  In fact, I managed to solve the problem by unplugging the player for about 10 minutes (I should have tried this first)! After that, it will work very well and I was able to access the AVI files in my laptop hard drive.

  The drive will appear in the top of the disk management window?  If so, look at the column layout, Type, file system and status.  The "file system" must be FAT or NTFS.  From your description, it appears that Windows does not recognize the partition as being to the format in a way that he can use.  You may need to delete the existing partition (attention: this will remove all files that may exist on the disk), and then create a new partition in FAT32 or NTFS format.  Advice to do this, right-click the disk, choose 'Help', then go to:
  -> How To disk management...-> manage the volumes of base-> Delete, Create, or Format.

• FireWire devices are most recognized. External hard drive and the camcorder will not connect.

  My computer no longer recognizes the firewire devices that I connect to it.  The Device Manager shows the driver 1394 work very well.  I even deleted and reinstalled Windows XP.  My external hard drive so my camcorder are more recognized when I plug them cold or hot plug.  Two of them have worked very well for more than 4 years and now for some unknown reason, that they stopped just recognized.

  There is a problem with this laptop, A350-043 running Vista Edition Windows Home Premium 64 bit, part number: PSAL6C - 04S 015

  My advice make a library of portable split is a general guide, but as such, it has all sorts of details that you may not need.

  I guess you have previously installed iTunes such as library files were in the usual place of C:\Users\ < user > \Music\iTunes but the media were on an external drive, for example in X:\ < Media folder >, and no longer have access to the old library, or are perhaps new to iTunes, then so be it you will need to start over again. If, then hold down the SHIFT key when you launch iTunes. Keep now until you see a prompt to create or choose a library. Click on create and make a new library at the root of the external drive, i.e. as X:\iTunes , where X is the drive letter of the external drive. Once this operation is complete, use Windows Explorer to move the existing media folder within the X:\iTunes\iTunes Media, rename the folder that you moved as say other media to avoid any possible confusion in the future, select the menu with Ctrl + B bar and use file > add folder to library, to import the file to other media in the library. Will everything that iTunes adds to the library be shuffled around. All that remains in the other media will be happy that iTunes does not know what to do with such incompatible media or album art carried out by Windows Media Player.
