My DVD RW drive (E) does not recognize or read any disk inserted.

My DVD RW drive (E) does not recognize or read any disk inserted. I have a desktop HP with Windows Vista home premium. I used to be able to play CDs & DVDs, but also to burn discs on it. Now it will not read discs program even not. This happened earlier & I never understood the problem so I just gave up. Now I need to use a program disk to use a wireless router & I can't because my reader will not read the disc. I already checked the Device Manager and it says that all drivers are at day & work properly.

Hello

Step 1: Please do all the same underneath if you did some before as is often total
a process that solves the problem.

Try this - Panel - Device Manager - CD/DVD - double click on the device - driver tab.
Click on update drivers (this will probably do nothing) - RIGHT click ON the drive - uninstall.
RESTART this will refresh the default driver stack. Even if the reader does not appear to continue
below.

Then, work your way through these - don't forget the drive might be bad, could be a coward
cable or slight corrosion on the contacts (usually for a laptop) and other issues.

Another possibility is that the cables are loose. Remove ALL power, then make sure that the cables in both

Some DVD players do not use the Windows default drivers so check with the manufacturer of system and

Step 2: You have disc problems as the CD/DVD is actually 4 discs in 1 case (CD & DVD

    Hello

The first thing that I would recommend before you do the radical and re install Windows or upgrade to Windows 7, is to make sure that you have backed up your files. Make sure that you have a separate player and follow the steps described in this article.
To be honest, it sounds like the drive has gone wrong at this stage. Normally, this sounds like it would be a driver problem, but if you have uninstalled them and are 100% sure that you have installed the good and still no joy, so I think we can exclude.
Have you tried several discs in the drive, correct? It is not just a problem with the special CD that you use right?
I would say your best bet is at this time to try another drive on the machine, especially if you do not want to go through the hassle of reinstalling Windows. You may be surprised how well they come these days. The last of them, that I bought on Amazon (I think) was a little more than $25 in the United States.

Applications, (Norton and McAfee) (including free evaluation versions are notorious for not not upgrade (or uninstalling) itself.) If NIS has been installed for 3 years, you have NIS update at least once and maybe twice (e.g., NIS 2009 > NIS 2010 > NIS 2011).

[You may want to print these instructions for reference offline. If a step said to reboot, reboot.]

    1. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

    2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

    3. After completing some you have a copy of your handy product key, uninstall all Norton software (including LiveUpdate and everything Norton Add ons) viaControl Panel | Programs | Uninstall a program (or Control Panel |) Programs and features, if you are using the classic view).

4 IMPORTANT! -Online activate Windows Firewall immediately after the restart.

NB: Now you're "working without a net": no to ANYTHING else online (e.g., navigation, reading e-mail, chat) until you have completed step #7 below!

    5. right click on the file that you saved in step #1 above, and then select run as administrator.  DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

    6. do a clean install of NIS 2011 (using your product ID, if need be) & reboot. CF. http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN

NOTE: Do NOT activate or install additional modules of Norton (for example, Norton Anti-Phishing) immediately.

    7. manually and repeatedly run LiveUpdate (Norton) until you get a prompt "no update more".

The drive itself is recognized and works very well with recovery DVD and CD-ROM.

Phone support: they had me reinstall the driver and boot from the recovery DVD. This does not solve the problem. They then said to do a system restore. Tried, but it seems that the previous restorations of system are in themselves unsuccessful and the restoration of the system that has worked has not solved the problem.

    Hello

You understand that you must specify if it is a hardware or software problem.
Unfortunately, you can find this secret only using recovery DVD (CD).
Toshiba recovery installation will define the laptop back to the factory settings. In this case you may find whether or not the CD/DVD device is defective.

If the player will not play the DVD after the reinstallation of the operating system, then chances are that it is a CD/DVD drive error.

    Hello

You mean that the CD/DVD drive is not listed in Device Manager?
You see the CD/DVD drive in BIOS?
Check this box... If the CD/DVD is not recognized in the BIOS then it means that your CD/DVD drive is dead!

But if the CD/DVD drive is listed in the BIOS, and if in Device Manager, you see only a yellow exclamation mark then I recommend to remove (uninstall) the CD/DVD drive in Device Manager and restart the laptop again.

After restarting again the CD/DVD drive must be recognized again by OS

If you are looking for a driver for ODD then I would say; Forget it!
The OS of windows already contains the driver for the CD/DVD drive and it is not necessary to install other drivers. In addition, this drivers don t exist.

  • My DVD - RW drive (E :) does not work

    Hello everyone

My DVD - RW drive (E :) has stopped working. It has stopped reading DVDs but it will play CD and CD-ROM. My drive D (CD - RW) work well and plays the CD and CD-ROM without problem.

I have a Dell Dimension DM051and Windows XP Professional SP3. The problem E drive is HL-DT-ST DVD + RW GWA4164B

I used Device Manager to try to solve the problem, but it wrongly States "this device works correctly. I tried 'Drives and troubleshooting of network adapters' but it was too 'unable to resolve your problem... " I reached the "you need to install or update a decoder?" and do not know if I have to buy a decoder from one of the Microsoft recommended "solution providers" to solve the problem or not? Are there available free patches? I downloaded the relevant E113.zip Support of Dell, but this too made no difference.

The DVD player is on the correct DVD region.

I tried Microsoft guided help clean boot, but it was "impossible to download right now" and was told to try again later.

I tried Microsoft Fixit 50027 and concluded that "media in the CD/DVD drive is not readable (HT-DT-ST DVD + RW GWA4164B) the drive is empty or the media format is not supported..." "No not fixed"

    Can anyone help?

    c. in the Hardware tab, click Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on allow.

    d. in Device Manager, expand CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives, right click on the device CD and DVD and then click on uninstall.

    e. When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click OK.

Internet research indicates that your device does only support writing CD not DVD. This is a combo DVD-ROM and CD - RW.
