Little memory, no size of swap file

I have 4 GB of ram but computer says low in memory. I went into the properties of the system, the performance options, virtual memory, and I have no paging file size (none) I tried the size of the managed system and size custom, defined, and restarted. no result yet of a memory. any ideas?

  • Swap file / virtual memory

    WIN 7

Read the reference and successful links to get my confused self on the setting of the page file / virtual memory.

Some please can you model which is best practices.

for example. can I set up a swap file on all drives, including the system disk?

    Craig,

When you configure a Windows system, a managed dynamic swap file is created on the startup disk. The disadvantages are mainly two things:

    1. the fragmentation of the pagefile, reducing performance, and

    2. several requests on the same hard disk access, which reduces performance.

In general, it is better to have dedicated disks for dedicated tasks that access to each disk, so the OS on 1 disk, pagefile on another disk, support on another disk, presents a preview on another one, etc..

When you set up a new facility with newly formatted discs, I believe it is preferable to use another drive for the paging file that is static, and it's the first thing I do. This will mean that it is the first file created on the separate disk and will be located on the fastest part of the disk. Making public static, means that there will be no fragmentation.

There is a golden rule to set the size of your pagefile to about 1.5 times the physical memory, but this dating from the time when 4 GB memory was already huge. With 12 GB of memory the norm these days, it is meaningless to make the pagefile over 8 to 12 GB. This will depend on your usual workflow. If you used to have a lot of open applications, working in the shadows, AE make, SOUL a great file queue handling, editing in PR, all by building a disc in FR and switching back and forth between the AU and PR, all at the same time, you should probably increase this figure.

IMO, it is not advantageous to use of swap files on multiple disks. In my case, with 12 G of memory, I use a swap file static single of 8 G on a raid0 of two disks. I never needed more than about 4 G max of this space.

  • vSphere ESXi - location of the VM swap file - filling dedicated LUN

    Hello

Just picked up a great vSphere environment of the Admin who wrote nothing down. It has configured all VM paging files to be placed on a dedicated LUN, that LUN fills up now. So if I want to put the VM swap with the virtual machine files other files I need to edit [and to connect to each host], but what would be the effect on the direct environment?

all the vm must be restarted?

and of course, that I'll need to map the size of swap file to VMDK location to make sure I didn't accidentally filling the virtual computer production LUNS.

    Thank you.

If you change the location of the swap file, vm may require reboot.

  • I use Thunderbird on multiple computers to the same gmail account but I have a laptop with little memory, so I need this laptop only to download a few files

I use Thunderbird on multiple computers to the same gmail account. I have a small laptop with very little memory and it runs out of disk space when it downloads all my folders. I would only download some of my file on the laptop, but keep all the folder on my other computers because they do not have problems with disk space. When I unsubscribe records in 'manage folder subscriptions' then he cancels his subscription on all my computers, not just the laptop. When I go to 'Properties' on the folder and sets 'retention individual police' these settings are not applied at all. What can I do?

All of the messages in each folder will appear in your message list. But this does not mean all the bodies of messages are downloaded, if you have properly configured the parameters of the disk. If what I described above stuck in your settings then Message body should be downloaded only 'on demand' when you click on each message.

To confirm this install the addon glodaquilla, which has a column "on the disk" that indicates if a message is on the disk. If you want, after you have installed the addon set Thunderbird to work offline, so it does not download message body when you click in the list of messages.

  • Computer configuration virtual for SRM - files from memory Swap file/Virtual - best practice replication?

Hello, I am very new to the model DR VMWare and have a few persistent questinos.

What is the recommended best practice re: virtual computers invited windows and virtual memory files.  I think it would be unnecessary to replicate these changing data on the DR site.  I have several virtual machines with 6-8gig memory and I'm just wondering how can I isolate the ESX memory swap files and virtual memory in Windows feedback, so they get not replicated on the Dr site as often as changing os/data.  If it's even necessary to replicate.

We use vspere vcenter 4.1 related modes, RS 4.1 the two on-site Cellera NX4 ReplicatorV2.

I wonder if I can install the files of pages to be in a condition NOT replicated file system or a file system which is the only value replicates every 24 hours, or once a week.

My reasoning here is.  Once the file is there, the operating system really cares about the changes in this file and dumps windows virtual memory on a restart, as well as the .vswp file.

what I mean is built on a virtual disk full and placing the windows file on this virtual disk to Exchange.  This virtual disk could exist in a data store hosted on a celerra file system that does not get repeated as frequently as data/OS file systems.

or am I completely off base here.

I think that if you tried to reproduce these files and maintain a sync time minute 10, you would need a ton of bandwidth.

any suggestions or recommendations or even pointers to Articles/items worth points = D.

    Thanks for your time.

Given that the configuration is made at the level of the cluster and has no impact on the SRM, replication is not a factor.  Don't forget, not to replicate the LUNS with the swap, just files have a LUN configuration on the side of recovery as well and have this defined cluster Exchange files.  Also, on the virtual machine critical we define reservations memory so the pagefile is not a factor at all.

    Kind regards...

As noted by A.P. the 1.5 x that RAM is really just an arbitrary number someone at Microsoft came at a time with and then walked into best practices with no real valid reason.

However, it could be a few things to consider:

Leave for the managed system is the easiest way, but could lead to a greater fragmentation of your C: drive.

If the definition of a fixed size you should really consider to approve how much space you like Windows to be able to push in the pagefile with an internal memory. Usually if the machine Windows have a decent amount of RAM and page file usage is quite low.

If adding an another virtual hard disk to the virtual computer and put the pagefile.sys on which you have a little more complex configuration, but could achieve savings if possible to exclude that drive in your backup tool and replication VM settings (if used). You could also possible to put all the files of comments VM on a sort of thin provisioned LUNS/NFS because it consumes a lot of space, but be used very little.

  • Linux swap file

    Hello

someone knows the recommendations pour configuration the swapfiles for Linux servers on an ESX environment to avoid the double permutation or least have the optimum configuration?

    Thank you

    David

    Hello to you,

Usually it is recommended to have 1.5 to 2 times in Exchange the memory size up to ' to 2 GB max.

But it is not always necessary.  We remind that the swap file is used unless it is out of memory.  So if is certain that he won't miss memory, can put less.

In addition, in a machine virtual is much easier to add memory ram on a server, so it can afford a little less swap.  With Vsphere 4, we can even add memory in stop the virtual machine.

In addition, needed it is extremely easy to add the swap on a virtual server, come in 3 orders.

When the double swap, I not sure what you mean.  Is that what you're talking about because of missing memory in the party machine and the ESX Server?

    I hope this helps you.

  • Windows 7 does not take into account swap file settings

I have Windows 7 Professional 64 bit installed on a system with a mirrored system disk and two disks no mirroring, including a SSD drive which is configured with ReadyBoost. Because mirroring is to the integrity of the data, and has a performance cost associated with it, I don't want any file on my system disk. Instead, I want that page files on non mirrored disks.

So I use computer-> properties and go to the "advanced system settings" to bring up the System Properties dialog box. I click on the "Advanced" tab and in the 'Performance' section, click on 'Settings' to bring up the "Performance Options" dialog box Then I click the "Advanced" tab and in the "Virtual memory" section, click on 'Change' to bring up the dialog box 'virtual memory '. Here, it lists the drive letters and for each drive paging file options.

I put the SSD (:)) has 'Custom size' with ' Initial size (MB): ' as 24576 and ' size maximum (MB): ' as 24576, click on 'Set'. "" "")

I put the other disk not mirrored (b) 'Custom size' with ' Initial size (MB): ' as 24576 and ' size maximum (MB): ' as 24576, click on 'Set'.»»» "

I put the system disk (c :)) "No paging file" and click "Set".) I also tried setting the system drive (c :)) "Minimum allowed" value of 16 MB (size initial and maximum size).)

I get the warnings appropriate, if I didn't put "No paging file" and accept the consequences. If I put the pagefile to 16 MB on the system drive, I don't get a warning of not having a swap file.

I reboot, to let the new settings take effect. When the system is in place, if I put "No paging file" on the system drive, Windows tells me that it has created a pagefile on the system drive, and the file is approximately the same size as the physical memory, i.e. 12 G and the "Performance Options" Advanced tab reports that "the file size for all readers of Total paging" is 12288MB.

If, instead, I put the system drive for the authorized minimum 16 MB paging file, Advanced tab "Performance Options" reports "Total paging file for all readers size" is 16 MB.

In any situation he always respects the settings specified in the dialog virtual memory for other readers.

I checked that 'HKLM\SYSTEM\CurentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PageFileOnOsVolume' is set to 0, and 'HKLM\SYSTEM\CurentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\TempPageFile' does not exist OR has been set to 0 (Windows always change this parameter to 1 if I chose "No paging file" for the system volume.) So, I change it to 0, reboot and Windows it passes 1 ad creates the 12288 MB pagefile on the system volume).

I disabled BitLocker - it does not start.

I don't really know what hoops I have to pass through to convince Windows to use the swap file configuration that I specify. At the very least, if I put in place minimum swap file on the system drive, to avoid the essential consequences pagination on a mirrored disk performance and to prevent Windows from automatically creating the 12 G pagefile on the system drive, I expect that the other swap files on non mirrored disks will be used by the system , but dialogue "Performance Options" it is clear that single paging file in use is the one on the system volume - exactly what I don't want.

Can you please tell me how to get Windows to my settings?

  • Cache host / location of the Swap file

I thought to move the files to a local SSD disk swap. My hosts are not really short memory, that I was just trying to save space on the SAN by moving Exchange out of the data store files. Is there a place any allowing the host Cache option if I move to the local SSD disk swap files?

    Evening,

    A few points to consider:

When you say that the swap files do you have the virtual machine swap or Exchange against guests.  I would advise against the local Exchange against guests being on ssd for reasons HA.

If you mean that the virtual machine swap file, this file is created when the virtual machine is running and is the size of the virtual memory of the virtual machine - any booking.  Put this file on ssd local has two benefits:

    1. swap because of the speed speed local ssd

    2. do not store your san (a requirement of your original question)

Now, please keep in mind that this file is only used during the excessive demands of memory operations.  So, if you have zero on commit on the memory, they will never be used #1 do not really have an advantage.  If you find yourself with free' place san ing.  If it is essential for you, then of course do and by all means turn the swap feature to the host cache.  (Good article on it here http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2011/08/18/swap-to-host-cache-aka-swap-to-ssd/)  If you have ssd and you want to see the performance of your SSD where no more if hire you may just want to wait for 5.5 and use vSphere Flash Read Cache (article here that & #8217; s new in vSphere 5.5 storage |) VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs)

Please let me know if that answers your question.

    Thank you

  • Swap file

Hello, I have a question for exchanging files. If I create a virtual machine with 1vcpu, 2 GB of ram and does not use a resource pool, then I see that my swap file is 2 GB in size. I understand that, so far. If I use a reservation of memory 1 GB, my swap will be 1 GB. Understand the part as well. I don't understand, when this file will be used? I read a few links on the web, and I see that this has nothing to do with the windows pagefile. If I have a VM with 1 GB of vram and all that 1 GB is used, I think windows will start to write the swap file, which will kill performance. Unless I'm wrong and it is during this swap file is used?

    Any help?

    MN

There are three steps the vmkernel uses in managing and releasing memory.

    1. Transparent Page Sharing - the vmkernel is aware of all the pages are stored by the VMs - when it identifies identical pages it will store both read-only memory and when a change needs to be done will be copied into its own space in memroy - what is completely transparent to the operating system do you have in the virtual machine
    2. Balloon pilot - this is the driver which is installed with the VMware tools and typically is inactive - it is operated by the vmkernel when the ESXi host runs hsort physical memory - he began claiming the memory in the virtual memory of VMs force the operating system to continue its own Exchange/swap file space.
    3. by vm vmkernel swap file - what you're asking-if the vmkernel does not enough memory to satisfy your VMs need it begins to swap pages of memory to the swap space / as you pointed out it is independent of the guest operating system virtual memory and is equal to the amount of memory assigned to the virtual machine and the reserve of memory of the VMS - fi that everything works as designed Yes virtual machine will already use virtual memory OS comments
