Portege M400: Can I install a SATA Western Digital?

Can I install a Western Digital SATA in my Portege M400?

I've tried and failed.

I can copy files CD for the new HD system, but the result is a failure to blue screen when the system boots.

I can't get a clean install of Windows XP to start same - HD is not recognized despite the use of the Toshiba SATA/RAID drivers from a floppy disk.

I tried to use Norton Ghost to copy an image of the HD (work) in the new HD, but which also results in a blue screen failure.

Is there something exclusive on the SATA?

The laptop will not work with the original HD?

A (larger) replacement Toshiba HD work?

-don't

Turn off the laptop and the beginning he presses the ESC key.
On the third page of the bios (pg down), you will find the raid configuration.
I assume you actually already the RAID setting, but it is not really written on the HARD disk.

At a first remove the RAID and replace JOBD confirmation of the 1234 password.
Save the settings restart und. Re-enter the bios and change JOBD to RAID (new 1234).
After that your HARD drive works perfectly!

I have improved my Portege M400 Winows 7 (32 bit), which went well. However, impossible to find out how to get and install the utilities that I included with XP Tablet version.

Can anyone suggest how to get (I understand that they were available for Vista)?

    TIA.

    Kris

    Hello

The Toshiba utilities do you mean are designed only for Windows XP. On Windows Vista and Windows 7, you need only the Toshiba value added Package. This package contains everything you need.

Portege M400 doesn't support Windows 7, but you can try installing the Vista drivers. Most of them are also work on Windows 7.
AFAIK, you must also Support Button Toshiba on this model.

  • Satellite A300 - after the BIOS update I can not install two OS

    Hello everyone:

I bought a laptop Toshiba Satellite A300-247 with Windows Vista Home Premium.

Then I formatted it and divided the hard (320 GB) into 6 partitions and installed Windows Vista and Windows XP on drive C to drive D after having changed the SATA controller mode in the BIOS for compatibility. The computer worked well with 2 operating systems. However, when I updated the BIOS to version 1.9, two operating systems stop working and one of them can be installed: XP can be installed when SATA controller mode is placed on compatibility and Vista can be installed only when the SATA is changed to AHCI.

Is there is no explanation of what past? And can I install operating systems 2 together again?

    Thank you

    Hello

First of all, I doubt that this has something to do with the BIOS update. I think that after the BIOS update HARD drive mode has been changed from AHCI to compatibility and therefore the OS didn't start.

Anyway, in compatibility mode you can install Vista and XP without the SATA drivers. This should t be a problem.

But do you know the difference between compatibility and AHCI? AHCI mode is faster and therefore I would recommend this mode.
Like you said Vista you can already install in AHCI mode and for XP, you need Intel Storage Manager. This package includes the SATA drivers you need and here is a step by step guide to use these drivers:
    http://APS2.toshiba-tro.de/KB0/HTD9401AN0000R01.htm

Last but not least, you can install 2 OS. You can do what you want! ;)

Anyone know how to get your hdd to work again?
When I try to open the WD hard drive in, start - computer and then double-click the hard disk drive, I just that stand: F: \ is not accessible.

I built my desktop computer, on my own, win7 64-bit SP1 included, MSI MB, 128 GB Crucial M4 main hard drive.

    * Have tried to reboot the computer, does not work.
    * Plug the WD hdd in my laptop 64 bit Win7, do not work, same error.

In Disk Manager, I see that the drive works fine, and I see that it has the right amount of space, since the last time I used the hard drive.

But how can I contact with my Western Digital elements Desktop 1.5 WDBAAU0015HBK to external hard drive?

    Best regards

    Jocke

    Hi Jessica,.

First things first: Let's try to save your files!

Method 1: (take a look at the method 2 first before you start method 1, it is perhaps more to your tastes).

Since you have to build your own PC I guess you are tech savvy enough to boot your PC in a Linux environment. I've seen many HARD drives that suddenly don't would not open in Windows more but normally open in an environment Linux like Ubuntu, Mint, DSL, etc. etc.

    • Enter a blank (empty) USB key.
    • Download Universal USB install.
    • Find a Linux distro to your tastes. Just take a look at Distrowatch or just go with my favorite version: Linux Mint and download the .iso image file.
    • Run the USB installation tool
    • Step 1 scroll down to Linux Mint 13 cinnamon (or the distribution chosen by you)
    • Step 2 Browse for the right .iso image file downloaded
    • In step 3, select the empty USB.
    • Start the process.

When finished restart your PC with the USB attached. During startup, select the menu boot options and choose to boot from USB. Now boot Linux Mint. No installation required! : D

When you arrived at the office, search your Western Digital HDD elements in 'computer '. Now hope and pray that it will open! If so: start copying all the files and folders immediately to another drive.

When everything is save go in Windows and format of the WD hard drive. With a little luck, it'll work again. You'd better check the SMART data to see if the drive status.

    Method 2:

Since the drive appears in disk management, try to make an image using a program like DriveimageXML or what you want. Once finished, try to read the contents of the image. If you are able to do this, you have just saved your data. Now format the WD hard drive. With a little luck, it'll work again. You'd better check the SMART data to see if the drive status.

    Good luck, Sebastian.

  • Cannot access the data on Western Digital My Book Essential.

Original title: Western Digital My Book Essential

Cannot access data stored on My Book Essential 3 TB.  Desktop computer no longer recognizes.  Laptop sees it, but I can't access the data.  Cord replacement binding have at the least visible on laptop & office 'discover' for a long period of time.  An hour pending with Western Digital with no live person on the line.  Am now thinking the drive can't be fixed and Western Digital is not actually support.

If I buy a replacement, how to make the data from the old to the new?  All suggestions will be useful.

    Moved from IE

If you do not see the data, you can not transfer it. Keep trying with Western Digital.

  • Can Portege M400 - I install SATA2 HARD drive?

I want to replace my old SATA1 80 GB HD with a new 250 GB HD, but I can not get a proper HD SATA1, are the SATA II compatible with the M400 HDs? Would your recommend a suitable HD?

Also, I want to install Windows 7 starts as a clean install (to replace the current XP Tablet edition). I seem to remember that there could be problems with getting drivers raid in place first, is this correct?

    Can anyone help please?

    TIA

    Chris

    Hello!

Disks hard SATA2 will work in Portege M400 because they are compatible downgrade to SATA1. It s the same interface but the theoretical transfer rate is higher. The only difference which s.

For the installation of Windows 7, you should try the RAID for Vista driver. The Vista drivers are also work on Windows 7.

    Good bye

  • Portege M400: Cannot install windows XP

    Hello

My friend gave me his Toshiba Portege M400 (PPM40E) at the table of settings windows XP (HHD is already formatted copmletely).

Before that I've never worked with SATA controller

So, when installing RAID drivers are required for any HDD lying.
I bought the USB floopy and downloaded some drivers from Intel.

Having suffered a bit, I found requireded (as I thought), hard disk drivers detected (even the license agreement I signed) but that pilots still needed to proceed with the installation.

IF someone faced this problem can you send me on my e-mail ([email protected]) required drivers or give me an exact link?
    Looking forward to your advice.

    Thank you for understanding,
    Best regards from Russia

    Hello

Maybe a stupid question but why you do not use supplied recovery media for the installation of the OS? As much as I know Portege M400 (PPM40E) comes with Windows XP edition PC of Table (teacher WXP).

Anyway, check it please this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316401/en-us
Maybe it will help you understand the problem.

  • Portege M400 - cannot install OS or restore an old image

I have a portege M400 and im hardly set any operating system of windows on them. When it gets to the stage where he asks what hard drive to put in place the windows files to, it does not detect the drives.

I also have an image on a hard drive that I use a universal driver restore program to restore to any laptop regardless of the make and model and which also blue screens after the logo of windows xp when it starts up. The toshiba is the first laptop that I fell on this issue.

The BIOS is currently 1.8 I think, I can't even put the hard drive in compatibility mode or AHCI.

im a little confused about restrictions of this laptop.

Can someone guide me on what I need to do to install windows on this machine please?

Timox is right: the RAID driver must be added during the installation of Windows XP.
During installation, you will be asked to add 3rd third-party drivers. As I m not wrong not you must press F6 to add the RAID driver.

Very important note: do not format the HARD drive once the RAID driver has been added because this would remove the RAID driver from the HARD drive and installing Windows XP will fail again.

  • Cannot install Vista Business on Portege M400 - IDE issues

Hi guys... I am looking for your help.

I downloaded all the new Vista drivers avaiable from Toshiba in support of the new installation of Vista business on my old Portege M400, that came preloaded with a version of XP Tablet and kept their loan on a CD.

I also upgraded the version of the ACPI BIOS to the latest available 3.80.

I insert the first CD of Vista professional and do a boot. (I also have a n upgrade Vista Business CD but I want to do a clean install).
I go past the first steps and choose Install.
I am faced with an error message "no disk has been found. "Click on load a driver to provide a device for installing mass storage.

Looks like Vista is not able to see the IDE drive to the edge and it's a driver problem.

I touched the "Rescan" button available on the windows installation and another message appears: "no device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct driver, and then click OK. »

Currently loaded on the XP: currently loaded poster IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers like Device Manager: "Intel (R) 82801 G (ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage Controllers and primary IDE channel."

Hard drives shown are: Toshiba RAID SCSI Disk Device LD0

Pls tell, what new drivers since available downloads of drivers Vista for my model 400 ML PPM40E, should I choose here for my Vista installation recognizes the disk available?

    Hello

It is very easy to solve this problem.
If you would look on the page of the European driver Toshiba (Portege M400 section), then you will notice that a RAID driver is available for this model of laptop.

Impossible to install Vista because it cannot find the HARD drive due to lack of RAID driver!

You must install the RAID driver first and then you can proceed with the installation of Vista.
As far as I know the Vista installation accepting the USB flash key you can use this key to include the RAID driver.

Hope I could give some useful advice.

    Cheers mate

  • Impossible to install Vista on Portege M400 - not compatible with ACPI

    Hello

    I have a toshiba portege m400.
It has windows xp professional installed SP3 (the former owner he replaced with that of the xp tablet edition - I want to upgrade to vista so I can have the capabilities of the rear shelf!)

In any case, I have a vista version - a version upgrade Home premium.
When I try to install it it comes up with the error:

+' This computer is not compliant with the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) standard. Windows must be installed on a computer that supports ACPI. Contact the manufacturer of your computer for an update of the BIOS, or install Windows on an ACPI compatible computer. " +

When I try to boot from the cd it gets up to when I type in the product key, but then he tells me I have to run this from my current operating system.

I tried to update the BIOS (it is currently 1.8 and I heard vista needs 2.0 at least). I tried to install the latest driver from the Web from Toshiba - BIOS version 3.2.8 site but it says "this computer is not supported" even if I went through the procedure of choice of type of my laptop and spec and the pilot came on his list.
Now I'm pulling my hair out.

    Can someone help me please!
Would be to get a full version of vista (not an upgrade version) work and boot from the cd because it seemed to go further like this?

    Thank you!

    Hi guys

I think I know how you will be able to update the BIOS

I read here in the forum that in very rare cases, you have the Toshiba preinstalled OS in order to update the BIOS
So in my opinion, you will be able to update the BIOS if install you the operating system from the Toshiba recovery disc.
After installation try to update the BIOS

After the BIOS has been updated you could install the new Vista

    See you soon

  • Does not install the audio driver for Portege M400 WinXP

    Hi all

I have a Portege M400 (3G) and I managed to extract the Windows XP Tablet Edidtion the recovery DVDs. I installed Windows XP and all the drivers in the correct order (I've omitted some of the software I don't need) and everyting works fine (in fact, I am posting this from the tablet itself) except for the sound driver. He refused to istall and gives an error message that the software does not apply to this model; even if it is the only available page driver drivers Portege M400(3G).

    any ideas?

    Hello

where to download the driver? On the European site? Maybe you should try the Canadian site, they sometimes have some drivers who hasn´t europe and maybe you can find the audio driver that matches:

    http://EU.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp

Otherwise, there is another option: find out which audio chipset is installed, visit the website of manufacturers of this chipset and download the drivers. Him to work.

    Welcome them

  • Windows 7 can't detect the TOSHIBA Portege M400 RAID driver

I put to level my M400 tablet from Windows XP to Windows 7.

Questions of compatibility check out, all right. In research I realized I needed to upgrade the RAID driver to a version of Win7. So I downloaded which, from my external hard drive to install to Win7, and installing Win7 can't find it. I tried the same thing with a variant of Vista with no luck. Even through the installation on the hard drive itself, nothing happened. Impossible to get in the tio silent run command prompt, absolutely nothing. I'm back where I throw this computer out of my 4th story window.

    Any help please?

    Hello

Where did you download the RAID driver?
Please try to download the RAID driver on the Toshiba site directly. These drivers are pre-tested and should work on your laptop too.

The older Portege M400 taken Windows 7 isn't supported so in the worst case, you can t use it.
But normally the drivers should work on Vista so make sure you are using the correct driver.

  • Portege M400: SATA 120 GB Seagate Momentus HD is not recognized

I bought the new and more great SATA HDD for Toshiba Portege M400. It's the drive Seagate Momentus 5400.2 120 GB SATA NCQ, but this drive does NOT work in M400. Laptop does not recognize this HD - only message is error HD (after approx. 3 minutes) and also part of the BIOS and the BIOS RAID does not know this HD.

I don't know why in my office that this drive works perfectly. Can someone help me with this drive in M400? Is - is this possible problem with NCQ function? (I don't know, how do I trigger this function NCQ) Or something else?

    Thank you!

In my opinion, your laptop and the BIOS cannot recognize this HARD drive because of the large size.
As far as I know, you can use 40 GB, 60 GB, 80 GB and 100 GB hard drives. I'm not sure about 120 GB HARD drive size.
But if you want to be sure that the compatible devices and supported at 100%, you can contact Toshiba service partner in your country.
There you can also order the parts.
