Ntuser files (3)

I need to move all the files, ntuser. MS does not allow this. What can I do now?

You ask about files named ntuser.dat ?  These are files protected by Windows, and moving or removing could make your computer stop working.  Why do you move them? Boulder computer Maven

    Hello

Whenever you create a new user or change the name user a new account is done and the rest of the old account. You can delete accounts that you use but make sure that delete you only the one don't use necessary or not is no longer.

If you want to delete, and select all the files that have long XXXXXX added to the ends and remove the files. If you are not able to delete the file, and then hide the files.

    Hello

I would backup several times using different methods like a couple of backups in the
external and backup of important data on a DVD - safety in numbers. Then re-install Windows
as he came on the system. The upgrade would be unwise and may not work with a system
    who has problems.

Your system as it is now may be fixable without reinstalling by technical support
However, a new installation should also address these issues.

  • Difficulty a user profile corrupt: impossible to copy and paste user\C:------directories and files; is locked a factor of State?

I'm trying to fix my profile by following the instructions found here. It is well written and easy to follow. Except that I can't make it work.

I copy everything except the ntuser files (do not know if they are completely copy) but when I go to the new user and click on paste, nothing happens. And when I check in a directory, say 'office,' my files aren't there.

I don't know why but quite a number of my directories is locked, including the "desktop" and many in the appdata directory. I think that there is too much to try to take ownership and change permissions; I can't do that for all of these directories.

Is there a way to get around this?

    Thanks much for any help.

What you say sounds pretty confusing. It is not consistent with my knowledge of Windows and the file/folder permissions. Here are a few options for you to consider:

  • Error when copying data from a damaged to a new profile in Windows XP user profile

    Hello

I think my user profile may be corrupted so I'm trying to create a new profile and copy the Ntuser files anywhere in the new profile by following the instructions in the Article ID: 811151.

I created two new Admin accounts loged on my old account and connected to one of the new admin accounts.

When I navigate to C : \Documents and Settings\ Old_Username  there are only two of the three files listed, NTUSER. DAT and Ntuser.dat.LOG, and both are slightly dimmed. When I copy these files and go in C : \Documents and Settings\ New_Username  I get an error saying "cannot copy NTUSER: it is used by another person or program." Close all programs that might be using the file and try again. »

My home screen tells me that only the new admin account someone connected and when I go into the Task Manager there is no process running with my where ancien_nom_utilisateur, the entire SYSTEM and the new admin account?

So, what I'm doing wrong, how to fix this and have is my Ntuser.ini file?

    Thank you very much...

Excerpt from the article below (note that it says "except the following files")...

Press on and hold down the CTRL key while you click each file and subfolder in this folder, except the following files:

    • Ntuser.dat
    • Ntuser.dat.log
    • Ntuser.ini

  • Difficulty of a corrupted user profile

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/fix-a-corrupted-user-profile

    Hello

I'm confused by some of the steps in the instructions above.  In step 7, where is says copy all the files except the file Ntuser.dat, Ntuser.dat.log and Ntuser.ini files, it means copying all the files except the files starting with Ntuser.dat, Ntuser.dat.log, etc. or just specific files?  I do not see a Ntuser.dat.log file but I have two versions of this file Ntuser.dat.log1 and Ntuser.dat.log2.  I do not see any file name or partial filename with Ntuser.ini.  I have a NTUSER file name. DAT and three other names starting with NTUSER files. DAT (one ending by .blf and two others ending with regtrans-ms).  If someone could say what files I do and do not copy?

    Thank you.

Yes, do not copy them either.

  • Copy of Documents and Settings

I have a new computer and am trying to copy my files (using an external hard drive) from my old C:\ drive to my new. Everything went very well except:

There is a folder in my "Documents and Settings" in Windows Explorer. I never use it because I have set up my own "file" based entirely on the subfolders and files in Windows Explorer. However, Windows continues to put 'stuff' in 'Documents and Settings '. When I tried to copy this folder (to be on the safe side) copy was refused due to the presence of the file NTUSER. DAT and ntuser.dat.LOG in C:\Documents and administrator and NTUSER. DAT and NTUSER. DAT. Log in to C:\Documents and Settings\Default User.

    Thus, three questions:

1 do I Documents and Settings or can I ignore this and stop trying to transfer files?

    2. If I need this file, I can just safely transfer files and folders without transferring the NTUSER files?

    3. What are these NTUSER files?

    Thank you very much.

    Walter

This is correct, the Documents & Settings folder on winxp contains user win data files.

But in your case, apparently you have stored your data elsewhere files.

Transfer data from your backup to the locations of the Win7 library (Documents, music, videos & pictures)

You can still use a folder structure in each of these places

  • the Ntuser.dat.log file size

    Hello

I found this hidden file (located in the C:\Document and Settings\MyUsername\ folder) ntuser.dat.log , keeps changing itself... (every few seconds/minutes)
its size is 1 KB to 400kb ~
    Is this normal?
I thought that he should only updated when logging in or out, am I wrong?
My OS is Windows XP SP3.

    Hello

The NTUSER. DAT is a registry file. NTUSER each user. DAT file contains the registry settings to their individual account. The Windows registry, is a "central hierarchical database" that contains information about user profiles, hardware and software contained on a computer. Does Windows constantly reference registry throughout its operation of its files. The configuration of the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" of the registry branch is supported by NTUSER the current user. DAT file.

Note: this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry. Check out the following link.

  • My NTUSER.dat file is 7 860 Ko and I don't have enough space in my C drive, I can remove it?

I have windows XP.  My hard drive is partitioned into C & D drives.  Most of my programs is on drive C and have therefore, swallowed up all the space.  I moved more data on the D drive as possible.  I was wondering what I can remove the ntuser.dat file to free up space?

No, you do not want to delete the file.

    I have a USER. 1Ko DAT file; I also have a ntuser.dat.Log1 of 45KO files. and an another ntuser.dat.Log2 1 file KB.

I think I could have done something to change the configuration of the way in which services are started to make the 45KO file.  Is this necessary?  Can I delete it?

These files are under users > default

These files are normal.    To hide, go to Control Panel > Folder Options > view and select do not show hidden files, folders, .

I mentioned services.msc and msconfig because I thought that the original poster was asking how to set up the way the services are started.  They have nothing to do with the files that you see. Steve Winograd, Microsoft MVP (Windows desktop experience)
