  This has nothing to do with memory - it's the SSD. Word tries to create a temporary file to use as a backup if the program crashes while you are working. First, run the Microsoft Update program to see if there are updates you have missed. Second, Microsoft currently supports only versions 2011 and 2016, so if yours is older, you should consider the upgrade. Thirdly, I suspect that the temporary file is not get created so that you have fewer cancellations (maybe any) and that if the program crashes you have to restore.

  I too use Calibre and Windows 8. The Kindle app for win 8, I do not. What I've done, it's just to download Kindle for PC version XP, Vista and Windows 7. In this way, I get my 'Kindle' content and can then move files in Calibre. ;) It will download ALL your books if you tell it to Sync. The best way to avoid what is go to kindle store books in the clouds, switch to view most recent list, then click on this book. It will download the file.   I hate to say it, but it would be a great time for a bigger hard drive.  While 40 GB meets at least for installation you really need more for in-place-upgrading a system using 37 GB.  Setup needs space for temporary files, its own temporary relocation, etc.
