Is it me? Fusion on Snow Leopard, Ubuntu 10.10: no network, none of the shared folders.

On my Macbook, I use VMWare Fusion course and installed Ubuntu 10.10, which worked pretty well. I'm not an expert in everything, I use Ubuntu only for very limited use and do not plan to make my standard OS, but in this case, I have no choice. For this work, I need to share files, copy and paste text and use the network.

But from the beginning, I have these problems:

#1: whenever I send the virtual machine to sleep and wake up more later he acknowledges no more network connection.

#2: I share a folder on my Mac OS but I can't see them in Ubuntu. To be exact, I can only see the public folders from Mac users, but not those that I added.

#3: copy / paste between Mac and Ubuntu does not work.

Then I looked through the menu and found that VMWare Tools are not installed, then I started the installation via the menu. The only result is that a CD of VMWare tools is downloaded and installed - and then nothing happens. There is a text "manifest.txt" file that contains version information and an archive that contains a Setup program. If I double-click on that one I am wondering with what application I want to open it. Very funny... I don't know how to use it.

Any suggestions for a beginner?

In the VmWare Fusion menu, I choose the folders that are on Mac and decide if he is reading only or read and write.

Looks like you use folders shared HGFS and involved getting up from different Windows and Linux handle this. In Linux, look under/mnt/hgfs to find the HGFS folder shared.

I just changed one in Mac OS shared, everyone is allowed to read and write. Now I can see the content from Ubuntu. But I certainly don't want to share with all the members of my network. This folder is NOT in the list of folders that are common between Mac and Ubuntu, it is shared over the network, but not through VMWare.

OS X folders behave differently from HGFS shared - folders they use different protocols and transport mechanisms.

172.16.143.132 is a non-routable address.  Take a look "3. Private address space' in the document RFC 1597 - Address Allocation for Private Internets.

Except for VMnet0, the default value for the last byte is always 1 for all other VMnets on the host and, therefore, the last byte of a IP address of gateway with a VMnet NAT in the default values of comments 2.  These are encoded in the VMware Virtual Network Infrastructure but can be easily changed in the virtual network Editor.  Oh, sorry, it's true that VMware has not provided users of VMware Fusion with a publisher of network virtual as in VMware Workstation or even their free VMware Player!   This means that any changes made to the VMnets must be done manually.

  • break-in Mavericks in Snow Leopard

In April, I thought I spoke to by phone 6 Fusion vmware to virtualize my macbook 2009 end pro under snow leopard to a whole new macbook pro mavericks running by linking them with an ethernet cable after the installation of vmware.  The idea is that the machine of the snow leopard from 2009, with all its files and programs (so no need to reinstall the programs), virtualized on a brand new macbook pro mavericks, and I still have a 6 vmware fusion bookmark to a page which, in April, showed a diagram to connect two computers with a cable and saying it will now work with Snow Leopard to the Mavericks.  But now the link takes me to 7 merger with no diagram or information. I'm pretty sure that you can virtualize w / vmware an old windows xp pc to a new macbook pro installed Mavericks, but, as I said, since April, I really thought you could w / snow leopard too.  If no, what with snow leopard "Server" in a way that allows me to do what I want, without having to reinstall everything old software on the new macbook pro?

    Thank you.

    Stu22

    Hi Stu,

    SUMMARY:

I have a number of programs that will not run on anything whatsoever beyond Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. I need to open old files, data search, etc. These applications include Eudora (e-mail), Microsoft Office 2004 (which can open old Word and Excel files correctly), X (graphic) of the canvas, 4 final (musical notation) and more. I have run these programs to a guest from VMware Fusion running Snow Leopard Server.

Here are a few thoughts that may help you when you are considering what to do:

SNOW LEOPARD SERVER ON YOUR CLIENT VMWARE, NOT SNOW LEOPARD "CLIENT":

Snow Leopard Server is running as a guest virtual machine but not the regular 'customer' of Snow Leopard version. The license for the 'client' (non-server) Snow Leopard version does not allow it. In addition, VMware imposes this restriction and allows only of Snow Leopard Server. There are ways to hack around the restriction, but why bother when Snow Leopard Server is so cheap? (See below).

BUY SERVER SNOW LEOPARD FROM APPLE FOR $20 TODAY:

You can always buy Mac OS X Server 10.6. 3 REV 1 (Snow Leopard Server, unlimited clients license). The price is $ 19.99. Order it by calling the Apple Store at (800) 692-7753 and ask for part MC588Z/a number. not all sellers will recognize what you want and will be able to find it, but don't lose heart - try again. I called and checked that it is always available since last night, November 26, 2014. It comes with Installation and Admin Tools DVD.

ALL YOUR PROGRAMS RUN ON SNOW LEOPARD SERVER:

Any program that runs on Snow Leopard 'client' will run under Snow Leopard Server. If you ignore the server components, in fact, there is no real difference.

YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CREATE A HOST SERVER SNOW LEOPARD ON THE NEW MAC:

Some new Macs have problems installing Snow Leopard Server from the installation DVD in a VMware virtual machine. Basically, the Mac OS X 10.6.3 installer DVD does not contain drivers for the latest Mac hardware. If you have problems, you may need to create the virtual machine of Snow Leopard Server comments in VMware on an older Mac, install the latest Apple updates (for 10.6.8 version), and then copy it to your new computer. You must run the Apple updates first on the old machine, so that your comments of Snow Leopard Server will get the drivers it needs to run on your new MacBook Pro.

CREATE THE SERVER SNOW LEOPARD ON YOUR OLD MACBOOK PRO CLIENT?

Maybe you have a copy of VMware Fusion version 5 running on your old MacBook Pro 2009. VMware Fusion version 5 is the latest version of the Fusion that runs under Snow Leopard. Create new comments of Snow Leopard Server on the old MacBook Pro, update the customer newly created to 10.6.8 on the old MacBook Pro version, then copy the .vmwarevm file to the new MacBook Pro. (Do not forget to delete the comments on the old Mac after copy you it to the new Mac, if you plan to use the Migration Wizard).

WHAT IT TAKES TO RUN ON YOUR NEW SNOW LEOPARD SERVER COMMENTS:

If it were me, I would first ask myself, ' do I really want my EVERYTHING old 2009 MacBook Pro running in a VMware guest? My answer would be, "certainly not!" I would just install these applications relatively little (and associated data files) that will not work on the new MacBook Pro with the Mavericks (or Yosemite). I named a few examples of applications in my SUMMARY, above. From my own experience, I set up new comments of Snow Leopard Server manually - install the applications 'fresh' and then copy the data files on the accounts on the comments of Snow Leopard Server. Yes, this means the set up the preferences for each application, but it is clean and it works. For the rest of your MacBook Pro 2009 applications, get the current versions and run them on your new MacBook Pro "native". Create VMware Fusion folders shared to move files back and forth between your new MacBook Pro (Mavericks/Yosemite) and guest of Snow Leopard Server as needed.

    MIGRATION-RELATED ISSUES:

Let's say you want to move the entire 2009 MacBook Pro to a guest of Snow Leopard Server. Frankly, if it were me, I manually install all applications and copy all the data. Certainly, it would take a lot of time and effort, but it's the safest way to give a satisfactory final result.

An automated approach would be to use the Apple's Migration Assistant. My experience with the Migration Wizard was not good. Whenever I tried Migration Wizard (with real Mac!), there were problems. I hope that your experience will be better; in fact, much better (eeek!).

FIRST MAKE A BACKUP OF THE FILE NEWLY CREATED SNOW LEOPARD SERVER GUEST!

If you start over, why go through the hassle of installing Snow Leopard Server and apply all the Apple updates, when you can just copy the file .vmwarevm to a backup first? Hello? (If something is wrong, copy the backup file and try again.)

A good thing: If you have the time and patience, you can try different approaches to see what works. If something does not work as you like it, remove the VMware client and try something different. Here are a few things to think about...

HOW TO MIGRATE YOUR MACBOOK PRO 2009?

Let's say you have decided to migrate your 2009 MacBook Pro set to a Snow Leopard VMware guest. Suppose you have created a guest of Snow Leopard and it works now on your new MacBook Pro. Here are some considerations and approaches:

    * USE CARBON COPY CLONE TO CLONE THE MACBOOK PRO 2009 TO AN EXTERNAL DRIVE?

It's a good approach, but whatever you do will be VERY slow. Your MacBook Pro 2009 is compatible Firewire and USB 2.0. Your new MacBook Pro supports USB 3.0 (also 2.0) and Thunderbolt.

FireWire is reasonably fast, but I've never seen an external Firewire drive which also has USB 3.0. External FireWire drives seem to have USB 2.0 only, which would be VERY slow attached to your guest of Snow Leopard Server. You can try to use a Thunderbolt/Firewire interface, but then you would have to treat it as a shared folder in VMware and exploring uncharted territory when it comes to file copy using Migration Wizard.

In addition, I read complaints about the reliability of the Apple's Thunderbolt/Firewire interface. Maybe the problems have been fixed by now, but I don't know that I would trust that I could get a reliable copy of something far greater than a Mac together.

    * USE CARBON COPY CLONE (OR DISK UTILITY) TO MAKE A DISK IMAGE OF YOUR MACBOOK PRO 2009 FILE?

An advantages of a disk image, it is that when it is copied to your new MacBook Pro, you can try to get Migration Assistant to work in different ways, based on conservation of the Snow Leopard Server prompt if you want to erase and start over. It will take a lot of disk space, however.

You still have questions and a few tests before. You could get a Thunderbolt/Firewire interface, put your 2009 MacBook Pro in target disk Mode and use Carbon Copy Cloner or Apple disk utility to create a disk image file of it on your new MacBook Pro. (I would use CCC).

The disk image and the host VMware files can be very large. You have enough disk space?

You can create a disk image of the 2009 MacBook Pro on an external drive. Use Carbon Copy Cloner (or disk utility), but keep in mind the performance and reliability issues I described above.

    * RUN ON ETHERNET MIGRATION ASSISTANT?

You alluded to this approach in your original post. Here is a link to a web page from Apple describing the process. Again, I think you will be pioneer territory unexplored here for the rest of us. Good luck! :-)

    http://support.Apple.com/en-us/HT4413

If you decide to try the approach of Ethernet, then think about what follows:

-Use Gigabit ethernet if you can. Otherwise, connect the two Macs. If you do not, copy speeds will be very slow.

-You will probably need Network Adapter of the client server Snow Leopard VMware (VMware guest settings) in Bridged Networking mode.

-If you connect the two Macs, you have to give (dedicated) fixed IP addresses on the same "subnet". It's three addresses IP - one for the 2009 MacBook Pro, one for the new MacBook Pro and the other for the Snow Leopard Server prompt. Go to the network settings in their respective system preferences. Don't forget to write their first original settings and put things back once the migration is complete.

Common example IP set for you to use:

    192.168.0.250, 192.168.0.251 and 192.168.0.252; Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 router (gateway): 192.168.0.1

    192.168.1.250, 251, 252; Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 router (gateway): 192.168.1.1

    10.0.1.250, 251, 252; Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0; Router: 10.0.1.1

I hope you have a lot of time and patience. Happy troubleshooting! Good luck!

I am currently using OS X Yosemite 10.10.5.  I bought in 2009 iMac with Snow Leopard and have to Lion then updated my current operating system.  The internal dvd player has worked with much fussing, (insert the disc - closing - turn after a wait - by pushing the drive when he jumped on reboot).  If I had the chance after a few hours, the video disc show up on my desk.  When this happened, I was opening the dvd player that was in the Finder and the disc would play. I also tried to open the dvd first player and then insert the disc.  That no longer works.  Yesterday, only it just stop working.  The reader still takes dvd and swirls and click as before but then ejects the dvd. Repeatedly stop and restart is no longer works.  I make sure that the dvd be clean before I use it and have tried many different DVDs without success.  I think it's a software issue.  Does anyone have an idea/instructions a nearly dead grandmother brain that can follow to update or redate back to original factory setting to help this poor Smartdrive not so smart?

  • Address Book G4 Intel Snow Leopard Leopard

I want to get my contacts from address book to my Mini G4 under Leopard on my Intel Mini under Snow Leopard.  While I know that there is an address book import feature, I don't know what to do exactly.  What file/folder on the Snow Leopard address book G4 would need to import contact information?  Could I copy this file/folder to an external drive of the G4 and then plug that Intel, then use the Snow Leopard Intel AddressBook import feature to import from the external drive?

Eventually, I have a drive external bootable, I am using with the G4 Mini (Leopard) and using Time Machine to on it to save the G4.  Is it possible to use it to import the Contacts address book in the address book of Intel?

You can give me any help will be greatly appreciated.  I am a "novice" for sure.

On the G4: Open address book. Click any contact in the list to select it, and then press command-a to select all. On the file menu, choose 'export vCard. At the prompt to select a location to save it - I suggest the office. The result will be a single file containing all contacts.

Now you need to transfer the file to the SL mini - the easiest way is to copy it to a USB key or external hard drive.

On the SL mini, open address book and on the file menu, choose "import...". ». Access your vCard file, click once to highlight, then click the "Open" button to import the contacts.

    Thanks for the tips.

I tried this, but after a little violin, I found the source of the problem.

When I create the .json files .html permissions read 'me' as the owner and "Everyone" does not have access. I had already changed this in Mavericks so that 'everyone' with rw permissions. But when I reboot in Snow Leopard under exactly the same user name) and observe the information area for the two files on the USB key, the name of the owner has changed. Always read "Everyone" with rw permissions, it does not open. I had to add another condition of permissions with my name and give him rw access explicit, then it worked.

  • Using Snow Leopard 10.6.8

    Hi Gang

In what concerns a friend MA877LL iMac update to 'Maverick' and having many gels and other pending issues, I'm going to reformat and return to Snow Leopard. Note that this person uses not all professional applications of any kind. She would like to go back and use the mail program and the version of Safari initially provided with this iMac about 9 year.

It has all the original disks and save anything necessary.

I'm quite familiar with the process of reformatting but have a few questions about 10.6.8:

Considering that Apple takes more support for Snow Leopard, there are still many people out there who are satisfied using 10.6.8. I just want to know if there are questions of possible "Head Up" as for safety, Safari, e-mail within 10.6.8 client or something else?

Y at - it an available (in 10.6.8) update of Safari , which could add a security if it's a problem? Or maybe install Mozilla for Mac would be beneficial somehow?

    Thank you!

    Mike

Currently, there are now a large number of sites that require new versions of Safari. This requires the upgrade of OS X, which is not possible with some 2007 models: iMac (mid-2007 or newer) - model identifier 7.1 or later. To find the identifier of the model open system information in the Utilities folder. It is displayed in the Panel on the right.

If erase you the drive, you will need to install Snow Leopard in order to further improve. This means that it must have a copy of the retail DVD of Snow Leopard. If it is that: you can buy Snow Leopard at the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (US). The price is $ 19.99 plus tax. You will receive a physical media by mail after placing your order.

After the installation of Snow Leopard you will need to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Combo Update v1.1 update Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

It can download El Capitan or Mavericks. The Mavericks can be found in the purchase page of the App Store, where she is the re - download. El Capitan would be a new download.

    Model no. A1283 2008

I tried to install Snow Leopard using the gray installation disc supplied with my Macbook Pro.

It didn't work, probably because the drive is linked to my MBP (I guess).

But I'm not 100% sure if the previous failure, I had was really just because of the gray drive or the Mac Mini 2008 does not support Snow Leopard.

Hope someone can give me the answer, so I'm not an unnecessary purchase.

    Thank you!

This is because the gray disc is specific to your model of MacBook Pro. Any Mac that has an Intel processor, at least 1 GB of RAM and running 10.4 or 10.5 can run 10.6.

I recently bought a used iMac for my daughter (27 mid-2011 "Core i7, 3.4 GHz) who's been upgraded to El Capitan. I want to set up as a dual-boot machine, with a small Snow Leopard partition so that it can run some old but still useful PowerPC under Rosetta software. (Snow Leopard is the operating system provided with this iMac, so there should be no material inconsistency.) I have not received no installer discs with the iMac, but have an installer for Snow Leopard DVD I bought for updating an iMac of 2006 now-dead Leopard.

When I insert the DVD, the installation icon has an 'X' through it and will not start, and the Setup icon is dimmed in the System Preferences/Startup Disk window. If I try to start the iMac from the installation disc, I get a kernel panic and do a forced shutdown. I'm guessing that El Capitan (and probably earlier who succeeded Snow Leopard) defines something in the PRAM or elsewhere which prevents the installation of an older operating system. Further, I guess the only way to get around this is to reformat the discs (it has a HD and SSD) and start with Snow Leopard on a machine "blank." (Other that the hassle, I have no problem doing this, as I still customize Mac.)

Someone can confirm this conjecture, or suggest a simpler approach?

Apples are animals different from Windows systems.  Machines designed for a version of the operating system cannot run a version prior to the exception in a virtual machine.

My * early *-2011 MBP came with 10.6.7, but the "detail disk" is 10.6.3.  My machine cannot boot from the drive of retail.

Please call 1-800-APL-CARE, give them (not us in the free gallery) serial number, pay $20 for processing or shipping to get copies of the original installation discs.

  • 10.5.8 update Snow Leopard disc

Here are the details on my computer:

    Model name: iMac
    Model identifier:
Processor name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number of processors: 1
    Total number of cores: 2
    L2 Cache Memory: 6 MB
    Memory: 4 GB

When I bought this computer (fall 2009), it came with the drive for Mac OS X Snow Leopard.  I've never installed the disc and were broadcast 10.5.8.

I'm ready to upgrade level and need advice.  Is there something special I need to do before installing?  I have Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 software installed and want that he kept intact / operation.  Other than that, I have all the important documents saved.

Once installed Snow Leopard software, should I continue to be upgraded?  And what version (for example, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, El Capitan)?  This is where I get confused.  I read about the problems that occur if you upgrade exceeding the capabilities of your computer and it messes up other systems.

Thank you very much for your help!

    Dana

You want to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 in order to get the App Store to improve in addition to newer versions.

The first step in this process must be a full backup at all on your Mac.

Your iMac can be upgraded to El Capitan 10.11.1. The important thing you lose beyond 10.6.8 is supported for the PPC code. He programs very old ones that have been written for the PowerPC processor, which used to go to Intel processor before Apple. As far as the problems go that the vast majority of them is caused by software of third fake that was installed on the Mac.

  • HP Photosmart C4580 Wireless problem - Snow Leopard

    Hello

My HP Photosmart C4580 has worked for wireless (albeit a bit slowly) until I made 2 changes:

    (a) I changed my router SSID (network name) and password

    (b) I have upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard

At first I tried to use the HP configuration utility to reconfigure the network my printer wireless.  It doesn't not work - he told me that my printer to be connected via USB, while he was already.  I tried different things and ended up reset wireless to the printer (using the printer menu).

Then, in the HP that I read that HP utilities do not work with Snow Leopard help files.  But the instructions for wireless network with my snow leopard printer did not work.  I could install my printer via USB (and downloaded driver), but it does not appear on the list without wire.  I couldn't find a way to configure wireless with USB connection, as I already had when I initially set up my printer with Leopard.

Video instructions to set up wireless for Mac (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/board/message?board.id=Macintosh&thread.id=231) seemed promising, because it would finally give me a chance to give my printer on my network information.  Wireless Network Test report gives the network name (SSID hpsetup) (since I have reset the settings), that I found promising, although only under IP address, he said 'not applicable' (and obviously fails it test under 'Network name found' failed-it).  However, my macbook can't take any hpsetup network and on the network Page Configuration I printed the network status is 'offline', Active connection Type is None, URL is 0.0.0.0.  Apparently my printer cannot connect to this network hpsetup.

I have spent a few days on this and I am completely at a loss to know what to do.  Can someone please advise?  Thank you very much.

OK, we can solve the problem.

First you uninstall the 10.5 HP software before installing 10.6?  If this isn't the case, we might as well do it now.

Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard / click Uninstall HP
    Click on continue
Highlight your device in the left pane
Hold down the Ctrl and Opt, as well as Apple and click on uninstall
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall all hp software. (At this point, if you continue, all HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled, this is why we do not run this thing all the time)
    Click on continue
    Let the cleaner it is.

Then, remove the printer in System Preferences, Print & Fax.

After that, go to hp.com and download the 10.6 complete package

Having attached to the C4580 usb cable and select Wireless when you can.  Follow the rest by.

I noticed problems where people have "special" characters in their password wireless.  If it fails, and you have no alphabetic characters or digital, you will need to go through the process of hpsetup ad hoc, as detailed in the video you mentioned.
