Number of Clusters

We are mounted to finally put VC2.5 in vSphere and I have a question about clusters in vSpere 4 update1. At this moment we have tough 6 hosts (nodes) running s 70vm each. As we look at adding additional nodes xseries or blades, should we be creating additional clusters or just keep everything in 1 cluster. Are there disadvantages of pro with who (stipulated the rate cap for vSphere cluster 8, 9 or more nodes etc.). I mean I guess my question is why create a 2nd cluster just because I add more hosts? A colleague suggests an additional cluster will alleviate cpu contention, but by adding more nodes to an existing cluster should do the same thing in my mind. Thank you for advice or links to best practices.

vmdawg

The most important thing that could lead you to a new grouping would be CPU compatibility - you have CVS available, but if it is not currently enabled will require your virtual machines stop and restart them once active CVS.

IMHO, I prefer smaller larger clusters that's easier to manage them and their virtual machines

  • number of clusters does not not in 3.5

Hi, I am running a script in a vSphere environment and when you use the following line it works fine but when I run it on 3.5 it leaves just a white. When you use the hotline in the vi toolkit, that it returns nothing suggest this indictment is not an option.

    $cluster = get-cluster

    $cluster.count

Is there another method of counting the number of clusters that would work for vSphere and 3.5.

    Thank you

    Dan

It should work on 3.5 and vSphere.

If you have only 1 cluster in your environment 3.5?

In this case Get-Cluster does not return an array, and you won't have the Count property.

    You can do

    (Get-Cluster | Measure-Object).Count

  • How many clusters manage vCenter Server?

How many clusters manage vCenter Server?

    I have 8 HOST ESXi 5.1 on a cluster.

and I want to remove 2 cluster HOST to add the VDP Advanced key and form a new group.

    can this change?

I can't found the maximum number of clusters a vCenter can handle, only the maximum number of hosts per cluster, which is 32... but altogether, you can have more than one cluster without problem.

Do a little math, since vCenter supports 1000 guests and each group can have 32 guests, maybe you can have at least 32 clusters... but not 100% on it.

  • Find virtual machines on specific clusters

There are a number of clusters were trying to move away from virtual machine.  I'd like to understand what VM (and their associated properties as $_.) Folder) that can be found on these groups.   The following code takes a long time to run (he gets the number of old hosts rather quickly).

    to connect-VIServer $VMServer
    $VM2Move = @)

#Exclude virtual machines and hosts on the new groups
    $AllOldHosts = get-vmhost-location $Location | where {$_ .parent-NotLike "newcluster01" - or $_ .parent-NotLike 'newcluster02'}
    $OldHostTally = $AllOldHosts.count

    {Foreach ($OldHost to $AllOldHosts)
    $VM = get-VMHost $OldHost | get - vm | Select name, folder, host, Powerstate, Version
    $VM2Move += $VM

    $VM2Move | Export Csv OldVM.csv - NoTypeInformation

When I get to the end of the pipeline 'select name, folder, host, Powerstate, Version', I get the following text:

I am still awating the output by using the statement select (still takes way too long).

How it should be written?  Any improvements would be appreciated.  It seems the only link between cluster and VM is through the host.  The virtual computer object has a property of the host and the VM-Host object has a Parent pointing to the cluster property.

    Hello, JohnnyScript-

    Welcome to the communities.

There are a few things to make it who can help speed up your code.

    • Since you already have objects VMHost Get-VMHost calling on line 4 of your code, you should not use Get-VMHost still once for each unique host (or any host)
    • There are a few variables that you need not, as the $VM2Move to the concatenation of data table and the $VM table of the selected objects
    • While we are cleaning things, we must not use Get-VMHost at all, really - Get-Cluster will suffice

So, with a bit of a re-write, you could generate data of OldVM.csv with something like:

    ## get all clusters not named the two given names&{Get-Cluster | ?{"newcluster01","newcluster02" -notcontains $_.Name} | %{ ## this cluster object, to be used later $oThisCluster = $_ ## get the VMs in this cluster, and select a bit of info about each Get-VM -Location $oThisCluster | Select Name,Folder,Host,PowerState,Version,@{n="ClusterName"; e={$oThisCluster.Name}}}} | Export-Csv c:\temp\OldVM.csv -NoTypeInformation -UseCulture

It ends by using Get-cluster and a Get - VM times once a cluster (vs using Get-VMHost once by the host and Get - VM host twice).  You should notice a fair speed increase.  If you really need the speed data, you could do even better with secret of most favorite people, Get-View.  We leave it for another year.

    How does he for you?

  • Maximum clusters by Datacenter

We have vsphere 4.1 and virtual center. We need to know the following.

    1. What is the maximum number of clusters esx in a data center, we can create?

    2. is it possible to vmotion between the cluster?

    3. There will be a limitation in clusters?

    4. we have 2 groups and each group has 3 ESX host. We have a blade that is kept as a blade of incentives. Is it possible to share a blade to spare between 3 groups of ESX?

Suppose we have 3 groups and each group has 2 inside esx host. We have an esx host kept waiting. Can we use this host Eve through three poles for Drs Ex.Incase one of the ESX host fails in one of the clusters, will be the day before esx server can share the load?

You can not use this host sleep to 'share the burden' of a cluster. However, if the hardware failure, Yes, you can move this standy host in a cluster.

  • Why is there a gap with disk space?

I have an old hard drive of an older XP machine. I connected it outside to take a glance of data for backup purposes. The hard drive is 80 GB, and Windows reports that there are 21GB free (or 69GB used). If I take the properties of all the files (including hidden and system files), it showed a value of 60 GB of data. I made a clone of the disc and that the container was also 60 GB. Why "Camembert" said 69GB? Where the 9FR? I also run Chkdsk as well.

I'm nervous that I'm missing some data...

You have at least three different things that may be confusing you.

The reason most likely for a "gap" as big as 9 GB is the System Volume Information folder.  This 'super' hidden folder is mainly used for system restore points, but also may include databases indexing (when you allow the default behavior of "Allow the Indexing Service to index this disk for fast searching of files").  Even if you can see the folder System Volume Information in Windows Explorer when you uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files" option, it reports a size of 0 bytes - regardless of what is actually in the file.

Although there is a way to access the IVR - which is strongly discouraged - folder start by opening the system restore and see how much you have restore points.  By default, Windows XP allocates 12% of the size of the partition to restore the system, so if you have a nominal 80 GB partition, you 9.6 GB allocated for SR.  Assuming you did spin for a while, this allocation is probably filled (restoration of old points are deleted on a FIFO basis as new are created).

If you are reasonably confident in the stability of your system, run Disk Cleanup (start > run > cleanmgr.exe > OK) and select the tab 'other options '.  Then click on the "Clean up" button in the "System Restore" section to remove all but the last restore point.  If you do this, my guess is that your 9 GB gap will disappear.

In addition to the SVI folder, there are a couple of relatively minor points:

Not all 'gigabytes' are the same.  When a drive manufacturer says you have a 80 GB drive, it means that your player has about 80,000,000,000 bytes.  Windows reports a drive of this size as having 80,000,000,000 / 1.073.741.824 = 74.51 GB (where 1.073.741.824 is 1024 * 1024 * 1024).

In addition, there is a difference between the number of bytes in a file (the ' size' reported by Windows when you examine the properties of a file) and the space occupied by the file on the hard drive.  Windows is reported as the size of the file 'on the disk."

More recent operating systems Windows, including XP, the default size 'cluster' for readers to the NTFS format is 4 KB.  See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/140365.  When a file is recorded on the hard disk, it occupies a whole number of clusters.  On average, half the size of cluster is "lost" for each file stored.  For a player with a normal mixture of sizes of files and about 150 000 files, only about 300 MB of space will be wasted.

PS: You should reduce the allocation of space SR to 1 GB.  See http://bertk.mvps.org/html/diskspace.html

  • Windows that display only half of the disk capacity

I have a new laptop HP EliteBook with Windows 7 SP1 is installed. SSD has 500 GB, but the system is only half of the disk capacity show.

What can we do?  Thank you.

CHKDSK discovered...  0 KB in bad sectors. 719099 KB in use by the system. 65536 KB occupied by the log file. 89854676 KB available on disk. 4 096 bytes in each allocation units total 60636159 the disk allocation unit. 22463669 allocation units available on disk.

Coincidentally reduce then extend the volume again?

CHKDSK is essentially a tool of file system and the capacity of the disc that you see in the Explorer disc property is actually the size of the file system rather than the physical size of the volume, the physical size of the volume is based on the head of sector, while the size of the file system is based on the number of clusters (allocation units).  The file system has a total of clusters 60636159 x 4096 bytes = 248,365,707,264 bytes.

Different size according to the different tools are both correct, but the file system is not using the entire partition, you need to extend the file system with the Diskpart tool.

At a command prompt, enter the following commands:

    C:\ > DISKPART
    DISKPART > list Volume
DISKPART > select volume c (here, you can use the figures given by the Volume of the order list or use the actual letter of the volume, in your case 'c')

    DISKPART > extend filesystem
    DISKPART > exit (exit Diskpart)

Here is a screenshot of the procedure:

The file system extension is relatively safe, but as always you should ensure that you have a good backup of your files before doing any kind of work of system disk/partition or file.

  • cluster with telepresence Server 8710

    Hello

Currently, I want to deploy the client conference and here is the list that I bought for my client:

    -telepresence Server 8710 with 24 licenses x 2

    -MSE 8000

    -License CUCM

    -VCS license

    My questions are:

    1. from the Cisco documentation, I know that 2 of my server of telepresence could be clustered. 1 my server Teleprsence will be the master blade and the other will be the blade of the slave. By doing this, my server of telepresence is already grouped?

    2. I don't have a driver's license, but I know that this driver could manage 1 telepresence Server wethere that she is not allowed. I tried to manage my my server in cluster of telepresence, but he said that driver had 2 telepresence managed server. I thought that my number of clustered server of telepresence in 1 for conductor. Can someone explain this?

    3. what happened to the deployment guide if I want to use all my 24 licenses? From my understanding, 1 Telepresence Server Blade can only manage 12 licensing screen and cascade could not been since I couldn't do it as remotely managed. Help, please.

    Thank you.

Telepresence Server MSE 8710 installing blades are autonomous, it is not until you configure using the blade of supervisor MSE 8050 they will become a cluster.  See clustering on pg 90 of the Supervisor MSE 8050 Help Guide.  I don't know how a cluster server Telepresence would manage a conference which exceeded a unique ability of blades that was within the cluster, but according to the help guide of supervisor, it is said that the master blade could allocate licenses video port to the participants in the Conference that could be a big conference or several small conferences.  I would say, just create a conference and start adding in the participants and see what happens.

Looking at the conductor data sheet it is said that the Essentials (or the free version) can support '1' (independent), since a cluster behaves as a single server, but in reality it is more than 1 server it probably not supported.  The conductor Admin Guide on pg 17, it is confirmed that the free version of conductor does not support cluster conference bridges.  It seems that if you want to use with driver cluster conference bridges, you must at least move to select conductor (middle version), because the free version does not support.

If you use driver for some reason, you should be able to configure the 8710 blades runs remotely managed mode, I have several configured this way, but they are all autonomous blades, none is in a cluster.  Help server TelePresence MSE 8710 Mode guide managed remotely on the basis

Is there a particular reason that you must use a driver, why not use the blades of telepresence Server 8710 MSE mode managed locally in a cluster?  Help server TelePresence MSE 8710 Mode guide managed locally based

  • Migration of the Foglight environments

    Afternoon,

We are in the process of establishing a new environment Foglight to merge our 3 existing configurations.

    Currently, we have:

2 servers in HA Foglight 4.x running

2 physical servers in HA running Foglight 5.5.5

2 VM HA servers running Foglight 5.5.5

We have just installed 2 new VM servers running 64 bit 2008 rc2 with 8 GB of ram to monitor the end everything.

The installation of the new system went well and the new foglight environment is in place and works and we followed him themselves through the cartridge of the os currently.

Now, we must come up with a migration to start plan to move their follow-up out of the systems to decomission.

anyone has the tips/advice/previous epxereince of migration / departure more and how to maintain monitoring scripts and custom etc, when travel agents 1 environment to another?

Thank you very much for the advice given

    See you soon,.

    Rob

    Questions:

    (1) graduation: VMs how are you trying to monitor?  8 GB of RAM is a VERY small environment.  The number of clusters allocated?

    (2) persistence of the old data: how much time do you have old data to be available?

    (3) download and install the FGLIDE, it will make your life much better.

  • QuickPrep error

My vCenter is in another area and connect to the server in a different domain, both have a way of trust between them.  When I tried to create a pool, I get the error of fast saying account is not authorized to perform the config.

vCenter/composer/view Admin must be in same domain?  the reason why I can't saw in my field of vCenter server connection, because I have more of 8 clusters and view does not support that. I'm looking for a work-around as we test just the VMware view.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

With vCenter and view connection to the server on different areas should not be any problem.

You must add a Domian account with enough permissions to join computers to the domain under Viewcomposer domain accounts (edit vCenters-> enable view composer add domain.) Admin guide p14).

Once you add to it, select this account to the personalization of the pool Wizard page.

View has a limitation of 8 hosts per cluster, but no limit on the number of clusters by vCenter AFAIK.

  • SLES + OCFS2 shared physical RDM

I intend to install a cluster node Linux SLES OCFS2 using a RDM in physical mode 3.

I did this once before with both VM and set bus SCSI physical Division on the 1st virtual machine, and then for the 2nd server selected the 1st mapping VMDK file. This gave the desired effect to allow the physical RDM to be shared, but meant that vMotion was not possible for one of these two servers.

What I intend to do this time is to configure all the same VM 3, everyone has the physical RDM attached without bus sharing together on the SCSI bus.  This is possible, I think that, by setting config.vpxd.filter.rdmFilter to false before you add the ROW to each virtual machine. Then the anti-affinites rules will be set to stop 3 VM running on the same host. This should allow the sharing of the RDM OCFS2 and vMotion of virtual machines.

I think it will work. Can someone tell me if there are problems with it? Is this a supported configuration?

    Thank you

    Neil.

More than 2 nodes is not supported by VMware. OCFS2 supports more than two nodes. It has been popular with Oracle RAC, until everyone has opted for the DSO. While VMware does exactly what the no-MSCS Clustering support or requirements are. Most of the things are based on the limitations of MSCS clusters in VMware. I am about to implement a number of clusters for a customer with OCFS2, but will be limited to two nodes. We were just will you use FT for our high availability needs, but with the guest operating system as a single point of failure have failed to meet application SLAS.

  • What is the case with the 33rd host in the cluster?

    Hi all

The limit for a DRS or a HA cluster is 32 ESX servers. What happens if you try to add a 33rd host?

Well, I got up to 36 hosts in the same cluster and I haven't noticed any errors. Work of VMotion, DRS...

    ESX3.5 U2 and Virtual center 2.5 U3

    Best regards.

Yes, as David said, there is a limit that has been tested by VMware, so it's a MAX supported.  Nothing will stop you from adding other nodes to a cluster, and it can work very well. But if something happens, you might reduce the node by number of clusters down a limit of support.

On a side note, may I ask why you would have many hosts by cluster rather than simply create more clusters with a smaller amount of hosts?
