  Hi Daryl,

  Bay expansion is actually a 5.25 "which is usually used for an additional optical drive.  However, you can use this Bay for one SSD or an additional hard drive using a 5.25 "to 3.5" adapter Bay or a 5.25 "to 2.5" Bay adapter.

  The e9280t of the firm also has berries to drive HP Pocket Media and personal media drive both of which as pluggable and portable USB hard drives.  These readers are hard to find at reasonable prices.  You might find them on eBay

• MD3000 cannot change virtual disk ownership / preffered path - ERROR 29

  PowerVault MD3000 (deleted by the moderator) - attached to two servers PowerEdge R610 using Dell SAS 5/e card in each r610. The R610s act as a host ESX VMWare ESXi 5.5.0

  We have created multiple LUNS on the storage array and noticed that traffice all happening through a RAID controller or another module (and it seems to me not change without prompting when you look at the storage Bay). I turned off a two different virtual machines to try to change the path and had an error with a certain delay - I stuck this error below. I also tried to redistribute virtual disks tab the MDSM software nothing works support.

  By reading, it seems that the LUN should be attributed to a particular raid controller before all I / 0, but I still feel like're missing us something as to why we cannot distribute the traffic properly.

  Hello MrRedPants,

  Since you are using a configuration not redundant you will have problems trying to modify the paths between the controllers since the two hosts have only a single connection to the MD3000.  What you could do if possible is to get 2 more SAS cables & connect ports second on the MD to RAID opposite that the host is currently connected to.

  Now, if this isn't an option so that you can make is to have 2 disk groups and assign the virtual disks / LUNS that are connected to each host in their own disk group.  If you go to each host their own groups of disks, then you will need to stop the e/s as you move the Ramdisk to the new group of disks so that you want to discard any data loss.

  There is now an available upgrade, called generation 2 for the MD3000 (and incidentally MD3000i) available on the support.dell.com site storage array allowing > 2 TB and RAID 6 virtual drives (and other features).

  MD3000 1 includes all the generation (and MD3000i) releases to date, it should be noted with the 06.xx.xx.xx RAID Controller Module firmware version. 2nd generation RAID Controller Module Firmware version is 07.xx.xx.xx.

  PLEASE NOTE: The upgrade of the Module of generation 2 RAID Contorller is an offline OPERATION, thus all i/o to the storage Bay must be STOPPED PRIOR to the download of the update.

  The MD Firmware Cross Generation Upgrade Utility should be used to upgrade the firmware of the controller RAID 1 from generation to generation 2 Module. The utility is installed with the latest version of the Storage Manager MD as part of a selection of Management Station installation.

  NOTE: Microsoft Windows 2000 and Redhat Enterprise Linux 3 as a host what OS are not supported by the generation 2 upgrade.

  Here are the steps to apply the upgrade of the generation 2:

  -Read the applicable documentation

  -Stop all i/o to the upgraded storage array

  -Back up all data on the storage array

  -Install the upgrade of the management generation Station 2 Modular Disk Storage Manager on the management station

• MD3000 STORAGE BY ADDING W2K8 CLUSTER

  Scenario:

  MD3000 with group a disk / 4 virtual drives assigned to a W2K8 with Cluster Services server.

  Available disk space is very low.

  Have a RAID 5 + 1 spare in 0-5 bays.  No player in the Bay of 6.

  Have no disc in 7-14.  Have 4 replacement disks to use to create the new space.

  Have 2 HBA host Ports, was assigned to each server in the cluster.

  Issues related to the:

  Would it not be better to:

  A. Add free capacity to the current disk group must be assigned to the virtual disks?

  or

  B. create a new RAID array, as well as a new disk group and assign the disk to the cluster group?

  Unknown:

  1. is the risk of maximum data loss with either of these scenarios?

  2. I guess my configuration would not allow increases the ability to drive in disk management if I add the space available for the existing disk group.  In other words, space present themselves as an extra disk instead of ability at the end of an existing partition.  I would have to create an additional partition to use the space.  I'm looking for a 2nd opinion.  Also, what is the risk of data loss in this scenario?

  Known elements:

  I have good back ups and I can plan for the worst case.  We also have facilities of failover if I need to use.  We have already saved our databases and imported in the backup system.  However, if the risk of data loss is high, it will affect my calendar.

  Either A or B will work, but on an MD3000, you will need to add additional disks in the diskgroup in disc 1 of GUI at a time.

  Option A will take hours to days, depending on disk size, disk speed and production IO. After the diskgroup growth you can expand virtual disks or create new virtual disks. Possible to evolve from a virtual disk is the only command-line (smcli (part of the installation of the storage software manager)).

  Option B will be available almost immediately (the virtual disk will be rub, so it will not be a potential maximum return until it's done), but you need to move some of your data on the second drive (do not use dynamic disk to merge 2 drives in a single drive letter, if you are using Windows).

  Performance wise a raid 5 is better off limits to 6 or 7 discs. 7200 rpm disks, once you get to 6 or 7 discs and cannot afford to make a separate/2nd raid 5, I would recommend raid 6 instead of raid 5.

• MDSM loses communication to MD3000 when new disk inserted

  I have a MD1000/MD3000 Bay attached to my Dell PE R805 running Win2008 R2 SP1. I made sure all the firmware and drivers have been updated to the latest version (I'm configuring a failover with another server cluster). In the process, I add an additional drive to expand as well as add a witness disk. Readers, I am trying to add are Seagate ST2000nm0001 (Constellation ES).

  Whenever I slip one, the light Board orange and loses contact with MDSM. If I pull the hunt, the table will right itself and reconnect with MDSM after a minute or two.

  MDSM suggests that 1) the table is turned off, 2) the network is disconnected, or 3) there are too many connections TCP/IP (?).

  Any thoughts?

  The player must have a Dell firmware on that it is compatible. There is no (profitable) way to take the generic road and the Dell firmware on the drive, so your only choice is to buy the discs from Dell or a reseller (e.g. through Ebay).
