It is the thing of most frustrating I've ever lived and I can't do it in recovery unless its connected to the computer. I tried pressing the home key, which starts just the iPad as usual, as soon as I fix the cord. Also, I don't know what version of the software is (I guess 7 since he never really used) - apparently different versions of the software have different recovery quirks.
