Lost messages received a year in Outlook Express 6

Today, when I used Outlook Express 6, I clicked on the send/receive button, in the dialog display of tasks being done, I received a message not connected and when I tried to leave Outlook Express, I had a mistake do not respond so I used to put Task Manager to end the program.  When I reopened Outlook Express, messages of the Inbox for last year were missing.  I have not compacted in a long time so there is no .bak files in the Recycle Bin.  Is it possible for me to get these messages? I don't see any other file Inbox differently than in the storage folder. Help!

Two reasons the most common for what you describe is disruption of the compacting process, (never touch anything until it's finished), or bloated folders. More about that below.

Why OE insists on compacting folders when I close it? :
http://www.insideoe.com/FAQs/why.htm#compact

Why mail disappears:
http://www.insideoe.com/problems/bugs.htm#mailgone

Recovery methods:

If you use XP/SP2 or SP3, and are fully patched, then you should have a backup of your dbx in the bin files (or possibly the message store), copied as bak files.

To restore a folder bak on the message store folder, first find the location of the message store.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

In Windows XP, the .dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in the Solution Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder options | View.

Close OE and in Windows Explorer, click on the dbx to the file missing or empty file, then drag it to the desktop. It can be deleted later once you have successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the message store.

Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the * exact * same name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. For example: If the file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named saved. Open the new folder, and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty, continue to the next step.

First of all, check if there is a bak file already in the message. If there is, and you have removed the dbx file, go ahead and rename it in dbx.

If it is not already in the message, open the trash and do a right-click on the file bak for the folder in question and click on restore. Open the message store up and replace the .bak by .dbx file extension. Close the message store and open OE. Messages must be in the folder.

If messages are restored successfully, you can go ahead and delete the old dbx file that you moved to the desktop.

If you don't have bak copies of your files dbx, then:

DBXpress run in extract disc Mode is the best chance to recover messages:
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/default.aspx

And see:

http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4

A general warning to help avoid this in the future:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They finally are damaged. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.

Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages. Your up-to-date A / V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more information, see:

    Outlook Express problems

    I can't send or receive e-mails via Outlook Express.

    I can access through my ISP webmail.

    In short and in laymans terms (I'm not a tech wiz) the automatic link between my ISP and Outlook Express does not work.

    I also lost all my emails in the Inbox.

    I run a Windows XP Home Edition.

    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Search for interference antivirus (see www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3).  Then go to file | Identities and establish a new identity.  Add your email account and see if it works very well.  If so, you can go to file | Import | Messages to bring them from the old identity.

    Then, if you lost messages, check the trash and the message of the old identity store bak files that are backups of dbx files that you can retrieve (see point 2 on the page above).  If there is no bak file, then my DBXpress program (www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/) has an excerpt from disc feature that will analyze the entire hard drive for messages and if they are still there, it will recover them.

    You may have a damaged identity especially if it's the default main identity. File | Identities | Add the new identity. Create a new one and try it. If all goes well, you can import your messages and address book from the old identity and delete it.

    Note: Do not use the main word in the name of the new identity.

    This can happen only if you have a message in place rule or the sender entered blocked senders. Carefully review these two areas and any spam program, you may have.

  • Cannot receive emails through my Outlook Express 6 account all of a sudden. I have 2 computers set up with it, a Windows XP and the other Windows Vista.

    Cannot receive emails through my Outlook Express 6 account all of a sudden.  I can send messages but not receive. I removed all mail rules and blocked senders and I still cannot receive anything.  I tested it by sending a mail to it through different accounts (gmail, yahoo) so I know that there must be some messages.  I also had people reply to my email that I send to what they do, but I don't get their answers.  I have 2 computers in place, using Windows XP and the other is Windows Vista.  I've never had a problem until now. Any help?

    My server contacted me and told me to check my spam using their webmail account, because it was full.  It seems that when I used the rules of the mail I had clicked on delete from the server, just "do not download".  My spam folder was so full that I couldn't receive. Thanks for all your advice!  Mark as resolved.

  • Why not delete messages in my Inbox in Outlook Express

    Why I can no longer delete messages in my Inbox in Outlook Express, on rare occasions, I can delete message weird thre. I use IE 8.

    You have corruption of dbx files.

    Spend most of your messages out of the Inbox if you can and move the messages you want to record off deleted items, and sent items. Locate the OE message store and then close OE.

    Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

    In Windows XP, Win2K & Win2K3 the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder Options icon | Opinion, or in Windows Explorer. Tools | Folder options | View.

    With OE closed, find the Deleted Items.dbx and Sent Items.dbx files and delete them. New files will be created automatically when you open OE.

    Compact all folders as described below.

    To avoid this in the future:

    Do not archive mail in the receipt or sent items box. Create your own user-defined folders and move messages you want to put in them. Empty the deleted items folder daily. Although the dbx files have a theoretical capacity of 2 GB, I recommend all a 300 MB max for less risk of corruption.

    Information on the maximum size of the .dbx files that are used by Outlook Express:
    http://support.Microsoft.com/?kbid=903095

    After you're done, followed by compacting your folders manually while working * off * and do it often.

    Click Outlook Express at the top of the the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work offline (or double-click on work online in the status bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed.

  • Help! -I can't delete messages in my Inbox in Outlook Express 6

    Hello.
    I can't delete messages in my Inbox in Outlook Express 6. An idea

    1. move all the messages that you want to keep out of the folders Inbox, sent items and deleted items and in other local OE folders have created you for archiving (backup) of such messages.

    2. Note the location of the store of your identity (http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain).

    2B. turn on "Show hidden folders and files" via start | Control Panel | Folder options | View (see http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html).

    3. close OE.

    4. in Windows Explorer, navigate to your storage folder, find & delete the files Inbox.dbx, Outbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbxand Deleted Items.dbx.

    5 empty the trash.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    To avoid such problems in the future, comply with the following restrictions:
    N ' not use Inbox or sent items to archive messages.  Move them to local folders created for this purpose.
    -Empty the deleted items folder daily.
    -Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE while records that "work offline".  More on http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm
    -Do not cancel automatic compacting, where it would happen and do not try to close OE via Manager tasks or stop your Automatic compaction machine can take place.
    -Disable e-mail scanning in your antivirus application.  It can cause corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and offers no additional protection:
  • Why was the full Inbox folder when there is no message in the folder of outlook express?
    Original title: failure of Outlook Express
    I apologize if I am in the wrong category, but there isn't one for Outlook Express. I encountered a strange problem with OE. My client always uses OE for their emails and all of a sudden a person has lost the ability to receive emails. After some research, I found that their Inbox.dbx file exceeded the capacity of 2 GB. Juggling which corrects the problem.
    But my question is why was the folder Inbox full, when there is no message in the folder? When I opened the OE to try to resolve the problem, the Inbox was empty! Second question is how can I keep this does not happen?
    [Transferred from Internet Explorer]
    I do not use Outlook, but it has nothing to do with archiving. Only, you do not see messages once you remove them, but they are still on your drive hard until you compact.
  • Send/receive is gray in Outlook Express.
    Went to open outlook express this morning as I did for years, it is said there is some change and I need to 'import messages and contacts' or 'contacts only' etc.  I try to close it won't shut me down, says I have to decide, so I Cancel.   Box goes, I see no outlook, but the message is "Welcome to Outlook Express 6" anyway, my contacts are there, but all my Inbox, etc is empty and the send/receive is gray (as in does not).  I didn't ask for an update, don't want one - I want just that my old outlook express back and especially my messages.  I know that this is not a program purchased, but also I had not requested any change, wonder what's happening on the end of microsoft changing?
    OE got probably confused as to where was the message store.  See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4 and you will probably find the old message store that you can import.
    According to Shane, it actually open Outlook instead of OE (but you may have gotten it) so see here to make sure OE has the default value (www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspx)
    IE has nothing to do with OE in this regard. If the problem is intermittent, I suspect a problem with your modem, router or ISP. Reset the modem and the router, if you use one, and if that doesn't help, get help from Onetel on line and have them check the signal of your modem.
