  If the laptop is one of the well known brands, he may well have a restore partition.  If you do not have a manual to the user of this computer, then go to the manufacturers website and look for the documentation.  At the very least, you should be able to find information about how to restore the laptop from the recovery partition.

  If the restore partition has been decimated, the manufacturer may still have available for a nominal cost of installation diskettes.

  You did not say what service pack you have installed, but I guess not SP3. Try to upgrade to SP3 and then try again.

  If you have Service Pack 1 has already been installed on your computer, you can go ahead and install Service pack 3

  Otherwise, you must download and install Service Pack 2.

  And later, you must install Service pack 3.

  Service pack 1 and service pack 2 Service pack 1 has joined in.

  IMO, one of the best tools that scan for malware that the virus is the free version of MalwareBytes AntiMalware.  https://www.Malwarebytes.org/DL-confirm/ . during installation, you will be asked if you want to a free trial of the Premium version.  Yet once, IMO, the Premium, even the free trial version, installation is not necessary.

  The difference between the free version and the Premium version, which is the last runs continuously in the background ("scheduled update and scanning, the safer our real-time Protection Module. ...   You need to go under the Help menu of Muse option to disconnect and then install it on the other computer you want using the creative cloud desktop application.
