  After resetting my modem 100 times (from support) re - install windows xp, buy a new card NETWORK, I always get the same error message when I do an ipconfig/flushdns, ipconfig/release and then an ipconfig / renew: "an error occurred during renewal of the connection to the Local network interface: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request timed out. "I am currently plugged into my laptop (which works very well, win7) but as soon as I have the plugin on my desk (before I do a complete factory reset of the modem) I get no internet activity. There is no router in question, just a modem (RCA, model: DCM 425).  I've been through 20 different blogs and I can't understand what the problem is.

  I was running XP SP3 until I reformatted. I'm currently under SP1. I disabled my motherboards NIC and plugged in the new. Still get the same results as I was before I reformatted. As I said, the laptop works very well. When I got the modem it was connected to my desktop computer with limited connectivity or not. As soon as I plugged into my laptop, it is up in a few seconds. Any ideas?

  Make sure that your DHCP Client service is running...
  Start the Services (start-> Run-> "services.msc") window, then look for a line called "DHCP Client".  Make sure that the status column is "Started" and Startup Type column is "automatic".  If not, double-click this line and do it this way.

When I do ipconfig I see that there is no IP address.
  I took the computer to Starbucks this morning, ran ipconfig / renew and she acquired the IP address and I was able to connect to the Internet. I brought the computer home and tried and failed to connect. The IP address is back to 0.0.0.0 and the error message appears when I try to renew it.

  Thank you all for responding.  I tried all the software solutions that I know and it was recommended to try.  Nothing.  I have only that it is a hardware problem.  I'll install a new Ethernet card and see what happens.
