file and close it.

Snowwhitebunny it's because Adobe Download Assistant does not have permission to download the installation files in your Applications folder. I'm surprised that you have not received an error message in Adobe Download Assistant himself. I recommend trying download again and this time by choosing your user folder or desktop. Once the download is complete the installation program launches automatically.

Uninstalling CS3 and install CS5.5 (Master Collection)
I bought CS 5.5 master collection so that I could use this CS3 master collection on another older machine. My question is this: what is the best way to uninstall CS3 Master collection on my current machine (Windows 7-64 bit) so I can then install new version full CS5.5 master collection? Also, should I be aware of as much as on the old settings of backup software? Just try to avoid headaches.
The only thing you need to worry is all "presets" that you have created yourself. So actions, swatches, brushes, etc. must be saved. Its best to uninstall before installing cs5 cs3 and not after, as this can cause problems with file associations.
If the second computer that your intend to put cs3 on is your only other computer, you should be able to use cs5 on it instead, that the license is supposed to be for the 2 systems, but only one can run at a time. To my knowledge, this license does consider the version number of the software. So if cs5 if on your new system and a laptop for example, do not put cs3 on a third computer because the license is for what I assume to be an upgrade.
If you have paid the full price, then the last paragraph is a moot point.

If you have only one installation enabled then you can avoid probably disable the one you currently have. You will receive a message about exceeding the activations if this has been a problem.
If the school has provided this software as a special offer you can check with them. In some cases, special offers are limited and the license does not last forever. If you paid the price full student then this is not the case.
