Inspiron (7720) Boot from mSATA Instructions

Bought a special edition of the Inspiron 17R (7720) this week to replace my old Inspiron 5100 beloved who died last Thursday after nine years of being the best computer I've ever owned.  Has decided to pass the 32GB mSATA chip to a 128 GB and use it as OS disk, reserving the disk of 1 TB of storage as only linking the mSATA is much faster to use it as a cache for the tray.

As has been discussed on dozens of threads (here and elsewhere) that I read today, the Dell BIOS doesn't recognize the mSATA as bootable, or from UEFI or legacy.  Then, mounting on the dead ends that I came down, here's what I have to operate:

1 acquire new mSATA drive.  Mine is a Crucial 128 GB m4.  (I don't know whether or not the rest of it would be to work with the Council of 32 GB by default, but 32 GB is terribly low for a modern OS.)

2. acquire a Windows 8 installation DVD.  (Dell does not include it with the package is the only complaint I have about my purchase.  OS install media should ALWAYS be included with an OEM PC.  A-l-w-a-y-s.)

3 turn the laptop, remove the battery, remove the cover from the bottom (only 2 screws, well made, Dell).  Now, remove the 1 TB HARD drive (4 screws, but slides easily) and set it aside.  Then replace the 32 GB mSATA drive existing with your new, bigger mSATA player (1 screw).  I have a 128 GB, but it should work as well with a 64 or 256 GB.  Replace the cover and the battery.  At this point, both the regular SATA slots must be empty.

4. start the PC, press F2 to go to the BIOS.  Insert your Windows 8 (or 7, it should work with Windows 7 as well) DVD.  Go to 'Advanced' and set operations the Intel Smart Response on AHCI SATA.  Go to 'Start', set up Secure Boot to disabled.  Then set the load run Legacy Option to "Enabled".

5. move the CD/DVD/CD-RW-above hard drive under the new start menu in the legacy.  Press F10 to save and exit.

6. your PC should now start from the Windows 8 DVD in the drive (NOTE: you should also be able to do this with a USB key, if it is properly formatted).  Follow the on-screen installation process to install Windows 8 on the mSATA disc.  Once installation is complete, you should be on the Windows desktop.  Shut down the PC.  (NOTE: I tried with the HARD drive that is still inside, but it was disk 0 and the SSD was disk 1 it would install only my DVD of Windows disk 0, so I highly recommend you to remove the HARD drive before you try to install Windows on the mSATA SSD.)

7. once more, remove the battery and the back.  Replace the 1 TB HARD disk drive in the primary SATA slot where you removed in step 3.  Replace the back cover and the battery.

8. start the PC from your DVD of Windows 8 again.  On the partition of Windows 8 configuration screen, delete all existing partitions (it's like six of them) on disk 0 (the 1 TB of HARD drive).  Install Windows on the disk newly empty.  You should see him also, as disk 1, your mSATA SSD, ignore it for now.

9. the PC will reboot, and you should leave it to an office of current Windows to run on the HARD drive.  Go to computer (just type in the search option on the "charms" on the right side of the screen in Windows 8), you will see three disks, the one you are on, the system recover the mSATA SSD disk and the first partition on the mSATA SSD.  Note the drive letter of the primary partition on the SSD.  Mine was E:\, but yours may be different.  You can verify that it is the right due to the amount of available disk space.

10. download an install EasyBCD:

http://www.Softpedia.com/get/system/OS-enhancements/EasyBCD.shtml

11. start EasyBSD.  Click the "add a new entry".  Set name "SSD" or something similar, and set the primary partition on your SSD drive.  (Again, mine was E:\.)  Click Add entry.

12. on the left side of EasyBSD, click on modify Boot Menu.  You should see two entries, one for 'Windows 8' or something similar to "SSD" (or whatever you named in step 11)  Delete the one that says 'Windows 8' so that the only entry is the one that you just created, "SSD" in this example.  Save the settings.

13 eject the DVD from your PC Windows 8.

14 restart.  (If you wish, you can push F2 to return to the BIOS and HDD on the CD/DVD/CD-RW-drive in the boot order of inheritance).

15. your PC should now boot directly to the installation of Windows 8 on your mSATA SSD.  To check this, turn on computer, you should see three disks, your C:\ drive With 100 GB or so free OS (on a 128 GB drive), a "System Reserved" disk (350 MB HARD disk) and the much larger primary partition (also on the HARD drive).  You can go to control panel | System and security | Administrative Tools | Computer management | Disk management and delete the primary partition on the HARD drive.  (Always best to let the system reserved alone, especially because it is paltry 350 MB.)  Once the primary partition is deleted, you can use the rest of this spacious 1 TB drive for what you want.

That's all.  You now have only one copy of Windows running on your player mSATA that your PC will start automatically and the main HDD for storage.

SUMMARY: Yes, this process involves installing Windows twice, firstly on the mSATA drive, then back to the HARD disk.  But since the Dell BIOS will not show the mSATA drive in the boot order, you must partition on the HARD disk to tell the computer to boot from the mSATA SSD.  With EasyBSD, it is just a few clicks to tell the boot record on the HARD disk (which does not appear in the BIOS boot options) at the start of the mSATA SSD (who does not appear in the BIOS boot options).

NOTE: I don't know if it will be an optimal procedure for speed, security or anything else.  I know that it will work.  If you want a clean, without installing bloatware Running Windows 8 off the mSATA drive on this laptop model, the above should do it for you.

Yes Im so happy it worked, I put in a 128 GB Plextor M5M in the msata, quick blazzing it hits 500, but as Sata II is capped, my SSD is maxed out at HDTach, then in Bay 1 I a new HGST Hitachi 1 TB sata iii travelstar 7200 RPM drive I had for 69.99 and in Bay 2 original 5400 RPM drive , I'll probably be being sold and put into another HGST, these are fast and great energy saving. Then I advanced and got 16 gb (8gbx2) of 1600 patriot signature ddr memory. Its the 3d version with the blu ray drive, at the end, the stats are sick

3630QM-i7 Quad Core

17 "1920 x 1080 3D with screen TruLife

16 GB RAM DDR3

Nvidia GT 650 M video card

1xmsata 128 GB

2xSATA III 1 TB hard drives

I mean shit, 2 TB, 16 GB of ram, and it can play most of the games graphics high? and you can watch 3d blu ray movies and playing 3d games? I'm rocking, hell Yes rules Dell! got a lot on this laptop too

None of this is really a problem Windows/Microsoft.

A1: Ask Dell and/or consult the specifications of Dell web/FAQ pages.

A2: The BIOS is not related to the operating system you have.  Turn off the computer, turn on the computer and immediately start typing F2.

    A3: Eventually--depends on the answer to Q1.

  • Cannot configure the Laptop Inspiron 15 5559 to boot from the DVD drive

I have a new laptop Inspiron 15 5559 .  There seems to be no way to configure the BIOS to boot from a repair disc to win 10.  After an accident on my old laptop, I know how it is important to be able to restore a disk image of my external backup.

Help please because I do not see how to get the player optical, listed in the boot order.  It doesn't seem to be any mention of it.

the bios is probably corrupted also not hostile user. try Googling a tutorial of bios dell for the setting of parameters for 5559. Lucky, you're not going to find one. It's not even a decent manual. the user must download the recovery files that must be installed on the hard drive before l/p of the plant leaves. the Bios is archaic and most of the time does not meet the evolution of the legacy in the uefi. you could try to update the bios, but I doubt that you will succeed even after doin so. call the tech and have them try. I did and they screwed up my 5559 and they had me reinstall the recovery of a usb drive, they sent. It helps took 5 hours to install. then another 3 hours of updates. and the 5559 still does not work properly. Maybe I got a lemon. However the subject requested, and every time I called dell every question I asked I was put on hold. what say you. He offered dell technicians, although very courteous do not know and don't have to put you on hold the Conference with other technicians or find which could help. Sorry to be critical but after over the hours on the phone most of the time on hold dell tech dept is not up to snuff.

  • Boot from USB device on Inspiron 5520

    Hey guys,.

I got a new Inspiron 15R 5520. The problem is that I can't start the laptop from a USB key like I did on N5040 (my 2 year old laptop), and there is no option to do this. First of all, I hit "F2" to enter the BIOS Setup page, there are only 3 options under the boot device: hard drive, CD/DVD, network. I restart the computer and press "F12" to select the boot device, still no USB.

Dell freeze function to boot from USB device? Is there a solution? Thanks in advance.

    Hi SimonJia,

This system is designed so that it doesn't have an option to boot from USB.

    Just reply to other questions.

  • Pre-seed evaluation error 2000-0332, Inspiron 7720

I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 7720. A few days ago, I have a suggestion of a Dell program to update my BIOS, which I have allowed. Update didn't seem to bring up all additional windows or a progress bar to let me know how would the update, but I don't think too much of it and let the computer do its thing.

In general I just leave my laptop on nonstop and put to sleep when not in use (I remember reading somewhere on the departure of the user of Windows 8 guide just let it sleep instead of turning it off). Yesterday, I went home for Thanksgiving so that my laptop was in mode 'sleep'. When I tried to turn on my laptop, I noticed that it was no longer in fashion 'sleep' and had put off instead. Not much, I thought, but when I turned it on, I got an error screen in the sense of

PXE-# Media test failure, check cable of

    PXE-#: exit Intel PXE ROM

I found myself at the start screen, which allowed me to run the diagnostics. I left running and came across 2000-0332 error code in the form of assessment of pre-boot, who told me that something was wrong with my memory of the video card (abnormality of the video memory integrity test). After a bit of research on this code, it may have something to do with my BIOS and I should try for the flash. However, I wasn't able to do it through USB (I get the error "invalid or damaged bootable partition" when I leave the USB key in start) nor the CD (does not seem to the .exe on the CD is detected).

I tried to get to the BIOS screen by pressing F2 at Dell logo but I always end up on the same screen which lists me my legacy startup options (I don't get the screens of typical BIOS that allows me to change my default settings, boot order, etc.). The choices listed are removable disk, CD/DVD/CD-RW drive, second disk and network. By pressing F12 does the same thing. I noticed that the hard drive is not listed so I though that maybe something was wrong with my HD, but the evaluation shows that it works very well.

I'm really in ideas on what to do. If worst comes to worst, I can try to exchange it for another since I'm still in the trading period, but I prefer to keep my laptop current and its information.

    Hi Andresmou,

I'm sorry for the experience. As the error is related to the video memory, I suggest to install (flash) the latest BIOS and run diagnostic tests. You can download the latest version of the BIOS from the following link by drilling in the Service tag and click on the "Drivers & downloads" tab:
    http://Dell.to/117d6Zu

Please let me know the results of the test.

  • Try to reinstall Windows 7 on an Inspiron 7720 - "OS not found" error

    Hello

Then; I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 7720 with a reformatted hard drive and I need to reinstall windows 7. I do not have the original relocation provided with this exact laptop DVD but I don't have any Dell laptop to another (a Studio 1558) and another disc of Windows 7 from a desktop computer (drives and OS that was on the laptop before the failure of HARD drive are all Windows 7 Home Premium 64 - Bit). When I turn on the laptop with a drive and hit F12 and then select ' CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive' in the boot options screen displays "Operating system not found" immediately and remains on the screen until you restart.

I perform a full diagnostic check and everything going on, I made sure the CD - RW drive is no. 1 in boot priority (not imagine that questions if I manually select it). The HARD drive and CD - RW drive are detectable in the BIOS too... I have no idea what the problem is, any help will be greatly appreciated!

    Many thanks in advance,

Looks like the optical drive may be defective... You must try the new installation via the USB port. At this point, I would recommend arm SecureBoot and UEFI. Clean then install Windows 10 RS1:

  • (Inspiron 7720) Cannot be started on the installation of Windows 8 media in UEFI

    Hello

I just got a Dell's Inspiron 7720 (computers laptops 17 ") running on Windows 8. As usual, I want to reinstall Windows 8 myself to ensure that I have a clean install (and to be sure, I'll be able to do if I change my HARD drive). I want to do in UEFI mode and not in Legacy mode.

    • I tried to boot on Dell Windows 8 DVD (requested by phone, IE 8 64-bit Windows) by pressing F12 at startup: the only options are "Windows Boot Manager" and "Network Boot. No way to boot to DVD, Windows starts automatically.

I went in the "Bios" by pressing F2 at startup (Startup tab):

    • I tried to disable "Secure Boot": no result, kept this option disabled.
    • I activated the Option Rom legacy: a new menu "Legacy Boot: ' allows me to start on the drive of DVD, but housing starts of start-up Mode Legacy, which is not allow me to install Windows 8: the installer says my partition table is GPT, so I can't select any partition on my discs to install the OS.
    • I tried to add a boot option with the name of the Boot Option as ' CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive': is in the list of system files "PciRoot (0x0) / Pci (0x1F, 0 x 2) /Sata (0x3, 0x0, 0x0) /CD" or 2 entries like "PciRoot (0x0) / Pci (0x1F, 0 x 2) /Sata (0x3, 0x0, 0x0) /HD'." ""» I tried all. I left the "File name" line empty. No results: the CD begins to spin at the start and then the operating system starts 2 seconds later. I tried repeatedly pressing "Enter" immediately after the choice of my new boot entry in F12 menu, same results.
    • I tried everything above with the operating system on a USB stick (formatted to Fat32 using this http://www.servethehome.com/uefi-bootable-usb-drive-windows-8-windows-server-2012/), no result. The light on the USB is indicating activity for 2 seconds, then turns off when Windows starts.
    • I tried to start my DVD and my USB on a new Inspiron 660 (office): a line is automatically added in the F12 boot menu and I can start on the DVD or USB in UEFI mode (and I can reinstall Windows), so my devices seem not to be the problem.
I spent two hours on the phone with a Dell technician, and he was not able to solve my problem.
It seems to me that Dell has not even attempted to check whether their own DVD of Installation OS works on their computer
I think I need to write something in the "File name" box when you add a new Boot Option. But why? I forgot something?
Thank you in advance for the time you spent reading this.

OK I solved the problem. It's very simple, but obviously the bios needs an update: the one-time boot menu (the one launched by pressing F12 at startup) does not work in the UEFI.

So, how to start on the DVD in UEFI mode:

    • Insert the DVD into the drive
    • Start your computer by pressing F2 to enter the Bios
    • Go to the Startup tab
    • Add a boot option with the name of the Boot Option as ' CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive' and check that the 'CD' in the end enabled, as "PciRoot (0x0) / Pci (0x1F, 0 x 2) /Sata (0x3, 0x0, 0x0) /CD'." Let the empty file name entry.
    • Put the new entry before 'Starting Windows Management' in the UEFI Boot section.
    • Save and restart.
    • When asked, press a key to boot from the DVD. DO NOT USE one-time F12 BOOT MENU: by SELECTING ' CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive' will NOT WORK.
When Windows is reinstalled correctly, just change the new boot order or delete the boot entry you created before. Never use the single start menu unless you want to start in Legacy mode (it works).
I can't believe I lost so much time on this... I hope this will help.
  • Dell Inspiron 15R SE 7520 - mSATA connection?

Hello. I have an Inspiron 15R SE here (see code evaluates DNDOM12S.) I understand that there is an internal SATA 2 drive of 1 TB 5400 RPM. The links on the General page to reviews that mention the mSATA 32g so I did not know that the system is apparently came with a disc with an mSATA petition, but is no longer made.

I would like to install a SSD as I have an insane amount of space NAS.  I would like to know:

If I get an mSATA system drive I mentioned above will have the correct daughter card / port to install?

If Yes, I a SATA 3 SSD for faster transfer speeds?

If not, what is the reference number of the daughter card I need to order and install to use player mSATA?

Wouldn't make more sense to get a shopping cart for the optical drive and install an SSD there? Is it also a SATA 2 connection or a SATA 3 drive will work in the optical Bay?

I also thought that I read somewhere that the BIOS cannot be set to boot from the optical drive caddy? Is this true?

    Thanks in advance

If you order the system with a disk mSATA, the girl will not be in the system.  You need one depends on what model you have - 15R refers to one of several models - 5520, 5521, etc..  You need to find your model number (on the screen of the BIOS, F2 on startup) to find the right part.

The new model SE 15R will be training mSATA 6G;  most are 3G.

It is true that you cannot start a drive mounted in an optical bay adapter.

  • Desktop HP ENVY 700: problems with the boot from usb in the bios

Hi I'm trying to boot from usb on a desktop HP ENVY 700. I don't know the serial number now.

I followed the instructions and have produced a bootable USB and I checked this on a work dell computer where there is an option for me to boot from my USB if I so wish, but on my HP ENVY any options choose it does not appear with my USB in question and when I try to change the boot sequence making sure the usb/floppy and drive hard usb is above the rest of the sequencers starting it always starts just to the top as usual to my windows boot 10. I've disabled secure boot and used the boot of the legacy and it still does not work.

I went through all the options I can that seem to be logic and it just does not work. I don't understand and I have to start using a usb key that I use the operating system can be very dangerous in a real environment, so it can not be downloaded to the hard drive.

I need immediate help, this becomes quite frustrating now that it should be simple to do, but HP is not the way to simplisitic to do.

Please if someone could point me in the right direction I would be so appreciative ideally if I could have a ride on the way to do

I need this to work because I can't afford to buy new systems and its for my studies so its imperative

Your PC has a motherboard of Memphis and happens to have a UEFI BIOS and the hard drive of the GPT format.

You can check the type of hard disk online order volume by using the DiskPart utility.

Create a flashdrive bootable UEFI with RUFUS.

    https://Rufus.AKEO.IE/

Plug it into an available usb port before you press the power button. Near the powr button and immediately start to tap the F9 key to enter the boot from the sources menu. Select the Flash drive under the UEFI Boot sources. Let the boot process. If you have created the key correctly, it should start.

    Hello!

I have a big problem, I have recently purchased a 2nd hand Tecra M2 and now I can't boot from the CD. I had with installed "Windows XP Home Edition". Because it was full of craps (slow, full of pictures, documents... etc.) I wiped them immediately. To be more precise I reinstalled Windows XP. However! I do not have a restore CD with my laptop, so I used a CD of win we have at the office.

To boot from the CD, I scored just good thing in 'Start' > 'Toshiba' > 'Tools' > 'control center (or something similar). However! There is no such thing now here!

I don't know what to do. I downloaded all the drivers on the web, I installed it, but I don't know why I don't have this ability to change the boot device...

I'm used to Linux (pants on the desktop) and I wanted to try it on my laptop, that's why I posted this message here.

    Help, please!

    Concerning
    Tom

Sorry for my English, I'm not native.

Sorry for my question but what you are looking for?
You want to boot from the CD/DVD drive? If Yes, why you n t change the order of boot in the BIOS?
You can also boot from the disc by pressing the C key immediately after starting the laptop.

Ps: If you want to have an OS that works without any problem, you must install the drivers of Toshiba in the right order.
Now you ask-> how the hell is a good order?

On the Toshiba driver page I found an installation instruction. Just follow this guide line

  • No boot from CD - how to check if there is a BIOS problem?

I have search in the forum and almost everything it has been proposed to solve the problem but have not yet checked.

I have a Toshiba Staellite m40 - 230 SP and there are a few days, I was forced to change my CD/DVD drive, because the original one doesn't work anymore. (As a recommendation of the shop after having shown my last drive), I bought a Sony AD - 7580A ID. I inserted into the laptop and tested several times in Windows O.S. with no problem at all.

The problem appeared when you try to start on a CD in order to update the OS it is not possible to boot from any CD or DVD!

That's all what I already checked:
Bq. - CD player tested within the bone several times while reading and recording media. It worked correctly. \\-Change the order of precedence of the BIOS to check first the CD-ROM. Did not work. \\-Essaye also by pressing 'C' or F12 at startup to force to check the CD. Did not work. \\-Verifie that when you start, the laptop seems to try to check if there is a CD in the drive (we see a green light and the sound of verification), but in the end behaves as if there were not a CD inside or it is not bootable. \\-UN of the tested CD was a Linux distribution downloaded from its homepage and verified through MD5 and properly followed the instructions for registration (and checked in an another lapto when there was no problem) \\-essaye several other CD/DVD that have been tested in other PC where they made the system startup from the CD correctly. None of these disc worked in my laptop. Tried \\-j'ai as original Toshiba Recovery DVD and it did not work \\-essaye F8 to end somewhere in the force to check the CD. Nothing there. \\-Change CD player with another one (an LG) that works fine in another laptop. But not in mine. \\-Retire the HARD drive and tried to boot from the CD to detect if there is a confusion between them to the point of BIOS that detect both as primary IDE. It did not work. BIOS \\-configuration modified by default with the priority of the sequence set to CD-ROM first. I am of ideas right now and don't know what else to check. Could you please help me? any idea?
I have the bios on this laptop is really simple and there is no place where I can check if it is to recognize the new CD player.

At first, I have to say that I m not a technician and cannot say for sure what the problem is here but I have a few suspicions about all of this.
As you know laptop manufacturers use only compatible hardware components and test the functionality of the laptop computer in general.
For each laptop model Toshiba offer a list with compatible optical disc players that can and should be used on some laptop model. This list is in document s user manuals.

According to this document, you can use follow the sides:
    Toshiba - Samsung SD-C2712
    -Matsu * a UJDA760
    -Toshiba Samsung TS-L462A
    -TEAC DW-224TH
    -Pioneer DVR-K15TBT
    -Toshiba Samsung TS-L632A
    -Matsu * a UJ - 830B
    -Matsu * a UJ-831BT-A
    TEAC - W28E-xxx

As you can see that this Sony isn't on the list and I guess that there must be a compatibility problem.
All listed optical disc drives are tested and will work as a boot device.

  • C850-1See satellite and win 8 - need to boot from CD

    Hello
I need to start from a CD on my 1See C850 which came with pre-installed win8.
F12 is not made at boot time. I understand that it is because of the UEFI.
To boot from a CD, what should I do (change to legacy boot?). If so, how to return to the UEFI (Win8 will not start if the startup mode is set to legacy).

    Hello

What you do is first of all to a complete stop.
After this start your laptop, then press F12 to get into the boot menu. There is option Enter Setup. Select this option and enter the BIOS settings.

After that follow the instructions on http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2B03F30002R01.htm and http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2C03F80002R01.htm
