• Several QLogic QLE2462, HBA in an ESX Server twin?

  We are studying the possibilities of virutalize some of our SAN FC connected servers. These servers are more data intensive, and each of the 10 physical servers 2 paths for our EMC CX SAN. The question comes down to virtualization to them, we will continue to soon use the LUNS of same as physical origin servers used in RAW mode. These LUNS are DATA LUNS only and operating systems will be held in images VMDK on a VMFS LUNS.

  Since each of these servers had a connection to the consolidation of our fabric SAN 3 or 4 of them to a single server VMWare would free many fiber connections on the switch. And the question was raised if once before 4 servers with their own direct SAN connection would be affected having to share a single path to the San.  This makes we wonder if anyone out there has multiple HBAs in a single ESX host? Would you add x 2 or maybe even 3 x QLE2462 HBA in our unique AREA of HOST ESX? Will be ESX using these cards or it always by default is simply having a connection and the rest comes to be considered as standby?

  Well, do your hosts (at least in this example) less than 500 KB/s and a reasonable number of IOPS / s, 1 card so should be much (although I recommend 2 cars for redundancy).

  Dear team,

  On one esx host, 3 xiv LUNS are shared, once I see status for those LUNs, all LUN 3 mutipathing I m able to see 1 track, next is the wink of the same.

  

  Team SAN speaks to end then everything is OK (zoning etc...), they informed us that check the same thing on our side, is something I need to check, since I m able to solve the problem of mutipathing.

  Because NONE of the LUN that you are using the configuration of the path is set up correctly!

  Here a few facts of your logs:

  1. vmhba2 uses a 4 Gbps link speed, vmhba 3 uses 2 Gbps
  2. vmhba2 is the single HBA that could access 500GBFRM3400 VMFS datastore (via 2 paths), so it is a single point of failure
  3. vmhba2 report 2 of 4 of the goals as offline

  IMHO, you should immediately contact your storage and a team of SAN to solve this problem.

  Based on the papers you provided that your environment is running unprotected (with several SPOFs) for several months.

• Can we use use DELL R610 / R710 for execution of the ESX host?

  We will purchase a new server to run ESX 3.5 or vSphere.  We have new DELL servers.

  We considered R610 and R710, but we see that there are only 2 PCIe slots.  As one of them be given for an image ADDITIONAL NIC card, there is only one location for HBA.   It is advisable to use a Dual Channel QLogic QLE2462 HBA.

  However, it seems that the Dual Channel HBA will be a single point of failure - if it is connected to 2 different switches FC.  We would love to hear if anyone uses these DELL servers to run the ESX host.

  Good question, I would have preferred two HBA cards. If storage fails everything disappeared. If network failure you will not have access to the outside, but the chances of data corruption is smaller.

  Before the explanations, here's the context:

  At least 4 servers ESX version 3.5 u4. All HP Blade 680c G5 with HBA Emulex LPe 1105 (a Firmware 2.72)

  On 19 August, we experienced a disconnect on 4 servers san blades in the same case. (Our fault, it is an isolated cluster and all the virtual machines are down, bad luck )

  I opened a SR at vmware and they statufie it was a hardware failure.

  Here are the logs, which appeared at the same time on the four ESX servers:

  After you open a call to HP, they said that we must upgrade to the latest version of the firmware, 2.80a4, available since 14 AUGUST 09 (!) - and no reported similar problem...

  Now, I'm trying to upgrade my firmware on all ESX servers in all speakers...

  I'm looking for just the best way to do it, because it seems that it is no longer possible to do with lputil.

  HBanyware seems to be the best solution, in fact, I'm working on it with our team of SAN...

  I would be interested in some good links and of course if someone had the same kind of problems?

  Hiya,

  There is a new version of the software downloadable hbanyware from the emulex website that works more precisely with esx3.5 u4.

  (lputil is no longer supported with esx 3.5 u4)

  It's a bit of pain to use compared to lputil, you must specify the name WWN in most the hbanyware orders well.

  I found it easier to allow remote through the ESX hbanyware Firewall (see readme with hbanyware for syntax) then administer them all the hbanyware running my Windows VCB server remotely.

  Reached the maximum number of paths supported 1024. Vmhba2:C0:t0:L3 path could not be added.

  I have this KB link to solve this problem, but I can't ask SAN admin to reconfigure the storage attached to the ESX host so that the total number of physical paths to storage is limited to 1024.

  Its a Production cluster. Please tell me how I can solve this problems. ESX will state is unresponsive and must restart their. The State does not

  ESX server shows these symptoms given blow:

  • A host ESX/ESXi is not accessible via the network with the vSphere Client.
  • A host ESX/ESXi is not accessible via the network with ping.
  • Virtual machines running on ESX host are not accessible over the network.
  • vCenter Server reports the host does not respond.
  • The ESX/ESXi host does not react anymore local or input to the console.
  • Pressing Alt + F12 to the console does not display the VMkernel newspaper.

  . This is not good.

• U200 with QLogic QLE2462 againt HP MSA2000fc?

  We are considering purchasing a U200 server and I am woundering if there are no reasons whe this woulden can't work with our storage HP MSA system 2000 CF if we equip our server with a QLogic QLE2462 FC HBA?

  Hi John,.

  No there is no problem with that.  The C200 is fully certified with QL HBA.  The QLE2462 requires just a PCIe x 4 slot.  The C200 has a x 16 full and low x 8 profile, so you should be fine.

  Regarding compatibility with the table, also long the HBA is compabile with the array (MSA2000fc), I it is positive, it shouldn't be any problem.

  I was wondering if there was a way to show the use of an HBA via Enterprise Manager. I ask because a member of our DSI complain of performance on a server. When I look at the volumes on the SAN, I see that there is a lot of activity but the latency is in the single digits. It seems so well in this perspective. I wonder if the latency may be low due to the fact that they iscsi hose is fully saturated. So, it seems that the SAN takes care of all the reads/writes with a problem but maybe that all reads/writes are not get there in time.

The best course of action to be able to see where the neck of the bottle is to I would recommend do you a house phone so that we can report on how everything is set up. • Reference Dell 6gbps SAS HBA and Powervault TL4000

  We have a server Poweredge R620 with Windows 2008 R2, two Dell 6gbps SAS HBA cards installed and Simpana software backup R2 9.0.

  We also have a TL4000 with two IBM drives, all firmwares are up to date.

  Each SAS HBA card is connected to each drive in the library via a single cable SAS.

  I can see the cards in the Server Device Manager.

  The library works, but when I monitors the status of the disk in the web interface of the ilbrary, the two ports and B seem to 'not ready, not connected. "

  I tried to use Simpana to detect the library. But it cannot detect anything after dozens of tests and scenarios.

  Problem has been resolved with the help of Bestami Bayramoglu of Dell Technical Support team.

  I took some pictures of the rear of the server and the library and sent them to Bestami.

  They analyzed and was told that the SAS cards were not inserted and locked properly.

  These cables are equipped with a locking mechanism and they do not work if they are not inserted and locked properly.

  Another question for readers; SAS cards inside my server r.620 part number is j53x3. Crack of metal of this card is not compatible with my server in a rack. The correct we reference number is 3ddjt.

  Bestami told me about this and we will order correct.

• Dell R730xd with mode PERC H730 and RAID/HBA

  Hi all

  I have a new Dell R730xd with a PERC H730 card. I have six 4TB readers connected to it. It works very well in RAID mode, but the map also has support for the 'HBA' mode In other words, the card works like a basic HBA and disables the RAID functionality. When the HBA mode map software can see the disks, but they never make it through the operating system. Readers are not detected in the MESSAGE as no RAID and there is no option to convert them to no RAID.

  I talked about this through with technical support, which have been really helpful, but we can't find a solution. It seems to work on their server, but not mine.

  So I write here to see if anyone else uses this configuration, or to find out if anyone has had the same problem and maybe even resolved. Let me know!

  We had the same problem as well. I was able to solve the problem but doing a factory reset in the HBA. After the reset and reboot retype again HBA configuration and activate the HBA mode and your good.

• 6 GB/s SAS HBAS do not post on a R720

  Hey guys, so here's an interesting question that I was wondering if anyone has seen him. So we have a series of servers R720 with 6 GB/s THAT SAS HBA cards in them (2 per server). On the whole, but 1 of these servers, don't see no map us in the original POST that let's us get in and see what are the addresses of SAS. Now, the weird thing is, once we loaded the OS (tried 4.1i ESX and Windows 2008 R2), you can see the HBA without problem, but it does not help when you try to assign SAS ID to the MD3220. Is not as if these are bad cards (possibly, but that can mean that we got a few of them). There really seems to be something with how the R720 is (UEFI, perhaps?) or is not listing these cards because I don't see even in the cycle of life and the console business iDRAC7 management controller.

  Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

  3 years later, ongoing execution in the same new problem and I managed to solve.

  In the BIOS, spend built-in-> Slot disability devices. The SAS cards had their defined slots on "Boot driver Disabled. I changed the "Enabled" and of course they appear in the BIOS now.

  It's funny how things are when you revisit them later.

  Just changed jobs to a HP Server and storage on a Dell server environment and storage IBM environment.

  So, how can I find the HBA (QLE2462 and QLE2562 PE R710 and R910 Server? drivers

  I'm looking for them, I'm digging in the storage section.  All I can find so far is the Firmware in the R710 section.

• UCS C240 M4 will not start from the HARD local using MegaRAID SAS HBA 12 GB disc

  I have a new server C240 M4 with 12 GB of MegaRAID SAS HBA. I have configured a key virtual bootable (VD0) with 2 SSDS and disks SAS TB in a RAID 5 Virtual Drive (VD1) + global hot spare with 5 1.

  I installed ESXi on VD0 without any problem, but the system doesn't VD0 as bootable.

  I tried adding a local HARD drive in the boot order using the MMIC, but it seems not to be inserted in the selection of boot device.

  Any help would be appreciated.

• The Serial HBA Adaptec 1405 + windows 7 + Seagate 1 TB hdd SAS ST1000NM0001

  Dear community members

  I have the Adaptec card to the subject

  -J' updated its BIOS/FW to the latest version
  -J' downloaded and installed the latest Adaptec 1405 for Windows 7 x 64 drivers (in my case)

  The map itself correctly detects the ST1000NM0001 SAS 1 TB drive (I have a background of basket SAS connected to the HBA, where the HARD drive is gliding/plugged)

  Please note that this HBA + cables and so on, perfectly work with a connector SAS 146 GB HARD drive *.

  Since the HBA BIOS, I am able to test the ST1000NM0001 and also for formatting (it takes 4 hard hours)

  Windows Disk Manager detects the HARD drive

  But soon I run the initialization command, disk management is blocked and backplane hdd activity led (one led for each HDD bridge) turns off.

  The Adaptec 1405, according to its documentation, supports SAS drives up to 2 TB (especially after that the BIOS updated)

  So, what's the problem?

  Why can't I initialize and use this ST1000NM0001? Please note that, as said above, he Commander of the Adaptec BIOS, it seems healthy and working properly, no errors are popped when I formatted, nor when I tested it (test and the format are two commands available in the BIOS of the Adaptec HBAS)
