  Check your BIOS settings to make sure that your list of boot device is set correctly and in the right order. Maybe it's that the system tries to re-boot during installation, but the bad device.

  I have W7 Professional (32 bit) installed on an Acer Ferrari 5000 with 4 GB of RAM. I have a 1 TB WD My Book USB external hard drive connected via USB.

  When I access the drive to play an Explorer of W7 film shows my folder & first screen load files instantly, but then the green progress under the full path bar direcory slowly starts to move across the screen and may take up to 3 minutes to stop. Durning his time my pc performace Marc everything stop. The video load but Windows Media Watch does not respond and the hourglass (or a circle in W7) shows the application as it is busy. Finally, video begins to play but jumps several images at once, even if the sound is fine. After about a minute the video started playing at double speed, befire the entire process repeats itself until it catches up with the sound and the video will play very well for about 10 minutes.

  Videos are not damaged (I can play my portable hard drive very well), the device signals healthy in the WD diagnostic tool and the firmare for the device is up to date (on the WD site).

  I see a lot of people in this forum have problems with W7 64 bit, but there is no mention of 32-bit issues. Also there never was problems with the device was detected or is not accessible - gal just access the device. My only job is about from the drive to copy the movie on my laptop and play it from there - which kind of defeated the purpose.

  I left a similar post on the WD website, which so far had no response. Is it a question of W7/USB? Any other ideas would be useful.

  Speed on USB hard drives is relatively slow at first. You are looking at maximum read anywhere between 25 and 32MBs speed if the CPU is not do much else at the time. Supported playback mode tend to transfer bog down over time, as the fragmentation of the file. USB is convenient but firewire and eSATA are faster and faster.

  I would really appreciate the help. I own a satellite 1800-712. I have receently bought a usb external hard drive for some extra memory (IE Toshiba MK4026GAX USB Device)

  When I connect it to my usb port it records any with the computer. The green light so there is power to the hard drive. The usb ports recognized of other fine features (a modem and memory stick)

  I tried the external hard drive on a desktop pc and it works fine.

  I have downloaded all windows xp service pack updates and updated my bios. Don't know what to do now.

  I have a Seagate USB external hard drive. It is loaded with all my pictures and music. I can not open. I did in the past without problem.  It is a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex. It says that I have the drivers updated. I've started and restarted. uninstalled and installed etc. It's also almost if there is nothing on the disc. When I plug it into the USB port it will not appear in the my computer tab, however, it shows in the toolbar at the bottom as installed but with nothing on it. When I run the troubleshooter, it says that the problem can not be detected, but it also says that the device is functioning properly. I do not know because I can not the specifics to fill.   I installed an external USB connected hard drive Seagate to copy some movies and pictures of my HP laptop with Vista, but it became a big problem. It slowed the computer and check the new disc repeatedly. Then it wouldn't start without the external drive at all but it was working fine once he was conducting with the external hard drive. So thinking I can outsmart the computer, I uninstalled the drive from Control Panel.   Please try the possible fix following first thanks to Carey Frisch:

  1. open the BIOS of the motherboard.
  2. find where it says Priority Boot Device, then select CD/DVD-ROM 1, 2nd Hard Drive and disable all the rest.
  3 find somewhere in the BIOS where it says BOOT USB, Wake on USB, etc. and disable all unnecessary options.

  And second if it does not help, you can try the following with Blue Michael:

  Local Geek Squad had me intentionally set the BIOS to the correct order, then re-order and SAVE.
  It worked, even if the list of the BIOS was always in the right order.

  Hello, I'm under the latest version of Windows Vista Edition Home Premium on a Dell XPS M1210 and spin in the problems with the connection of my second USB external hard drive.   Most likely, there is not enough power for the USB port of your machine to the external device do recognize. As a test I would have you test the issue on another USB plug.

  Back to your question: each laptop with pre-installed operating system (factory settings) a small tool which create recovery media. This recovery (DVD or USB) media can be used for the original recovery image installation. I assume that you did not create this recovery media, right?

• HP Pavilion 15 laptop: Need help, PC laptop HP Pavilion 15 could not boot from USB external hard drive.

  My desktop HP Pavilion P7-1074 4.5 years computer dropped last week. Planed to get a replacement on Black Friday or the day after Christmas.   I went into the BIOS to set the boot order to boot from USB first, but I could not get the result I expected. The laptop still start on its own hard drive. I tried all three USB ports, no one works.

• Using a Mac to partition a USB external hard drive to use to start Windows 7 on a PC

  My PC hard drive died recently, and I need to reinstall Windows 7. Fortunately, I have a Windows 7 .iso file on my Macbook Pro. I also have an external hard drive USB empty. I try to use the Mac (in particular the disk utility program) partition this hard drive and load the .iso file in it, with the intention to start the system and install Windows 7 on my PC. (NB. I think I need somehow do "bootable" my hard drive to boot from it, but I don't know how to do this using a mac, so that it will be compatible for Windows startup.

  I've had this problem for days now and nothing I try seems to work - I tried what seems like all combinations of formatting, partitioning, extracting, BIOS-set-up-ing and file-system-change I can think of. Any help will be really appreciated. Also, if you need information such as specifications, just let me know and I will try to provide all the details I can.

  In addition, I understand that there a lot of messages on the boot from external hard drives, but I looked carefully and found nothing for my situation (more precisely using a mac).
