  If you're only going to do the virtualization of servers (not VMware View) the vCenter Server does not need to be a member of the domain, or you need a separate SQL Server for a small environment. The edition of SQL SERVER 2005 Express (included in the vCenter Server installation) is sufficient.

  We recently have quote a customer to purchase vsphere essentials with a server that will run 2 processors 6 hearts of each.

  After a month, that the customer has accepted the quote if we order the server, but we noticed it came with 2 CPUs, 8 cores on each. We always evaluate vsphere esxi 4.1 and we haven't bought yet most of license. The reason to upgrade to vsphere essentials was to migrate 3-4 very old physical servers to this new server. No need to HA or vmotion is necessary. We needed an inexpensive way to get rid of these old servers.

  Can someone explain to us what will be the situation if buy us the essentials license and insert it on vsphere? Esxi 4.1 vsphere will continue to operate with limited cpu core feature or it will prevent all our VMs to stop working?

  When to turn off the processor cores

  While disabling the carrots may seem paradoxical to provide superior performance, there are at least three situations in which the disabling processor cores may be beneficial.

  My group is looking to upgrade our ESXi (free) installation to vSphere Essentials. Before do us, I have a few questions (I tried calling & commercial VMWare email, but no one seems to be there):

  1. We have an existing ESXi to install, and we'll add a 2nd machine to host VMs can I use vCenter (from Essentials) to manage two computers?

  2. Requirements for vCenter status she has 2 CPUs, 4 GB of memory and 3 GB of disk space for up to 50 guests. However, we have 2 guests and we add a 3rd host is far in the future (in years).   I need help to make a decision here.  The environment is both physical server (2 CPU each) and they run out of a small local SAN.  I was going to get Essentials more but the problem is that it is around $ 5500 per server physical and that is almost as expensive as the server.  I'm looking for alternatives and I fell on VSphere Standard edition.  Although Essentials Plus has all the Bell and whistle I am looking for, but we can live with HA and vMotion.  The truth is that I can live with 15 minutes of downtime, I just need to know if I should get VSphere Standard edition or even Essentials that I have the opportunity to make a VM if I experience hardware failure?  Thank you in advance.

  We evaluated VMware vSphere to build an environment very small test & dev to work. Since vSphere worked well during our assessment, we will buy vSphere licenses.

  We only need to operate a single ESXi host and we don't much care our virtual machines because they are used for testing only. Thus, we don't need features such as vMotion.

  However, take us pictures and we depend on the vSphere API, because we use pyVmomi to administer our virtual machines.

  Because we only run an ESXi host, need for API vSphere vCenter but did not need features such as vMotion, I think that the Kit Essentials fits our needs. But I'm not sure it provides the vSphere API. If anyone can confirm?

  There is no difference between the installation media... the same ISO can be used for all editions of vSphere/vCenter.

  I'm running the free VSphere hypervisor and the vSphere Client. It seems that there are a ton of limitations in the free version. So far, I stumbled upon:

  (1) failed to move a virtual machine from one storage location to another

  (2) unable to set "Promiscuous" mode on a network adapter

  The list of documents things which should be available in the client, but did not exist (for example, the tabs together or options). For me it will be continue to occur as I continue to implement my VM.

  
  I work in a small business environment, but still have needs of which is apparently offered in some of the other products (for example. VMotion, VCenter?). But I use only two virtual machines on a single server with 1 CPU and that's all that I will probably have need for a while. Is there a way that I can know what are the technical limitations?   It runs vCenter but with a different license. With Essentials (more), you get 2 licenses:

  -> 5 vsphere Essentials (more) operating licence (3 guests) on the host

  -> vCenter Server Foundation (host 3) license for the vCenter Server

  So, get hold of the other licence and you will see that it works.
