Cannot access Outlook Express all of a sudden.  I can't move in my messages even remove.  I get through my messages on my laptop but not my PC. Why he would just this work to quit smoking?

Please explain. Unable to access OE does mean that you can not open it. If you can not open OE, then of course you cannot move or delete messages.

If you can not open OE all, see this.

When OE crashes or won't start
http://www.insideoe.com/problems/errors.htm#crash

If you can actually open OE but then these problems, try a new identity.

You may have a damaged identity especially if it's the default main identity. File | Identity | Add the new identity. Create a new one and try it. If all goes well, you can import your messages and address book from the old identity and delete it.

Note: Do not use the main word in the name of the new identity.

In addition to the problem that is described in this article with temporary files, Outlook Express can have an empty message, if Internet Explorer is configured to display, coding for automatic selection. If so, disable the automatic selection in Internet Explorer and choose rather Western European (ISO). If your program has an option to read HTML messages as plain text, the HTML version of the message may appear as an ATT0001. HTM attachment (the number may vary).

  • My Outlook Express messages are saved as .ids please help

After getting a virus tds, I tried to backup my Outlook Express messages by copying the identities under the application data folder. The problem is that in the exact folder where Outlook Express said that it stored the messages that I have 3 files with the correct names: Inbox, saved etc. but extensions are .ids NOT .dbx and the files are only about 1 KB. My Oulook Express reinstalled does not recognize these files and rename the .dbx does not help. Of course since they only about 1 KB of real data probably isn't there somehow. So even if Outlook Express has actually done this folder as folder where it was stored, is it possible that my messages were stored somewhere else, under data of demand or they are lost forever? I will state that I have no file .dbx anywhere!

    Tina.

    Do this first:

Select Show files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder Options icon | Opinion, or in Windows Explorer. Tools | Folder options | View.

Now, do a search and look for *.dbx

Don't you think that all dbx files that are not part of your new message store folder? Note the location and after return.

This is due to floating files, the result of many messages in the Inbox, or lack of compaction.

Move all messages you want to save out of the Inbox, deleted items, and sent items in local folders, you create. Locate the OE message store and then close OE.

If there is no message in the Inbox you want to, but can not move after return, before doing anything more.

In Windows XP, Win2K & Win2K3 the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder Options icon | Opinion, or in Windows Explorer. Tools | Folder options | View.

With OE closed, find the files Inbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, and Deleted Items.dbx and remove them. New files will be created automatically when you open OE.

Compact all folders as described below.

To avoid this in the future:

Do not archive mail in the receipt or sent items box. Create your own user-defined folders and move messages you want to put in them. Empty the deleted items folder daily. Although the dbx files have a theoretical capacity of 2 GB, I recommend all a 300 MB max for less risk of corruption.

Information on the maximum size of the .dbx files that are used by Outlook Express:

After you're done, followed by compacting your folders manually while working * off * and do it often.

Click Outlook Express at the top of the the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work offline (or double-click on work online in the status bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed.

Had a major power outage 6/28; power finally restored 7/3 but had to reconfigure Outlook Express but also a number of other programs, including the password for computer access.

This article is quite old: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/191946 but if you search for *.wab which will give you the address book, and it is probably corrupted.  You can click on it and check whether it is open or not.  If not, then look for * ~ * and who will be the backup of the address book.  Try to rename to give it a file extension wab and if it opens when you click it, and then replace the bad with it.  Otherwise, remove the old one and see if that fixes it.  You might be best by clicking file | Identities and setting a new identity and then see if it works fine.  If Yes, then you can import the old identity.

Thank you to everyone out there for your help!

You have apparent dbx file corruption in sent items and possibly the Outbox.

Spend most of your messages out of the Inbox, and then create the new box of sent, and sent items files after you move the messages you want to save to a local folder that you create.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

With OE closed, find the DBX files for the items in the Outbox and sent and delete them.  New ones will be created automatically when you open OE.

    General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in the receipt or sent items box. Create your own user-defined folders and move messages you want to put in them. Empty the deleted items folder daily. Although the dbx files have a theoretical capacity of 2 GB, I recommend all a 300 MB max for less risk of corruption.

Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. • Outlook Express 6 - recently emptied my folder deleted items, but now I can not remove any messages in my Inbox

For my sins, I always use Outlook Express 6 for my e-mail personal. Recently, I've erased my deleted items folder, but now I can not remove any messages in my Inbox. Any ideas?

    Thank you

Outlook Express has never reduced the file size of the file folder deleted during the clearance of the output folder. Instead he left a lot of dead space that has not been used for something beyond too much space.

The good news is that if you simply, locate the Outlook Express mail storage folder and delete the Deleted.dbx file, Outlook Express will recreate a new vacuum the next time it starts up.

    1. Open Outlook Express and access Tools, Options of dialogue,Maintenance tab, click store folder and copy the location. Close Outlook Express.
    2. Click on Start, run or the Windows key + R to rap then paste in the location previously copied and press on . The storage folder should open.
    3. Remove or rename the Deleted.dbx file.
    4. Close the file, and then restart Outlook Express.

That should solve your problems of deletion. You can also run a Compact on your other files .dbx tabmaintenance Tools, Options dialog box.

  • A message from problem Outlook Express crashes, cannot remove

When I get a message from problem in Outlook Express, marked with a blue "down arrow" which means a low priority, it crashes Outl. Expr. so I can't post it, remove it, or anything.  I have to close Outl. Exp. and reopen it and avoid to come to her.  I received another message from the same retailer online with the same arrow and was able to remove it, but this one puts me.  I tried connecting with the email client in Windows 7 on my wife's cell phone to see if I could delete it, but he apparently left the server.  It seems therefore that the message has disappeared, but still in my Inbox.  How can I get rid of him?

Turn off the preview pane so that when you select, OE try not to make it.  Then hold down Shift as you remove them.  It should disappear. Brian Tillman [MVP-Outlook]

Outlook express 6 does not work anymore so I went to windows live mail, but I keep getting error messages re; Outlook express, even if I do not use it. How can I get rid of error messages?

You are welcome. If you ever want difficulty OE, you need not to be able to access first.

The path to the message will be very similar to this:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Your User of utilisateur\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\ {long string of letters & numbers} \Microsoft\Outlook Express

Simply deleting Folders.dbx and OE should open after that.
