  Thank you very much for your answers. As you suggest, I went to the help/updates and found that 3 points were scored update, Manager, 13 Photoshop and first elements 13 elements. On a hunch, instead uncheck one of them, I thought I'd see what would happen to let update all 3. It took a while, but, long story short, stopped the happy Vangogh and everything seems fine.   (a) update you are trying to install? (It would be better, if you can provide the number of KB)

  (b) are the other updates related to Windows from installing on your computer?

  I suggest you try the following steps:

  Step 1: Disable the software security and then try to install the update

  Note: Activate security software once the test is completed.

  Step 2: Download and install the update in the clean boot state

  To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows Vista, follow these steps.

  1. click on start, type msconfig in the search box and press ENTER.

  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on continue.

  2. in the general tab, click Selective startup.

  3. under Selective startup, clear the check box load startup items.

  4. click on the Services tab, select the hide all Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable all.

  5. click on OK.

  6. When you are prompted, click on restart.

  After starting the computer, download the update manually and try to install it.

We are here on the Toshiba forum and write about Toshiba, but there is not much difference if you check the other laptop manufacturers.

  Optimization of the operating system is not so complicated and in 30 minutes, you can have perfect OS pre-installed (the recovery image optimization). Okay, your decision was clean installation of the OS. It's OK, but you know very well you have to install a lot of drivers and Toshiba specific stuff in addition one by one and this must be done in the proper installation order.

  In general I think you didn't raise enough information on your new machine. In s manuals you will find a description of each tool of Toshiba and utility with exact explanation that you can do with it.
  On the one hand you want to have only necessary things, but later complain of missing features. Problem is that buttons face, utility eco, remote control, webcam and all other hardware components are controlled with different Toshiba tools and utilities so they must be active in the background and it's certainly not useless.
  I put t know what else to say.
  I just hope that you created the recovery DVDs until you started the clean install of the OS.

  If you have made the decision to return to your laptop back any further discussion will probably not help you much.

  What is happening in Mode safe? If you can install it in Mode safe mode then delete all entries in startup via msconfig as this could conflict with the program.

  If this does not work, saving all the data of your administrator account, you can delete the account and recreate it.
