Introduction of ESXi with DR in mind

I'm a bit new to vmware and had a question about the feasibility of a possible configuration.

Currently, I'll buy a new server to host the free version of ESXi.  It's for a small office of 3 performance isn't a problem.  I have 3 virtual machines on the server a server Rd, files and applications.  I want to do is install esxi on a USB key connected to this server.  Get a NAS with Raid 10 and have all the vm 3 located on the nas.  If the primary server goes down, I would move the usb drive to a free desktop computer that has access to the NAS and use it as a temporary solution until the server can be fixed.  I don't know if this is possible because the machines will not be the same (a xeon 2.4, Office doubled heart Pentium 4 Server).  Can you get it someone please let me know if this is taken in charge and if not how reliable a cheap solution that would give me redundancy.  I agree with getting hard disks and a raid for server controller, but failure, I would like to have a reliable process that is easy to set up the backup (office).  In addition, data are saved by a continuous backup solution, I fear that this return to the VM until the material on the server stops working.

Thank you in advance for your help!

If you are running the free version, you will not open a case of support in your main condition must therefore a stable solution (which, in my view, it does not contain an old desktop pc).

Take two servers (a new, old as the backup, both on HCL) connect to your NAS and you will have no problem to start your virtual machines from both hosts. Of course you can on this VM Handbook if a server goes down, if don't use does not a version that provides the feature HA.

Kind regards

Mario

  • Permissions to connect to esxi with perl sdk

I tried the user scripts perl for surveillance. I have 1 Server ESXi 5.1 I can connect to directly and the script has no problem connecting.

I have another 3 esxi servers which are connected to a server for vsphere.

On the same server, I can connect directly to the server esxi with vsphere client no problem.

On the vsphere server, I can only connect to the server for vsphere, I can't connect directly to the esxi hosts. (http, https, ssh, etc...)

I think it's the issue that I have with the sdk for perl. I have a SSO connection that I can user to connect to the server for vsphere, but these permissions will not get access to the esxi host.

Anyone have any ideas on how to solve this problem?

    Thank you

I'm really not sure about the writing of scripts and other things, but if you need to create local users in ESXi host, you must connect to the host directly and then go to the tab of local users and groups and create users.

  • How to run mbralign on esxi with vsphere CLI

I have a few virtual machines with disks misaligned, each of them can be found on ESXi, I also vSphere CLI installed on my laptop.

Thus, it is possible to run mbralign using vSphere CLI, since there is no console on ESXi. If so, what would be the command.

Not possible, vCLI aims for vSphere management regarding the host/vms/etc., that has nothing to do with running the tools custom within the classic ESX or ESXi. As far as I know, the mbralign is not supported on ESXi, if this is the case, it is most likely must be run within the Busybox unsupported console.

Take a look to this blog post by Duncan about the alignment of the VM - http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2010/04/08/aligning-your-vms-virtual-harddisks/

  • config of memory in esxi with a hyper-v virtual machine on.

First of all, Thanks for the help.

I set up a Home Lab with ESXi 5.1.
J’ai several Linux machines. J’ai a virtual machine Windows Server 2012 Hyper -v.
I would like to know what the optimal parameters in order to maximize the 32 GB of RAM to the virtual machine Windows. ()when I use this machine do not use any other ESXi virtual machine)
J’ai not clear that if administered dynamically memory for this VM in ESXi when you manage Hyper v, dynamic Management of memory will be use all the RAM.

Thank you for everything, I hope that I have explained.

How much memory is your ESXi has? If you have not set up a special configuration for the virtual Windows machine, the ESXi Server uses the common techniques of overcommitment with the virtual machine. If you have more than 32 GB of RAM on your box of ESXi, you'll never overcommited (assuming that your other virtual machines are turned off). So the ESXi will give access to the physical to your Windows virtual machine memory as long as she asks for.

You can also ensure the physical to the virtual machine by using reservations memory, if you want to.

  • End end NIC Teaming on ESXi with redhat linux guest operating system

I'm running into a situation of lack of bandwidth for my backup server running inside the virtual machine environment. To increase bandwidth coming from a number of backup clients on my backup inside ESXi 5 server. I would like to collage x NIC 2 inside my redhat Server installation and train the grouping of NETWORK cards using Hash my ESXi host IP.

What is the feasible way to provide a 2G from end to end connection to the outside world for my redhat backup media server? or there is an inverse?

I don't think you need to add a second NETWORK card to the Redhat VM, which acts as a backup server as a single for the virtual computer NETWORK adapter can accommodate more load than 1 G.

I have a couple of Redhat with a single NIC servers. VMXNET the following example shows this ethtool sees for the NETWORK adapter on one of these Redhat servers.

    [sfuller@rhel7 ~] $ sudo ethtool eth0
    Settings for eth0:
    Supported ports: [TP]
    Supported link modes: 1000baseT/Full
    Supports auto-negotiation: no

    Duplex: full
    Port: Twisted pair
    PHYAD: 0
    Transceiver: internal
    Auto-negotiation: off
    Link detected: Yes

When I run a transfer TCP (using thrulay) from one server to another, you can see that it is 2.6Gbps average on the transfer of 10 seconds.

So this shows that we can get more than the throughput of 1 Gbps on a single "GE NIC" on a Redhat VM.

You will need to do is, as you mentioned, change load balancing on the host than the Redhat VM ESX runs using the road based on the hash of the IP. This will allow the Redhat VM to use more than a single teddy bear on the ESX host. You also need to several customers, including LSB of their XOR IP addresses differently, but you said you have several clients and so unless you're really unlucky with the IP addresses to clients have you should be good there.

I hope this helps and good luck.

  • Introduction-cache-config with consistency 12.1.2 using?

In the 3.7.1 version, I used consistency-common incubator library to divide my config of cache files.  This was done with the presentation-cache-config element.

    Example:

    <? XML version = "1.0"? >

    "" < cache-config xmlns: xsi = "http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
    "xmlns ="http://xmlns.oracle.com/coherence/coherence-cache-config"
    "" xsi: schemaLocation = "http://xmlns.oracle.com/coherence/coherence-cache-config coherence-cache - config.xsd".
    xmlns:element = "class://com.oracle.coherence.environment.extensible.namespaces.XmlElementProcessingNamespaceContentHandler".
    item: introduction-cache-config = "cache-config - 1.xml, cache-config - 2.xml, cache-config - 3.xml" >

    < / cache-config >

I read that the incubator 12, for version 12.x consistency, will no more support packages associated with this function.

    http://coherence.Oracle.com/download/attachments/14188570/incubator+update.PDF?version=2 & ModificationDate = 1353937318977

How can I optimize the same cache divided into coherence 12.1.2?

    TKS!

    JP

    Hi JP,

Now you can!   We have just released an overview of coherence 12.0.0 incubator based on coherence 12.1.2.  This includes support to use the previous namespaces (like element: introduction-cache-config) 12.1.2 coherently.

The 12.0.0 - SNAPSHOT is now available on: https://maven.java.net/

The most recent documentation for this snapshot is available here: http://coherence-community.github.io/coherence-incubator/12.0.0-SNAPSHOT/

We welcome your comments for new version!

  • ESXi with a different number of CPUs

    Hello

I was wondering if we can have more in a vmware cluster managed by vcenter 4.1:

2 or more servers esxi 4.1 with a different number of cpu

for example an esxi has 2 cpu and there are 4 cpu

Or it is advisable to have the same number of CPUs on all esxi hosts in a cluster.

Note: All are same active VCA processor family

    Thank you

Without doubt, it is recommended, but I don't see a reason to not do so, especially because it's too easy to add 4, 6 or 8 processors... addition of mix n match cpu / cores can become a standard with all this different configuration of the CPU.

    You should not have problems.

  • Conversion of VMWorkstation to ESXi with snapshots?

Hello.. I have to migrate my images of VMWorkstation (7.1) to ESXi Sever (4.1). I have used VMWare converter and managed to move 1 image, but I see that snapshots are missing. It is a way in which I can then move my snapshots? Or should I remove them? Help, please!

    Welcome to the community,

with the conversion of the virtual machine, all the snapshots will be merged into the destination virtual disk. There is no way to preserve snapshots using the converter.

  • VLAN Trunking ESXi with blade HP c7000 and Juniper EX3200

Hi, I'm quite new in VMWare field, because recently my company is going to launch a public cloud in Malaysia, his will combine several technologies, so I guess I have no choice but to go and study all materials and related software. My background is system and network, I understood the concept and success raising (EX3200) switch with port is lucky trunking with id vlan native 48, where my other vlan is 45-47. However later on, I will consider how I need to activate multiple markup in ESXi, I found this VST it one that I seek, I created VLANs inside the vSwitch. Then I change my machines in vlan respectively (label to change card). Then I change connect it outside (adapter for vMotion and multi-service, call Management Network default console) to vlan 48, however, when I change, my blade appear to be isolated from others. I remove id vlan, or put as 4095, then it works again, but the machine all connect them my VLAN (45-47) can not ping to the outside, please help me in this...

Yes do not activate the switch with VLAN, vlan 48 which is native on the trunk port create a portgroup of vmware on the vswitch who has network you cards connected to the switch but leave the tag of vlan empty this will be then in the vlan default of the switch, and then create three more vmware exchanges one for each vlan and this time make sure you enter the id vlan.

then provide that the routing has been implemented each vm will be able to talk to each other (if there are now firewalls to stop).

  • VMDK file between windows and ESXi with VMFS on iSCSI copy

Hi all!  I searched here and that you find that no good answer but then I hope that someone can help you.

We have a group of 3 servers ESXi running off a single iSCSI target and often need to copy VM from the VMFS file system.

To help the conversion tool is incredibly slow, it's on.  WinSCP and FastSCP work at about 5 MB and 3 MB/sec.  FTP is the best option so far, but it is only 8 MB/sec.  When we have to copy around a virtual machine that takes a lot of time of 20 GB.  In addition, when we make 15 copies of a VM is incredibly long.

I hoped to be able to directly connect to the iSCSI target and mount the system files somehow, but can't seem to find a way to do it.  Defect is there any method better or faster?  Perhaps a better FTP server than the option of proftpd?

We hoped a local copy with either USB or eSATA method, but doesn't seem to work.  USB is not detected even and I can not get a non-VMFS file system to mount via eSATA.

If it works better we can set up a linux machine to mount iSCSI target if copies of file can work this way.

    Thanks for the tips!

  • Update ESXi with VCenter VM on the host?

I am trying to upgrade my host ESXi 4.1 4.1 Update 1, but the VCenter VM lies on this matter.  I have to do to make sure that the DB VCenter is not corrupt, or can I just stop, put the host in maintenance mode and using esxupdate?

    With shared storage, you can:

    • Make sure that you have not activated the mode of locking for guests
    • Stop the vCenter Server VM
    • connection to the host on which it is running and remove it from the inventory
    • connect to the host of the second, browse the data store and add it to the inventory
    • vCenter Server on the second host market

Generally, you will use Update Manager (if you are using vCenter Server), but in cases where this is not possible, you can also use vihostupdate.

  • Single node ESXi with large local storage

I have a HP DL180 G6 loaded with 2 160 GB drives, in the opposite direction. I'm also 6 2 TB disks in a RAID5 configuration including a spare drive (approximately 7.4 to useful).

What is the best way to take full advantage of the direct storage of this machine?  SAN/NAS isn't in the budget.

Currently, I have install ESXi sitting on the 160 GB mirrored drives and thought I'd get to use all of the 7.4 to other readers as a local data store, but only the instalation disk ESXi shows upward, the other readers that have been configured to RAID5 but do not appear in vsphere.

    Thank you.

What RAID controller do you use? E200/P400? There BBWC/FBWC?

To be able to use the full 7.4 to with ESXi 4.1 you must divide the RAID in several logical volumes, smaller than the maximum supported size 2 TB less than 512 bytes. To do this, boot from the CD/DVD of SmartStart and run the ACU (Array Configuration Utility). Once completed, start the new ESXi and use the "Add storage" Wizard to create VMFS storage of data on the logical volumes. Depending on the maximum size of virtual disk that you plan to use, you should consider to choose the appropriate block size while creating VMFS data warehouses.
