  I have an Ideapad Y560p and my laptop does not seem to read large usb 2.5 ", external hard drives. I am trying to use a 500 GB and the disk turns but does not entirely and open in Windows. The external hard drive works on another laptop.

  (Sometimes), I can access my 320 ext hdd, but this player also has problems. I also have a "TTO Tray" error that appears often, and these problems may be related.

  Yes, I tried a cable in there, but the power supply doesn't seem to be the issue.

  I COULD have solved the problem. I found the disc in my device manager and it has been disabled. I tried to activate the device, but I got an error code 22, and I needed to remove the device. When I plugged it in the drivers have been reinstalled, and it seems to be good for now.

• Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB external hard drive problem

  I have a Seagate USB external hard drive. It is loaded with all my pictures and music. I can not open. I did in the past without problem.  It is a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex. It says that I have the drivers updated. I've started and restarted. uninstalled and installed etc. It's also almost if there is nothing on the disc. When I plug it into the USB port it will not appear in the my computer tab, however, it shows in the toolbar at the bottom as installed but with nothing on it. When I run the troubleshooter, it says that the problem can not be detected, but it also says that the device is functioning properly. I do not know because I can not the specifics to fill. Y at - it somewhere that I can take this drive to see if someone can see if my files are always about this and that so they can transfer to another drive? Help, please!

  It seems that when you connect an external hard drive Seagate USB to your computer, there is no indication in the drive. I appreciate the action that you tried to solve the problem.

  I would like to know the following information.

  (1) what version of Windows is currently installed on your computer?
  (2) have you tried to connect the hard drive to other USB ports?
  (3) you are able to use other USB devices?

  I suggest you to connect the hard drive to another computer and check.

• Since the update of Vista on my external hard drive problems

  I have a problem with my external hard drive. A week ago I reinstalled Windows Vista Home Premium on my PC. Everything worked very well, my external hard drive, too. But after installing all the new updates and SP2 my external hard drive has problems. If I copy something from her, or just listen to the music is recorded on it, so overall if I work with her, after 1 to 3 minutes it stops working. I have to sign in to get access to it again. But before installing SP2 updates after SP2 everything worked out very well. So I think that there is a problem with SP2 or the following updates.   I can't backup to external hard drive, it starts and does not say "Device not ready" then I tried to back up my laptop outside even hard without any problem. Could it be, if I tried a different USB port on my desktop external hard disk... Any other ideas please...

  Have you tried another USB port (your post is unclear)?

  The external hard drive has its own power supply or just connect with a USB cable?  If there is no separate power supply, disconnect all other USB devices (except keyboard and mouse) and see if that helps.

  The external drive shows in my computer?  If so, what happens when you double-click it?

  Don't show external drive in disk management (start > run > diskmgmt.msc > OK)?  If so, a drive letter is assigned? If so, what is reported to the layout, Type, file system and status?

  Only the external drive shows in Device Manager (start > run > devmgmt.msc > OK) to the title of "hard disks"?  If Yes, what is displayed when you double-click on and look at 'Device status' and 'Use of the device' in the general tab?

• External hard drive problems - we have most of the files to get a message "access denied."

  USB connected external hard drive was used with XP.  For a small period of time, we had to connect to a machine from W7.  Now that we are back to the XP machine, we have most of the files to get a message "access denied."  How we fix the problem.  The files are images, videos or music.

  Try this,

  Start in safe mode.
  Open your computer and right click on your external hard drive.
  Go to properties.
  Click Security.
  Click on Edit under a quote "to change permissions, click on change."
  Click on Add.
  Type in "everyone" in the white box.
  Then check in the box "total control".
  Press OK.

  This makes the hard drive usable by everyone (all users and different computers)

• External hard drive problem (cannot delete files)

  I have an external hard drive that I use Windows XP and I am now on Vista 64-bit. I have no problem to access the files on the disk, adding of new files or move files on the hard drive. However, I can't delete the files located on the hard drive. If I right click on the folder or file, the Remove option * literally * does not appear in the menu. I'm on the administrator account (only the account that was created).

  The problem may be somewhere around this: if I right click on a file and goto Properties, read-only is enabled. If I disabled it and save, it acts like it is the application in the directory and all its subdirectories. When I return to the properties, it is again read only. I guess that the problem lies somewhere in the present.

  Any suggestions? This has been an incredible pain for many months.

  Thank you for posting.  Your problem is related to the file ownership.   You will need to change the permissions of the file/folder to be able to remove it.  You can do this by right-clicking on the file/folder and selecting the Security tab.  Once there, you can change the permissions of your account regarding this file/folder.  You may need to do this for all files in a folder to be able to delete the folder.  There is a 3rd party tools that will allow you to add this feature in the right click menu.

  I recently bought a Western Digital 1 TB external hard drive. When it is connected through the USB port my Pavilion a815n Windows XP hangs on the blue HP screen at startup. Western Digital technical support Advisor info sent to me I need to change a setting in BIOS but I can't find the trunk of USB device option setting in the BIOS of HP.  Can you tell me how to access this setting, or what else to do to solve the problem?  Thank you!  Jake

  Problem:
  After connecting a device USB to the PC, the computer does not start in Windows.

  Cause:
  The motherboard has a boot from the USB device, or a similar option, which is enabled in the system BIOS.

  Solution:
  In the system BIOS, disable the option to boot from the USB device and the USB Legacy Support option. This will allow the PC complete the process on the internal hard disk and allow you to enter Windows. If this does not work for any reason, you should boot your PC before connecting the USB key. Once the computer is fully booted Windows, plug the USB and wait for the operating system to detect the drive.

  Update the BIOS seems to have solve the problem. It was normally restarted with the attached hard drive.  Thank you!!  Jake

  So I recently got my WD external hard drive to start working again.  However, the other day, after unplugging, when I tried to reconnect, my computer decided is not to assign a volume letter.

  Details:

  -The hard drive has the same problem on any computer, that I try to connect.

  -The hard drive is recognized by the computer but not assigned a volume letter.

  -I can't assign a letter volume on the hard disk by using computer management.  However when I try, the possibility of a volume letter is not there.  The only option available is to initialize the disk.  I tried to initialize it using parameters of MBR, but I get an error stating: "the request could not be performed because of an i/o device error."

  -I don't want to reformat the hard drive, but given that the files on it I would recover.  I realize in order to get the drive working again, it is a necessary step, but I would like to recover as many files as I can before I reformat.

  If anyone has a suggestions I would be very happy.  Thank you!!

• Lightroom CC - edition in the external editor with images located on the external hard drive problems

  I have recently moved most of my image containing folders on external hard drive. In general, everything works smoothly in Lightroom (running latest CC). However, if I try to use an external editor of in Lightroom, I managed opening image in Photoshop CC if it is chosen. However, if I try to edit in a NIK Collection programs (i.e. Viveza 2) or affinity Photo I get error messages. The copy of Tiff is generated within lightroom, but at the spearhead of the external editor the following messages are met...

  • Viveza 2 - 'News file. Plist could not be opened"
  • Photo of affinity - "'could not open the file - / Volumes/4Tb iMac/2015-10-20-202036/Macintosh of the castle of my book 2 Backup/Backups.backupdb/Neil HD/Applications/Adobe Illustrator CS5/Plug-ins.localized/Photoshop Filters.localized/Unsharp Mask.aip/Contents/Resources/he.lproj/InfoPlist.strings the file type is not supported.". " My external backup drive is " " " 4 TB my book 2 backup" but my images are on an external drive called "4 TB My Book 1" ".

  However, if I move the folders containing images of problem on my desktop (iMAC 27 2015) in Lightroom external editor command change... works very well. The images open with Nik Collection and Photo of affinity and save in Lightroom when save. Everyone knows about this problem? And if you have, is there a resolution?

  Looks like I solved my problem with Lightroom. I disassembled my external backup drive, but upheld the disk external drive containing the photos up and then restarted my mac. After the reboot, I open Lightroom and chose the image on an external drive for mounting in affinity Photo and Collection of Nik. Both image successfully opened in editors. I reassembled the backup drive and rebooted time machine and repeated the same opening picture in external editors. Once again, works great. Have no idea where the original problem. Looks like a bad path was stored in a config somewhere file.

  Right or Ctrl click on the top-level (backslash) folder and choose promote subfolders from the popup menu. You may need to repeat for the Volumes.

  Yes, certainly, that is the problem. A FAT32 file has a maximum
  size of 4 GB. and the message 'out of space' is the misleading
  message that you get if you try to create a larger file...

  Note that your System is not NTFS. Is your system disk is
  NTFS. Drive external is almost certainly FAT32, and you should
  reformat to NTFS.

  I recently bought a WD elements external HD for my mac to use for storage (no backups)

  I deleted a large number of files from my computer and placed them on this player, and now the drive has stopped working. I let fall or something.
