No update will download

I am at a loss for answers here.  To make a long story short... in October 2008, I had to perform a restore of the system and then in January, I got rid of the internet... buuut, from October to January, only a few of the updates installed. Now, after 2 days of trying to at least get a update finished, I gave up. The computer, which is running Vista, end not updated. It gives me error codes different for each update has failed (well, OK, I checked that a few of them to see the errors and they were different codes). I don't know what to do about this. Should I try to restore windows again? OR just take a hammer to this thing? I lean more toward the other.  heeelllllp!

Hello mskitty,.

I suggest you use the Install Cleanup tool.  You must be logged on to Windows with a user account is an administrator on the computer to run Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.  The link below is to download the Installer Cleanup tool.

    Hello

No error codes or other details for us to work with, give your machine a melody by following these steps.

Search for malware, if necessary using the safe mode with networking.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-Windows-in-safe-mode/#Vista

    Windows Vista

    Using the F8 method:

    1. Restart your computer.
    2. When the computer starts, you will see your computer hardware are listed. When you see this information begins to tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Boot Options Advanced Windows Vista.
    3. Select the Safe Mode with networking with the arrow keys.
    4. Then press enter on your keyboard to start mode without failure of Vista.
    5. To start Windows, you'll be a typical logon screen. Connect to your computer and Vista goes into safe mode.
    6. Do whatever tasks you need and when you are done, reboot to return to normal mode.

Once in Safe Mode with network, download and run RKill.

RKill does NOT remove the malware; It stops the Malware process that gives you a chance to remove it with your security programs.

It would be a good idea to run the System File Checker tool if you have corrupted files

"How to use the System File Checker tool to fix the files on system missing or corrupted on Windows Vista or Windows 7"

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929833

Use the (SFC.exe) System File Checker tool to determine which file is causing the problem and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click principally made programs, Accessories, right-click guest, and then click run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click allow.
    2. Type the following command and press ENTER:
      sfc/scannow

The sfc/scannow command analyzes all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with appropriate Microsoft versions.

If SFC detects serious flaws, you may need to perform a repair upgrade Installation or relocation complete if you don't have a Vista DVD from Microsoft.

If you can borrow a DVD of Vista from Microsoft you save doing a reinstall full:

Download updates very well, but after that, they fail to install immediately. It seems to go so fast that he does not even try to install downloaded updates. I did everyting for repair/upgrade to update / save the components associated with the windows updates and microsoft Setup. I also deleted the cache update and downloaded fresh copies of the updates, but still no instlal. I even did a repair install on xp at a given time. The machine had a malware infection, but I healed part, including purging the master boot record and wiping the boot sector. I am really puzzled at that time and any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Go to start > run > wuaucpl.cpl > disable automatic updates > apply (if the setting is changed) > OK

There is a known issue with Windows Update that address priority before you visit Windows Update

Manually download and install the latest cumulative security update for IE8 and restart before

visit windows update via the shortened link in your Start menu.

When you have Win XP SP3 and IE8, it will be the necessary file

It often happens that the installation of SP3 will break the windows update feature by not properly installing the windows update agent.  An older version of the windows update agent can be downloaded and saved in the C directory and installed by an execution command.

Windows update agent is available during one of the linked pages

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/943144

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/946928

    Start > run > C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

In the alternative, there is a troubleshooting tool that can work to accomplish the same thing

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/949104/en-us

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/2714434/en-us

A reboot is probably a good idea after each intervention.

Now connect to windows update manually through your browser using the shortcut in the start menu link and your chances are better that it will work.

When the latest version of windows and to connect to Windows Update will detect the old version of Windows update agent installed update agent will be installed after consenting to the ActiveX installation.  It will be the first thing that happens when connecting to Windows update if things continue normally.

If there are still problems with Windows update try this utility.

It is the #25 element in the repair tool to be implemented.
