  If the disks are not appearing in BIOS, it seems unlikely that XP will be able to see them no more.

  Describe the best you can, your hard disk configuration...  IDE, SATA, SCSI, RAID configurations...

  If you have chosen to 'Try' Unbuntu I recommend now you run chkdsk /r from the recovery console. The problem is not with the hard drive probably, but with the file system.

  Download WIndows Xp Recovery Console from HERE. Save the file to your desktop. You will need to burn the iso image to a blank cd using the same way you did to the image ISO of Unbuntu ImgBurn.   Sounds like a hard drive problem then. Your drive is maybe defective. First of all, you can use the partition of diagnostic Dell (F12) for its determination.

  In case there is a SATA problem, press F2 to enter the BIOS and change the setting of hard disk SATA to legacy. (Might as well try this first.)
