  I'm just to add that I used the recovery partition to do a clean install of Sierra on a hard drive external and then booted into it to see if it had the same problem.

You should be able to go to the history menu (Firefox button > history) and look at the "recently closed tabs" and the submenus "recently closed windows" and restore a lot of what you had open. Also in the history menu, you can select "show all history" and can search if all sites you have been to.
