Interested in XPS 15

HI - I am interested in buying an XPS 15, but I am concerned about wireless connectivity. I read a lot of posts on the problems with this and can't find a definitive conclusion, that the problems have been resolved.

Can anyone help or point to an official statement from Dell, which confirms that the problem has been identified and resolved?

I don't really want to receive a new brilliant XPS and then spend hours on the phone to technical support and the back / replace the cycle.

Thank you.

Hi Gerrard_B,

Thanks for posting on the Forum.  I'm not aware of any recent issues involving wireless connectivity, while this may have been a problem in the past, it seems that they have been addressed and resolved.

Kind regards
Robert

  • XPS One A2420 64-bit driver

I have an A2420 a XPS with Nvidia GeForce 9600 M GT. I tried to install Vista and Windows 7 64 - bit Os on this machine. The only problem I have is the video driver for the Nvidia card. I tried the Nvidia 64 bit driver for this card from Nvidia, but I get the error "cannot install due to hardware not recognized." Microsoft update downloads as a 64-bit driver and it installs. The problem is that in Windows 7, the video screen goes black every two minutes and a message appears saying that the card was insensitive and the operating system is healed. In addition, the mouse is erratic. This became very aggravating since I contacted the support technique dell several times and they assured me that this system would be in charge of Windows 7 64 bit and all drivers would be available. Someone at - it had the same problem and resolved it? If so, how.

Thought I would add a comment to this topic, as it's the only one I found sound advice for this problem of video on the XPS One (thanks Rajer74). Mine is the A2420, but I would not be surprised if other models have been affected.

My problem actually started after the upgrade video via windows update drivers when I still had the original Vista 32 bit installed. Thought it was vista because it is this rubbish a BONE, so upgraded to Windows 7 32bitt in the free upgrade to Dell - same problem. I tried 64 bit in desperation - no change.

    Symptoms-

    • An intermittent cutting of the screen
    • Occasional breaks / crashes/freezes mouse who then thaw
    • System freezes requiring a reset
    • Error message after the recovery of black screen - something about kernel flaw (unfortunately, I deleted my screenshot so do not have the exact wording)
    • problem with one driver other than windows standard VGA driver or original (very old) 32-bit vista driver (on the Dell installation disk).

If you have any of these symptoms, it is not a fault of driver - there is a problem with your nVidia video card and it must be replaced.

If your card works fine, Windows Vista 32-bit, Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 will correctly identify the card as a GeForce 9600 M and install correct nVidia drivers. Drivers available through windows update are also correct and will work properly.  (Note that I have not been able to get the driver packs downloaded directly from the nVidia site to install, but I didn't spend much time on what Windows Update drivers are very well).

It took me forever to resolve this issue with Dell. Their support based system check means that I ended up having to wipe my HD, re - install vista 32 bit original and go throught he process everything again before the tech would believe that the problem was not the driver 64 bits (or lack thereof). I know that their system is set up to accommodate the lowest common denominator of PC savvy-ness, but they really need to simplify things for those of us who have a little idea of what's going on. I had already tried all the tech then passed around again. Spent hours on the phone with him the wretch machine remote control.

It is interesting material technology who arrived to replace the card took a look at the screenshot, I got the error and immediately said oh - "it's a problem with the card. His opinion is that, even if nVidia chips graphics excellent, they often have manufacturing problems that they are slow to own up to and difficulty. This isn't the only dell system that suffers from dodgy nVidia chips.

For the record, the Dell XPS One A2420 works perfectly with Windows 7 64 bit. Drivers are available for all standard material in the machine. Also, if you got the Win 7 32 bit free update, your also activation code will work with Win 7 64 bit, I just borrowed disc one friend (even if retail Win 7 packs have 32 and 64-bit included, upgrade of Dell has only 32 bit). I installed on a clean hard disk, you do not need to upgrade Vista despite some odd warnings of M$ who install a cleaning may not work because this is only an upgrade license. In fact, I highly recommend get rid you of all traces of Vista and do a clean install. My machine works much better on Win7 64 bit.

    Hope that helps!

  • Will there be Win7 drivers for XPS 2720?

I am interested in a 27-2720 XPS all in one office, but I'm not interested in dealing with with Windows 8 (or using the touch screen feature).

Ideally, I would like to format the hard disk and then perform a new installation of Windows 7, but I fear that there may be some some necessary drivers that are not available for Windows 7.  I suspect this would be a problem, but it would be a big problem if I'm wrong, so I'm checking.

Does anyone know whether or not that is the case?

Windows 8 Professional means you have downgrade rights to Windows 7 Professional. that is, the system is allowed to run Windows 7 Professional. This is why you don't need to purchase Windows 7 separately. The installation process is the same.

It seems to be nothing too special listed in Windows 8 pilots. All listed Windows 8 drivers are Realtek, Intel or nVidia. They should have Windows 7 drivers available.

  • Why is - XPS 13 base model not available in India

But only one model of XPS13 is available in India, the touch with the 5th gen i7 version.

    Hi Sambitghosh22,

Thanks for your message and your suggestions for products in your area.

Products are available in different countries depending on several factors, some of them are the customer demand, availability of parts, the available technology, legal implications and profitablility.  It is possible that many of these types of factors is not available in your market right now, but maybe in the future.  I'll be happy to post if I get more information.

I bought an EVO TB Samsung 840 1 to uprgrade my SSD XPS 13 256, as I was runnning out of space.

  • XPS 18 - what version should get?

I am interested in the great "all-in-one office" XPS 18 tablet.  But there are two versions, £100 apart in price. What does one give more expensive, apart a seemingly faster processor?  I don't see any other difference in spec.

    And is it really useful?

The only really much CPU work, I would probably do is the management of photos via Adobe Lightroom, and eventually, I might change occasionally short videos.  I don't know enough about computers to know if the faster version would make much difference.  I don't really play games.

    Thank you

    Hi Grannybut55,

This is the forum USA, so I don't know what difference is offered for your country.

I can tell you that a little more big processor makes the computer drive and operate a bit faster and smoother. If your order shows site, an I - 5 or I-7 of the base you can choose either and it would work.

  • No noise from XPS L502X

The sound of my laptop no longer works and I don't know why. I looked through many settings that I could and cannot diagnose the problem. Helmet shots work perfectly well and reading devices show that his plays, but nothing doesn't come out. Any suggestions?

Also I went in for my audio drivers Device Manager, I have uninstalled them and then restarted. Who re - installed, correct?

Yes. If you do this and do not check the box "delete the driver software", then when you restart the Realtek audio driver is rebuilt the existing files on the hard drive with the restored default driver configuration. If you do not check the box, then the Realtek files are deleted, then when you restart Windows installs its own native audio driver (called "High definition Audio Device" in Device Manager).

Another way to reinstall the Realtek driver is to download and install the version of the XPS L502x download page. If you do, remember to select your operating system from the menu drop down. Doing it this way Gets a new copy of the file, which is good in cases where the driver corruption is suspected, or when a driver needs to be updated.

Based on this information you think it could be faulty sensor circuit?

Here are the symptoms of a missed sense pin:

    * Speakers do not work and are not active or deselected
    * Headphone Jack works
    * Reinstall audio driver does not help
    * Audio test Dell Diagnostics passes
    * On models with 2 headphone jacks, you can be "verified" in the dashboard as if in use
    * Sometimes, but not always, a very gentle agitation to a plug in the plug will get to resume normal operation, at least temporarily.

If you have these symptoms then it is pretty certain that you have the PIN direction failed. There is no direct test for her. The 'test of Audio in the Dell Diagnostics passes' symptom means you should hear sounds or music during audio tests, you did.

    rjacinto
I passed all the tests in the category except for "headphones 1 (HP1) reading test" and "helmet 2 (HP2) reading test.»

I don't know how to interpret it. You have not heard audio with headphones during the tests, but you do when you're back in Windows?

    rjacinto
is anyway for me to fix this?

The way to fix is to replace the Jack, but making your model is integrated into the motherboard, making it difficult to do. If this had happened when your warranty is still in effect, Dell would have replaced the mother Board together. If you are interested in working within your laptop, you can get the repair of the XPS L502x documents page. If you get the manual then download in Adobe Reader to see this is good.

I have the list of the possible workarounds in the FAQ of Jack for headphones. Down in section 5 it and try the last workaround - one for the Realtek audio. It was something that I fell on the internet and I don't know if it works or not.

  • Question of graphics Dell Studio XPS 8100

I plan to upgrade my desktop computer Dell Studio XPS 8100 with a new graphics card, so that I can play new games such as Skyrim and Star Wars the old republic.

Can someone tell me which of these cards is best for this purpose, corresponds to my computer and if other changes are needed (ideally no)?

    EVGA GTX 550 VGA (GDDR5, PCI-Express, 2 GB)
    Sapphire 6750 (PCI Express, DDR3, 2 GB)
    Sapphire 6790 (PCI-Express, GDDR5, 1 GB)
PALIT GTX 550 Ti (GDDR5, PCI Express, 1 GB)

    Thanks in advance,

    Sikkaech

Based on the recommended for Skyrim card, you will need to go with the HD 6790 or GTX 550 it.  However, your biggest problem is food that is only 350 watts.  For all these cards, a higher power is recommended by the manufacturer.  The HD 6790 is the best on the list with the GTX 550 Ti in 2nd.  I'll take the other two on your list because they would fall the recommended card, but they would always play the games.   I would recommend if you upgrade the power supply to go with a unit of minimum mark of 500 watts with the necessary connections.

Skyrim recommended card: 1 GB RAM NVIDIA or AMD ATI video card (Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 or higher; ATI Radeon 4890 or higher).  Old video card then the ones I showed would be comparable.

If you choose not to change your diet, a GTS 450 or HD 6750 can work.  I don't see much interest to get a card of 2 GB to this level.  It's going to be better than GDDR3 memory GDDR5.

  • XPS 13 whistling hiss of motherboard

Someone else with a Dell XPS 13 hears a whistle/whistle noise that changes frequency at random? It's very embarrassing for me. A Dell technician has replaced the mobo and disconnected the screen, battery, keyboard backlighting, speakers and disc, so noise should come from the mobo. He told me that probably all XPS 13 s make this noise, but I can't believe I'm the first person to be driven crazy by it. Is not very strong, and if the fan is running it masks it. But in the middle of the night without the fan turns, it is very obvious and boring even from a few meters more far.

So far the Dell told me: "these steps should solve your problem" and connected to a massive thread on ALSA on ubuntuforums, who said to try a million different things. (I did, nothing solved the problem). (it's a Sputnik, but the noise is there in the bios, so it has nothing to do with linux). Interestingly, I hear not the sound while the diagnostics are running.

They also said: "We are working on an issue that seems similar to what you have." But for the moment not responded to my request for more details.

I have a Dell XPS 13 Haswell, and he also whistles. It's worse with the backlight on the keypad is on. It is also triggered by some trendy 3 USB products.

I have a USB hub 3.0 Anker plugged as a sort of dock, so now the machine whistles constantly. It is very annoying.

I suspect that the problem is due to electromagnetic interference (EMI), which could possibly be solved by better protecting.

The potential for USB 3 causes of EMI is well known. Intel has a white paper on this subject:

    http://www.Intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/white-papers/USB3-frequency-interference-paper.PDF

    Dell should know better.

In particular, it ruins sitting in a quiet room with laptop computer, where all you can here is portable computer whistling destructive development.

I expected more of a computer laptop premium and will conduct the review to buy another Dell in the future if it is not resolved.

  • Using the system on a Dell XPS 13 restore

I have a Dell XPS 13 purchased this year. I am interested in installing Ubuntu (the image of Sputnik or vanilla 12.04). I'm working on how I could restore the original image of Windows 8. I created a restore USB drive but I can't find useful information about how to use the restore disc. How can I boot the disk so that it can restore my system?

I would also like to keep my partitions recovery and restore of partitions. Is this possible? I tried to access the startup recovery programs upward but can't find any restore options.

System recovery without using Windows on Dell XPS 13 seems to be a feature not documented - can someone help me?

(Otherwise I am very satisfied with the machine.)

not sure, but I think that this video can enlighten us on what's going on?

    cs_setInnerHtml ('video_db9c0568-d9d6-4cde-8e1f-cb630ec42ab8', ");

Apparently, you must disable secure startup before trying to boot from the restore disc...
