Loss repeated drive letter assignment to restart

Whenever I reboot, one of my hard disks loses its drive letter assignment and must be reassigned in Control Panel > administrative tools > computer management > storage > disk management.

I have recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate x 64. I did not have this problem with the same hardware configuration and Vista Ultimate x 64.

Configuration:

2 SATA drives of 250 GB in RAID 0, which contains the Windows system directory and is assigned C:
1 1.5 to SATA drive assigned D:
1 DVD player, received the letter of drive E:

After each restart, D: loses its drive letter assignment. I have him assigning other drive (for example, H: or b or G :) letters. No drive letter assigned works.

I'm open to any solution, including the execution of a script at startup if necessary or editing the registry. Please let me know what are my options.

Thank you.

I "SOLVED IT!

1.5 years later, 1 motherboard change, contacting M$, seagate, gigabyte and nvidia and noone would help!

My solution:
Open run and type 'Diskpart '.
Type "LIST VOLUME"
Volume number of witch notes that you autoassign at startup

Create a text file on C:\ named: diskpart.txt
Put this in the text file:
Select the volume "disc number.
assign letter = "letter to assign the drive.
(in the "" brackets, entry of your stuff, as you don't need the "")

Open notepad run and type
Put this in:
DiskPart /s c:/diskpart.txt
Click file > save as...
locate C:\ and change the name of the file to "diskpart.bat" then save as type to change: for all files, and then tap Save

Now, go into task scheduler in the Admin section on the control panel.
Create a new folder in the folder 'Windows' void 'Diskpart '.
Make a right-click the folder 'Diskpart '.
Click on "create basic task...". »
the name "Diskpart", then click on "next >".
Select "Start the computer" click on "next >".
Select "Start a program" click on "next >".
Click "Browse...". »
Select the file 'Diskpart.bat' you have saved on C:\, click on "next >".
Select 'Open this task properties dialog box when I cliquerai finish' click 'Finish '.
Properties should come now, select 'run with highest privileges '.
Click on 'OK '.

And now you're done!
SRY for the noobguide ^^

Thanks Micro$ oft for not solving this problem, now I wish I had all the time back I spent on doing so manually!

  • How can I change the drive letter assigned to the partition of 'winretools' on a laptop Win 8?

I'm just going through the process to customize a new Inspiron 14z with Windows 8. The only thing that left me speechless are all provided partitions installed on drive, thanks to a combination of everything be different on Win8, Dell make their own way and GPT formatting.  Generally, I would like to know what the devil all these partitions are for, but it is fine if it will be a slow learning process.  More precisely and immediately, I need to change the drive letter assigned to the partition of 'WINRETOOLS '.  Currently it is D:, and the problem is that 10 years from now, I'm using as my data partition D: and a number of applications, configurations, settings, etc. assume that all my files are on D:.  For example, by having all my music on D:, I can sync iTunes library and preference between machines and all results files and playlists is from a machine to another.  Same thing for my photos.  Same for a bunch of utilities like FTP consoles, sync utilities...

In an earlier version of Windows, I would just go into management drives, right click on the partition in question, assign a different drive letter and work done.  On my machine, the WINRETOOL 2 GB partition shows not even as having a drive letter in disk management, despite the fact that it is D: in Win Explorer.  In addition, only the right click option is 'help '.  I took this option, and, despite its aspirations, it is not useful.

How can I change this drive letter to something else?  WINRETOOLS should even have a drive letter in Explorer (some messages that I've seen indicates that it must be hidden)?  If I change the drive letter, which will break its function, whatever it is?

    ....

My machine has a 500 GB of rotating disk that has all of the above partitions.  I shrunk the 80 GB C: partition, to create a data partition.  I've not yet formatted the unallocated space I want to solve this WINRETOOLS thing first.  Finally, there is a 32 GB of SSD that I put in place as a cache of the Intel Smart Response, and it is no longer visible to the operating system.

At the command prompt, type the following and press "enter":

    Close the command prompt.

Drive D: letter should now be available and not used.

  • Secondary hard drive receives the drive letter assigned to the start-up

I have recently formatted my secondary hard drive, which had been sitting in my empty PC and do nothing for a while, to function as a music folder. The problem I have is that every time you start that I have to manually assign the drive letter, Windows does not automatically. I tried to reformat the hard disk, but it does not solve the problem. In addition, by train to perform a bugcheck gives an error indicating the check cannot be completed. Personally, I have no idea how to solve this problem, and I have not found anyone with the same issue.

    Hi Revolvist,

There is a possibility that the second hard disk is defective or damaged.

If the second hard disk is a separate hard drive, I suggest you disconnect the drive from the computer (if possible) and connect to another computer and check if the problem persists.

  • My PC drive letter assignment is incorrect.

I have a HP Pavilion a230n w/Windows XP Home Edition, SP3 & IE 7. I tried to find why I can't burn a CD/DVD, when I noticed that the designations of drive letter on my secondary internal drive would be ', the CD/DVD burner and CD-rom have changed. How can I fix it?

    Hi Carolina,.
Well, there is a lot of information here so I'll do my best to sort it out.

You say in your first post that you have a secondary internal drive that has been designated as the "D" HOWEVER, which was actually just a Partition of the 'C' drive and not a disc correct full-fledged?

If this is the case, then my suggestion is to change the drive letters and just create the primary partition as "D" as is was before. However, having 2 discs called 'J' is a problem.
You say that it is an external drive. What is it? It is a storage device, or just another piece of hardware that the computer considers as a drive?

In addition, the actual error codes you get will be a world of help to understand what actually causes the errors. So, if you would, please copy these errors and post them here. Who's going to tell us at least in the right direction.

I am also curious to know what program you use to burn CDs.

As to the question Word Perfect - hardware forum and drivers is not really the right place to ask but I think there's an easy solution. Indeed, Word Perfect, itself may contain a help section or a tutorial for you to see. Looks like you just to close a toolbar. I'm looking for more information on exactly how this functions model of the device when it is connected to a computer - I would like to be able to connect with the usb cable and the camera memory stick appears as a removable drive with a drive letter assigned in Windows. I do not use any software to transfer pictures off the camera - want to just drag - move in Windows. This model camera offers this feature?

Set the parameters of the camera to a single LUN and USB connect to mass storage. To define, access the settings menu of the camera. After setting the camera, connect the camera to your computer. Go to the computer, search for devices with removable storage. Look for the drive where the camera is connected. If you see the DCIM folder, that's all.

  • SanDisk Ultra Drive Letter missing problem

Did a search but don't seem to find something that fits to my problem. I have several Sandisk Ultra USB flash drives, for most versions of 16 GB with a 32 GB version and for some strange reason, whenever I have insert in a Windows computer (Windows 7 and Windows 10) they fail to come up with a drive letter. Instead, I have to go to computer management > disk management > change drive letter and paths and assign a (usually E) drive letter to the Ultra drive to be install in Windows every time.

I have many other readers flash including Sandisk Cruzers who do not exhibit this problem. There is always a drive letter assigned whenever they are inserted into a Windows computer.

Is there a cause for this problem?

Is there one alternative to having to assign a drive letter to each time I insert the Ultra flash player?

    Ed_P wrote:

Assignment of the different drive letters to each different drive, IE the more different 16 GB for the 32 GB ones, should help. I have some of my own assigned to S: and T: to deviate the other random readers.

Thanks for the suggestion. Tried that on the Ultra drive (five of them) and it did not work. Each of them has been assigned their own drive letter but would not come up with a drive letter, so that other readers not Ultra would rise with the drive letters.

What seemed to have worked was to access the 'diskpart' execute the command, and then run the following command: automount enable

Then when the Ultra drives were inserted, they came up with a drive letter from the first drive letter not in use on the system.

    Hi Roland Bhatt,.

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Answers.

Try to use diskpart to assign a drive letter to the drive.

    1. on the start Orb > type diskpart.

2 - Click on diskpart in the above results > click Run as administrator.

    3. after diskpart loads type list volume, press on enter.

You should notice that you can see your partition you use for your data, it should not not have a drive letter assigned to it.

    4. type select volume 6 (replace 6 with the number of the volume assigned to the partition in question).

    5. type assign letter Z (replace Z with the letter you want to assign).

When you look in the computer, you should be able to see your score.

  • Can I connect external drives, flash sticks, cards, etc. to a specific drive letter?

Hello. My question is for Windows Vista, Xp and Win7. I have Vista and XP.

I was wondering if I can assign (or delete the assignment) a drive letter to the external hard drive. I have a laptop and that not always you wanted to plug a certain external drive first, and everytime I turn on the unit. If I can assign a drive letter - I wanted to have it exclusively for some external hard drives, flash sticks, cards, etc. If possible. And Cancel if something breaks or is replaced, etc.

Can I do this with my office also (this is the XP one)?

Can it confuse the system? What updates or anything like that? What happens if I change the associated device?

Also would it help if I run specific programmes on a device external usb, but I am currently not.

Assuming this works: I can leave something assigned to the drive letter K and whatever it is I plugged in any OS: nothing runs the K drive unless it is the specific device, even if not assigned devices...? Those who can jump to L or D - J, etc.?

    Thank you.

Assignment of drive letters is pretty easy - use tool (diskmgmt.msc) disk management to assign letters.  Insert the disk or device, run the disk management tool, find the drive or device, right click and select 'Change Drive Letter and paths', click the 'Edit' button and assign the drive letter you want.  Not the drive letter assignment is made by inserting the device and using the button 'delete '.  I don't know of a way to remove a drive letter assignment, if the device is missing or damaged /-maybe someone else can chime with this knowledge.

  • Cannot change drive letter external (Windows Vista)

I connected an external hard drive to my laptop (3.5 "), but it can not display in Windows Explorer.
I have Windows Vista installed on my laptop

The external hard drive is recognized in disk management, appears in good health, but has no drive letter assigned.
When I want to change the drive letter, this and every other option is grayed out, except the option 'Delete Partition '.

All the world is facing this problem before?

    Thank you

    Nielke

    Hi Nielke,

I'm sorry to know that you still have the problem.

You can try plugging the external drive to another PC to see if the device works it.

If it is detected on another PC, you will need to take backup of the data on the external hard drive and try to format the drive by following the steps mentioned above to the PC where it detects.

After formatting the drive, check to see if it detects is to change the drive letter.

    Hope this information is useful.
