Linked clones and several subnets / VLAN

Hey all,.

In an environment with thousands of VMS, there at - it a better practical method to deal with the fact that some of the clones will be on different subnets or VLANS?

For example, imagine 500 clients need to be on a separate network other clones.

  • Creation of another master VM model would cause more costs general administrative (maintenance of multiple masters)
  • Manually move the special 500 VMS to their own network would be ok, but it would be lost during a refresh/rebuild because the master is always on the main network.

From what I've read so far, the best thing to do is a powershell script to change the special virtual machine VIRTUAL LAN after each refresh/redial.

I wanted to ask you, if there was a best practice for this problem in large environments.

Thank you
Drew

I think that it is an area where the view really fails and should probably be a feature request for future versions.   I didn't know the established practice of the best, but I would probably lean towards the powershell script to make the changes as the easiest to maintain and operate.

  • Problem with the floating linked clones and Persona

    Hello

    We run a build view Horizon 6.2.0 - 3005368.

Just improved our VMware environment to 6.2 and installing an APEX 2800 PCoIP card on our guests.

I had a pool of office dedicated clone bound for users.

Now, I made a new image of master and made a new Automated Desktop Pool pool who are floating clone related.

With the dedicated bound vmis, we place disc profiles of users etc are located.

With the new pool, I'll use Persona. I followed this guide - http://terenceluk.blogspot.no/2012/10/configuring-roaming-profiles-with.html?showComment=1445933020356 and it works very well indeed, almost.

For users of a trial, I can see that if something I save it to the desktop, it will be saved on the server of file \\fileserver\redirected$\%username%\Desktop

When I use my user and try to even something on the desktop - it c:\%username%\Desktop

I tried to reset, remove my user etc., but it's not. All the settings I made in the GPO - Computer Configuration-> administration-> classic administrative templates (ADM) models-> Configuration of the VMware View Agent-> Persona

    Management-> Folder Redirection

But my users settings are only "local".

    How is it?

This can be caused by an incorrect action or NTFS permissions on the redirection of folder/persona.

She is also due if your user account has a profile on the parent whose linked clone desktops are created.

  • Linked Clones and snapshots - which can be removed and when?

    Hello

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I'm new to the linked clones.

I was able to create clones related win2k8r2 invited.  Everything seems to work ok.  However, once a linked clone is created, is it still necessary to keep the parent snapshot?  That is to say, snapshot of the parent is necessary after related cloning?

    My env:

    VMware ESXi 4.1.0 build-433742

    VMware vSphere PowerCLI 4.1 build 332441 U1

    Thank you

    T

It must be remembered that a clone is based on the parent machine and a snapshot that you see in the server view.  Multiple snapshots can be consolidated or "rolled up", but depends on the clone.  The parent can put off when the do not need to save on resources in your environment, because that's what the replica is for.  I do not agree with Andre and suggest that you keep the snapshot that you clones are configured to use, with the exception on the consolidation of old clichés.

  • Linked Clones and SCSI controller

I created an automated linked clone pool that points to a virtual machine Windows XP parent. I used the parallel LSI Logic Controller and the value of the SCSI disk (0:0). The problem is, after the pool is created, when the user connects, they invited to a username and password with this message "you must be member of the Administrators group on this computer to install this equipment. SCSI controller.

I don't do our domain users members of the local Administrators group, so this creates a big problem.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you

    Please perform following steps.

    -----------------------------------------

    • Create a new virtual machine with custom SCSI controller. (Keep floppy drive configuration)
    • Extract the downloaded driver symmpi_wXP_1201800.zip (version 1.28.03)
    • The driver disk image can be by editing the VM, floppy.
    • Start the installation of Windows XP, press F6 when request and then point to the driver on the floppy drive
    • Continue and finish the installation.
    • Now to use this virtual machine as a VM parent, and it should solve your problem
  • On vSphere Linked Clone and Lab Manager 4

    Hello

In the Lab Manager Installation and Upgrade guide, there is a sentence saying: "Lab Manager is not compatible VMware Fault Tolerance (FT) or clones linked vSphere.".

My question is: "what is a vSphere Linked Clone? Is is distinguished by a Clone of VMware? Because as far as I am concerned, the linked cloning technology came from Lab Manager right?

    Thank you!

Welcoem to the Forums - Yes TI a vSphere Linked Clone is different from that in Lab Manager Linked Clone but unserlying technology is the same - the difference is whtechnology manages the linked clone - vSphere is handled only by the vSphere environment while a cloned associated Lab Manager is managed by you are your Lab Manager environment.

  • View of VM, linked Clones and Thinapp to a group of users?

In our configuration of the display, I have a pool of 80 people, some users have asked MS Visio.

I created a package of visio and wanted to deploy to a group of users, but I can only assign to a pool.

Is it possible so I can assign MS Visio only to a certain (AD) Group of people without having to create an additional pool?

For another application, I use the security feature in the application thinapped, which do not allow users to start the program and again reports an error message. It does not work with visio propperly: a user with visio can open files visio very well with the editor, a user without visio should get the (internet Explorer) visio Viewer, but the application is launched instead (which restores the safety message and the user cannot view the visio file).

In theory if you added it to a pool only people within the security group would be able to access.   You can also use a login script register which means that it could only be saved for those who can visit his profile.    See the link below for example sript login.

What practices of patching are used?

If you use linked clone you way the main image, not the desktop images.

Power on the mask, path, clipping, create a new snapshot.

Then (with View Manager Administration) redial your pool with the new snapshot.

  • Cannot expand the hard drive of a virtual computer that is a linked clone.

I have a virtual machine that is a linked another clone.

I did a lot of development and changes to the linked clone, and now ran out of disk space.

Now I want to extend the drive, but I get this error:

"Disks of virtual machines that are linked clones cannot be extended.

So I then try to extend the drive of the virtual machine that he was cloned from:

"Disks of VMS with snapshots cannot be extended. You must delete the snapshots or use VMWare vcenter converter. »

What can I do? If I remove the snapshots of the original machine, do not lose the 'link' to the linked clone? What he suggested that I use the "VMWare vcenter converter" for?

    Does anyone have a solution?

    Kind regards

Create a complete clone of the virtual machine in the current state. Which can be extended.

  • New installation of 6.1 of the Horizon. It is normal that provisioning linked clones will take a lot of time?

    Hello

First, I will describe my setup:

1 Management Server: Dell PowerEdge R730 48 cores, 2.5 Ghz with 9 drive HARD 300 GB SAS 15 K (RAID 5) and 256 GB of RAM

    2 hosts VDI server: Dell PowerEdge R730 48 cores, 2.5 Ghz with 9 drive HARD 300 GB SAS 15 K (RAID 5) + 1 SSD 200 GB, 256 GB of RAM, 2 K1 grid cards

1 unit number logic on a Dell Equallogic PS6110X (750 GB) where I put the masters.

    1 switch Dell N4032F (10 GB)

All the server has 4 10 GB ports configured with NPAR (so, I have virtual network card of 6 x 10 GB for storage and 6 virtual network adapter for the network of the VM) and 2-port 1 GB for the management.

My master: Windows 7 SP1 x 86 optimized with 24 GB HDD Thin-Provisionned (2 vCPU 2 GB of RAM, 3 VMXNET network Card). There is no application has added to this master.

I can't ask the Microsoft VMXNET 3 fix because it is said that this patch is not applicable.

I have no VSAN because that only 2 VDI hosts, so I set up my stock for each guest with local storage for the linked clones and SSD local for the replica.

When I run the provisioning of the office pool (17 VM):

The clone of the replica (Equallogic == > local SSD) aura 2'30 "... It's good for me (113 MB / s... the Equallogic is also used for another another LUN storage server)

But the rest of the entire operation completes the provisioning will take 40'.

More than 50% of carrots is around 100% of the CPU on the host.

I tried to change my (9 disc hard + 1 spare) RAID5 to RAID10 (10 HDD). It will take 50'.

And, when all of the operations are completed. I have 2 or 3 VM with the message: Agent unreachable and 1 or 2 crashes on the provisioning.

One recompose your desktop one VM will take about 1'30.

My question: it is normal that commissioning will take so much time?

And another question: when I'm connected to a virtual desktop computer with customer Horizon during a pool commissioning, the freezing of the VM or I can't just plug. Although I Office ready. And sometimes, vCenter client will freeze to a large number of seconds during deployment

    Have someone idea?

PS: Sorry for my approximate English ;-)

Solution: I replaced the lsi_mr3 of storage vmware with the driver megaraid_perc9 driver.

Thanks to ddewire for his help.

  • Linked clone is not the deletion of the Horizon view administrator

I am trying to remove a linked clone (and pool that linked clone). However, he advised that is the removal of more than 12 hours. I think that the problem is that someone has tried to connect to this virtual machine before fully completing commissioning. The only other VM in the pool view Horizon has deleted without argument. Is there another way to remove this virtual machine?

  • Question about moving linked clones

I have a question about moving around related clones. Here is the configuration:

PC running 7 Workstation and has an image of Windows XP existing on this subject.

PC B 7 Workstation is running and also has its own image of Windows XP on it.

I create a clone linked image on the PC to XP and create another clone bound B PC XP image that is out there.

Now, I know that as long as the linked clones can access their parents, they will work very well. My question is, how is it that when I Exchange clones related - i.e. copy clone related, I did on the PC and put it on the PC B and copy the linked clone, I made on PC B and move it to PC A - how to make these two linked clones still work fine? They connect to a parent, but not the parent of origin where they have been cloned. It is tested and working 100% with absolutely no problems or problems at all. Can someone explain this to me please? Thank you!

Can you please tell me what it means CID?

Each virtual disk (basic and Flash disks disks) has a unique identifier (CID). A virtual disk of the snapshot also contains information on the CID to his record parent (parentCID) to ensure that the drive chain is consistent.

What happens if you work with a linked clone and let's say in this XP image, you install a program...

A linked clone is equal to a snapshot. Once you create a snapshot, all changes are written to the instant vmdk file and the parent remains intact vmdk file. As long as you provide the same disk parent a clone or snapshot, you can copy it as you like and the newly installed applications will appear because they are actually stored in the instant vmdk...

See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1015180 for more details on the functioning of the snapshots
