If a disk was writable and rewritable, could it be a dvd rom drive or not?
Does not say the compact disc player or anything like that.
Hi Tesga,
Try to check by clicking on Start-> settings-> Control Panel-> system-> hardware-> Device Manager.
Under the CDC/CD ROM drive, you'll get your drive listed.
I hope this helps.

My DVD/CD drive does not work in Windows 8 Professional with or without data or audio in it. However, if I turn off the PC with a bootable CD/DVD in there, the PC recognize the media and initiate the CD when turned on. This confirms that the DVD/CD drive actually works, but for some stupid reason, Microsoft Windows 8 Professional will not recognize the same DVD/CD player it loaded since! Thanks again Microsoft for another product of shit. Now, how are you going to fix this? And how are we supposed to run things such as WordPad or paint, etc. I predict that Windows 8 will fall faster than Windows Me!

DVD-ROM drive works, but does not appear in 'Computer' and discs can be played
I totally messed up my DVD - ROM drive. After graduating the famous blue screen of death once yesterday and once today, I thought that my PC settings reset would fix the problem. Then, I pressed F2 when my computer starts and resets all settings. Unforunately, this is something serious to my DVD - ROM drive. Initially, it did not work, so I opened my computer and somehow got it works. But now, it does not detect the disks I insert in there. I get the message "no DVD - ROM drive found."
Anyone know if it's fixable? I hope I don't have to take my computer somewhere for repair. Unforunately, I don't know the make or model of the hard drive. My the PC features that I think are important are listed below.
I watch this thread, so if I'm on my PC I will be notified by email of responses.
Characteristics of the computer:
Model: Dell Dimension E520
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit)
Video card: ATI Radeon HD 2400 PROMessage edited by Jesant13 on 27/06/2008 20:47

Run the fixit for the following Microsoft Fixit and if it helps.
Your CD or DVD drive cannot read or write media:
http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us
Method 3:
Uninstall and reinstall the CD/DVD driver and check if it helps.
Follow the steps to uninstall and re-install the drivers.
a. click on start toreduce this includes this im and then click Control Panel.
b. click system and Maintenance, click Systemand then click on Device Manager.
Note If Control Panel is in Classic view, double-click System, and then click Device Manager.Reduce this includes this imageIf you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click allow.
c. in the Manager device, expand CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives, right click on CD and DVD devices and then click Uninstall.
d. When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click OK.

CD/DVD Rom drive - disk not detected when you try to play a movie or a cd.
I tried everything in the book according to what the technical support guy me to HP. Gave me a new optical drive. I made the purchase and asked the guy. How do I get the driver if it does not appear in my device manager? He said just to install the new optical drive, and it will download automatically. Yes, it was the most ridiculous thing. He did his best to convince me. Now, I received the new optical drive and even absurdity. It won't work. Try to get assistance and spend hours on the phone with them and no one can help me. Wow. Scam, scam, I don't really know what to call it.
