image-level backup solutions

What product did a good job to make a backup of virtual machines VMWare ESXi image without having to turn them off?

And what is the price range?

I am thinking to move away to make a traditional file backup to an image level to the top of the vmdk.

  • Is it possible to exclude some discs of the VCB image-level backups?

I have VCB with Backup Exec 12 running successfully.  Image and at the level of the backup files work as expected.  However, I have a server with a large data volume (more than one terabyte) that I would be able to exclude at the Image level backups, using only at the level of the files or any other means to back it up.  It's possible?  A thought I had was to configure the volume in physical rather than virtual compatibility mode.  Thoughts?  Recommendations?

    Thanks in advance.

A RAW device in mode physikal will not be saved in the VCB. I do it with our databases that reside on the RAW devices in the SAN, and I don't want that they are backed up with VCB. So, it is definitely possible.

  • What backup solutions/products are people using?

    Hello.

My company has been try VMWare, and the main question we ask ourselves is how best to implement a backup solution.

I would appreciate any feedback on what backup strategies are used there.

We have a dozen of OS instances in ESXi 3.5 running on an IBM 3550.

    Thank you!

You had a lot of different ways to perform backups with vmware:

    (1) traditional agent based just like what is used to safeguard physical servers

    (2)-level VMware backups using:

    (a) vmware itself (fact base backup + vi4 now)

    (b) VCB and manual encoding

    (c) VCB and any backup software that can exploit VCB / who is aware of vmware

    (d) 3rd-party vendors who use the hypervisor like vizioncore, veeam, avamar, etc..

    (3) at the level of the storage of backups based on snapshots and replication

All those who have costs, benefits, caviats and requirements that would take too long to go in...

A few things to think about are:

-Sleep/MVS: will be your VMS coherent consistent application-level or crash?

-Restoring files: do you need to be able to restore individual files and objects in the Pack in a virtual machine?

-Speed: How fast can you save things and what is the impact for the steps?

-ESXi support: the backup method supports ESXi? (some don't)

-Software support: how long does take to get through to support if you have a problem?

Looks like you're most likely in the stage of buying a veeam and vizioncore solution if you try only things like those will be cheap and easy to implement.

    Good luck!

  • Network disk backup solution

Hi, I am looking to resolve a dilemma with a backup solution. I have an external hard drive connected to an Airport extreme. It is used for my iTunes music library. Is there a way or a backup software that allows me to save this drive to another external hard drive directly connected to my Mac? Preferably, I'd like something with planning, or at least to be able to synchronize both by car.

Any help you have is appreciated.

The airport gets only a usb port?

I don't think it's possible, I've never used an extreme, as its too limited for the port forwarding and QoS Type...

I have a NAS that is the central location of all my stuff and are accessible to any device. same iOS/Windows and PC if necessary... more 2 external backups that I keep synchronized manually...

Airport Extreme had only one port, so I guess I have to copy the others manually. or get a NAS and run backup on this software with RAID 1 or more...

  • Online backup solution for Mac files?

I'm All in with the Apple ecosystem.  I have iCloud, which shows how to save my photos (most important).  But now, what of my files?  So far, I was backup on external hard drive using Time Machine.  But I prefer that my backup not to be on a device that could burn (or other) being sometimes advanced with my MacBook Pro.

I know there are services such as Carbonite, but I would be everything-Apple if possible.  I know I can drag files on my iCloud drive, but this isn't a real backup solution.

Any advice?  Thanks for any help.

You must decide if you want to save your programs or just files - I personally backup files since all my programs can be downloaded or resettled

  • after image restore, backup partition table is different

    Hello

He is a 2012 Macbook mid Pro with El Capitan and Bootcamp.

After repeated with Bootcamp (Windows 10 Pro) problems I started using Image of Terabyte for Linux in order to safeguard this Macbook. Forums terabyte that people know that the Image of Linux (such as Image for Windows) is able to create a reliable backup, but also to restore - restore an entire disk image or restoring individual partitions.

I followed their instructions precisely and activated the two options "restore first Beach" and "TPG hidden OS" (as one terabyte official, Member of the forum wrote) when restoring a partition.

Unfortunately, it did not work! Bootcamp was no longer visible in the start screen or wasn't visible, but not start.

What I found was that I had to keep the two options (see above) with DISABILITIES.

Then I could restore some partition images - and 10 Windows in Bootcamp is bootable.

Well, it was the long introduction.  I'm sorry.

    Now my question is:

Is this something that has changed my partition table?

Before restoring an Image for backup of Linux for the first time, I had this partition table:

    localhost: ~ root # fdisk/dev/disk0

    Disk: geometry / dev/disk0: 60801/255/63 [976773168 sectors]

    Signature: 0xAA55

    From end

    * 04:07 1023 254 63-1023 254 63 [859586560-117186560] HPFS/QNX / TO THE

    BUT:

After failed attempts to restore and work finally restore my partition table operation is different:

    Fdisk/dev/disk0

    Disk: geometry / dev/disk0: 60801/255/63 [976773168 sectors]

    Signature: 0xAA55

    From end

    * 04:07 1023 199 8-1023 255 63 [859586560-117186560] HPFS/QNX / TO THE

Everything seems to work fine, but I wonder if the different appearance of the partition table can be a problem?

    For example, compare:

    1: EA 1023 254 63 - 1023 254 63] 3 o 409639]

    TO

    1: EA 0 0 2 - 1023 255 [63 3 o

    409639]

It's the output of 'diskutil list ':

localhost: ~ root # diskutil list

In Fdisk, the CHS numbers are arbitrary on modern disks. They are the time of BIOS and old disks with CHS geometry. Puts BCA from Mac 0-1023 (1024 cylinders), 0-255 (256 heads) and 0-63 (64 sectors). Modern disks far exceed those numbers and would drain them. Must match what is the triplet of start/end/size and it fits in GPT and MBR. You can put arbitrary 0,0,0 for CHS and you will see all issues on GPT disks.

  • Beyond Amazon S3 Iomega ix2 and Mozy backup solutions

    Hello

I see that Mozy is now discontinued in the Iomega ix2 NAS. I can't use Amazon S3 for philosophical reasons. Are there other available for off-site backup solutions? I tried to learn more about EMC Atmos, but I can't find a service provider that I can understand. I am very discouraged and I think that all the support has been ignored for this porduct.

    Hi berry582,

Mozy, Amazon and Atmos are only available for the ix2 backup programs. You can download the app Atmos here: http://www.lifelineapps.com/

What other questions do you have about Atmos?

  • I need a suggestion on the backup solution

    Hello

I'm looking for a backup solution can restore Virtual Machine or data inside (MySQL database, files, etc...). I found Veeam but I don't know how to restore data inside the virtual machine. It is not possible to back up and restore for database services and I think that they do not have this function.

Please, can someone suggest me a good brand name of solution?

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the community,

Veeam is certainly something to consider. It offers various options to restore whole VMs, guest operating system files and even objects.

For SQL, see for example https://www.veeam.com/blog/how-to-restore-a-sql-server-database.html

  • EBS R12.1.3 "Incremental Clone" as a backup Solution?

    Hi Hussein.

I worked on a backup solution for Oracle EBS, which can be used in disaster (complete server failure). That's what I came with:

Week 1: complete Clone of the Oracle E-Business Suite R12.1.3 environment. The copied files are sent to another server (the target system is NOT configured).

Week 2: I stop the AppsTier source and DbTier and copy them over the other server using the rsync command to synchronize all changes (database and application). It is a crash.

So where we physically lose the Production Server, I can always restore the clone on a new server.

We can afford 1 week of data loss (users will need to re-enter the data).

Week 3: same as week 2.

This could work as a recovery after disaster? (The rsync command really will synchronize the content of the databases data blocks?)

    Thank you, Hussein.

    Hi Clamarion,

Your approach should work too long that your database is shut down cleanly before using rsync. Since you are using rsync and overwrite the data files, your destination files will be in sync with the source ones.

Outside rsync, you could use RMAN incremental backup database or EU data guard (which requires an additional license). If you are open to these options and you have any questions feel free to post here.

    Thank you

  • CBT and migration of the backup solution

    Hello

I have a question about cbt and backup.

    Consider the following example:

I backup my VM with a backup solution using cbt (for example with Netbackup). I have change my backup solution to backup my virtual machines (for example with Veeam).

I have reset cut before the backup my virtual machines with my new backup solution or not?

Indeed, I am a bit paranoid about cbt...

Thank you in advance for your help!

    Sébastien

CBT adjustment is not necessary in this case, because both solutions use CBT features independently without affecting the other.

    See you soon.

  • Re: Backup solution for vC Ops

    Hello guys,.

I'm looking for a backup solution for the vcops. My scenario is that we have a vcops 5.0.3 with 2.4 to split between three LUNS. What are the possibilities of the back upward. If I take a snapshot how it would consume about?

If I move the vcops on SAN NAS, I guess we don't have any problems with the backup or instant? But in the company vcops in the section guide backup as I saw that the vcops does not work on NAS file systems. What some true thing?

You can use VCB for free, but it is "just backup, nothing more" and base command line.

Veeam Backup offers features very good, but a bit expensive.

I'm looking for in an Enterprise Backup Solution that will allow me to save guest restoration VM encapsulated the encapsulated Vm Guest and let restores individual files.  What are the current solutions and Vmware or anyone else who is dating a good solution in the near future? The size of the environment has 250 hosts with approximately 15-25 comments on each host.  Current solution is using Netbackup with agents inside the guests.

I looked vRanger Pro connection but have some questions about this.  Is - this Enterprise Class to support the environment size above?  And for those that use for a large environment how this unloading is workload?  A small box of vRanger connection can't handle the backup of 5000 guests.  After reading the documentation that it sounded like he pushes the backup processing to the source host ESX virtual machine hosting is that correct?  I can then make a fiber optic connection or connection nfs for a camera of deduplication of data on other ESX host in the Cluster and say the task of using these connections on the ESX hosts to transmit the backup on the destination device to store the archive.  Is this correct?
