• Dummy question about MRS?

I need one HBA connected to the San Server SRM or SRA is necessary?

Thank you

Dominic

Yes you are right. The SRA is written by your storage vendor and allows access to the Server manage the storage for a test failover or a complete SRM failover Bay. According to the seller, you will need to provide specific information on your storage space when you install and configure the SRA. I would check the SRA documentation for details and the necessary communication.

• What additional questions you need to ask to qualify an opportunity of MRS?

I know that the most obvious, and I was able to get the answers below.

(1) you have two sites prod & dr (YES)

(2) you have two environment vSphere, including vcenter servers in both places? (YES)

(3) do you have licenses Aat sites (YES)

(4) what type of SAN? (NetApp 3240 / 3140)

(5) is the SAN replication configuration? (SNAP, MIRROR)

(6) what is the speed of connection between the two sites? (100 MB)

(7) you bought licenses SRM? (VC - SRM - 25VM - C VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager (1) - license - 25)

What else do I need to ask to make sure that they have everything in place for a deployment of MRS?

http://www.VMware.com/PDF/srm_storage_partners.PDF

Go to the section of NetApp and find the table with appropriate SRM version, Protocol and check if your storage space is listed.

I have no knowledge of NetApp berries, but I see entries for tables V31xx and FAS31xx. This suggests that your tables is supported. Make sure that you run version ONTAP support.

• Newbie question: you have to have 2 servers vCenter for MRS?

We did turn ESX in recent years and have just started the process of implementation of the SRM.

I have a vCenter (virtual) server that manages the production and DR data centers. He usually works on my cluster of Production but can work on my DR cluster. It can manage all ESX hosts and see all iSCSI storage (IE production san and DR san)

Can I have a second server vCenter to implement SRM?

The documentation seems to require it

Thank you

Andrew

Yes, you don't have to have 2 vCenter servers.

• General question: how Vista "identified" an ethernet network?

I have read hundreds of messages on the issues of 'unidentified network' and do not yet have a solution that works with the installation of the network that I am trying to use. Rather than detail the entire setup I prefer address configurations easier in which I see the same questions. Network discovery is enabled on the Vista PC, and the firewall is disabled.

Configuration 1: Windows Vista PC with onboard LAN adapeter connected to a netgear hub and subnet ip address assigned (192.168.0.1) (255.255.255.0) static - no gateway or DNS addresses. Vista solves this to an unidentified public network, which can be changed in private, but the 'unidentified network' brands is not editable.

Configuration 2: Windows Vista PC with onboard LAN adapeter connected to a netgear hub and functions of automatic IP DNS addresses selected as automatic. Vista remains in mode "identifing" with the public network scored.

Configuration 3: Same as 1 Setup above, with another PC (IP 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0, no gateway address) added to the hub. Vista solve this to an unidentified public network, which can be changed in private, but the tag 'unidentified network' is not editable - same result as the Installer 1.

Is the label 'Unidentified network' OK for configurations above? (How Vista identifies an ethernet hub network?)

If a configuration change to make the private network persists, or should it change to the Public whenever it is discovered?

The network tag not identified either editable - it seems that it is, but the keyboard is not accepted.

• Question design and update

Hello community,

I have a following question design and update on vSphere 6 with MRS.

In out of our subsidiaries, we have configured following installation:

-VMware vSphere 5.5 environment with Site Recovery Manager that runs on 5.8 installed U3.
-Two vCenter server running in a configuration in linked mode, so you only need access to a vCenter server to see both sides.

No, we want to upgrade to vSphere 6 and here I have some question how says it in the best conditions.
Wouldn't be a good thing or maybe it's mandatory to have a service of external platform controller installed in the vSphere environment and then start the upgrade to vSphere 6 each side has its 'own' PSC.

Thanks for some tips and training on your side.

Did you read the documentation regarding the upgrade to SRM 6 located here: Site Recovery Manager 6.0 Documentation Center

Who will answer all you questions, including your subject to PSC. A short summary, you want a PSC for each site. The reason is that you want that each site to be completely independent of the other.

If read you the docs and you still have questions, please post them.

• Are thinking of duplication of table to the replication of Vsphere, a quick question

We currently use Array replication and plan to use the replication of vsphere for flexibility. Unfortunately, we have more than 500 virtual machines to protect - but it is another question and I hope MRS. deploy several devices that will help.

I can't determine which network interface, the replication traffic goes on:

1 Hypervizor ports between the ESX hosts (which are 1Gbit in my case) where VMS are?

2. pushed through vcenter somehow?

3 Vlan than VR devices are connected to the?

I have a 10 Gbps link between sites, trying to find how to use more than 1 GB, because the 3 options above are 1Gbit. Although the unit sat on a group of ports that is supported by the host ESX 10Gbit links - but I guess that the only real device of a 1Gbit NIC adapter.

Hello

Replication traffic is going:

1 VR source ESXi server at the remote site via custom protocol LWD (light-weight-delta) TCP ports 31031 and 44046.

2. outside in VR server via port 902 device and Protocol NFC ESXi host target, then the target data store.

Separate NICS for VR (isolation of network traffic) replication traffic - to GDL from source ESXi to GDL for server VR application and for inbound replication traffic target ESXi NFC are not available in the current versions, but are part of an RV to come free.

The VR machine using a NIC vmxnet3

For the current version, you might want to perform some custom routing/formatting via the ports 31031 (initial full synchronization) and 44046 (all the traffic from replication after the initial synchronization is complete).

Kind regards

Martin

• Question of shared recovery Site

Here's my scenario. I need to test VMware View and SRM. I plan to use scripts provided by EMC to help with view and SRM because the view was not really made to be able to test in a DR scenario.

I have two vCenters in a production data center. One is used for my normal "servers" and is vCenter 4.1 x 64. The other vCenter is used for VMware View host computers, I have this vCenter (called "VDI") because I use View Composer and it is not compatible with x 64 servers.

On the site of DR, I have a vCenter. It is currently running vCenter 4.0. Now, I know that I can have a shared with MRS recovery site, but virtual machines can also be shared?

For example, should I perform a test of SRM which includes a production vCenter my "Server" domain controller and also include the view virtual machines that are part of the other 'VDI' vCenter in my production?

Thank you!

First of all, what version of MRS. you plan to use? You mentioned the two vCenter 4.1 and 4.0. SRM 4.1 is not compatible with vCenter 4.0 and SRM 4.0.x is not compatible with vCenter 4.1 (SRM versions must be the same at all sites).

Regarding your question, I have not implemented recovery shared functionality, but as far as I know, even in this configuration you can still pair site independently, i.e. protected satellite site SRM and SRM instance of its corresponding recoverysite instance. So I don't think that the associations for the Protection of several sites will be available to include in the unique recovery plan.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

• Initial (and probably more common) question of Dr on SRM and private networks

Hello

Can anyone share best practices on the ground with regard to my question archiecture of network:

According to the guide of the SRM administrator: Mrs. in protected sites and recovery must have access to the same private network (logic).

We will have protected sites and located on the same ground but both recovery are far from each other on separate parts of the campus and there is network connectivity between sites.

What are the different ways we can get two separate sites to share a private network? What is the best practice?

(1) fiber optic cables directly between sites using Layer 2 switches? Any potential problem with switching over a distance?

(2) with Layer 2 VPN MPLS? Enough to handle the traffic scenarios and failover/failback mature?

(3) should work around SRM to allow a routed 3-layer solution?

I'm from VMware

As I said more simple solution is scalable layer 2 making available of VLANS / subnets in two sites in order to avoid the re-ip address of the recovered virtual machine. MPLS and direct DC of interconnection on fiber/xWDM were popular alternatives for the extension of the L2. As with anything there are advantages/disadvantages for things like network and mobile IP service (for example, routing, load balancing, etc.) of persistence or rigidity. The Cisco & VMware following white paper might be of interest that it focuses on a new DCI solution that introduces new options for VM environments. The paper is mainly centered around the Cisco Nexus product range and the ability to now support active/active balancing on various, redundant DC links:

http://www.Cisco.com/en/us/solutions/collateral/ns340/ns517/ns224/ns836/white_paper_c11-557822.PDF

You will notice the support of max distance of 200KM that is referenced in the document comes from the limits of support for the underlying storage replication (200KM for most synchronous suites), but there is also the effect of the reactivity of latency and VMotion application considerations. Site Selector Global (Cisco GSS) can be used for the traffic of a smart-balancing the load on the front-end server application as well as for unloading DNS service, DHCP and other common services - it would be more of a supplement to the core DC interconnect solutions mentioned above and not necessarily an exclusive alternative.

Not sure what you mean by a workaround for Layer 3. SRM has the ability to re - ip of the VM during recovery, allowing you to change all THE info from the network stack inside the VM (network/gateway/dns servers ip/mask) and even generate scripts of ddns, but according to my post previous changing network info is in almost all cases, I worked with a customer "2nd choice".

• Question on the design of multiple sites

Hi all

We currently have 2 a SAN Equallgoic in the main office and one branch office are. We have 3 ESX host to each location for a total of 6 ESX host. All virtual machines are stored on Equallogic SAN, and all hosts will bind in a virtual Center Server at Headquarters. Each site has a few virtual machines that are running for this office and replicate these VM to the other office for purposes of recovery after disaster. I have attached a diagram of ruff of how it is configured.

Now for the questions:

(1.) with the VM being spread over two sites all also how Virtual Center will handle high availability through the VPN?

2.) if HA been trigger due to a failure of the host to one of the sites how will decide what server the virtual machine starts, and if she decides to start up on another host in another site, how will he know to use the replication data

Currently, 3) We have no site recovery manager then recovery is a manual process. What would be the best method for manual restore?

(1.) with the VM being spread over two sites all also how Virtual Center will handle high availability through the VPN?

HA will work but only within a given site. i.e. If a virtual machine is to site A and site host A fails, he feed to site A. If you want to go to site B, you should look into MRS.

*2.) If HA off due to a failure of the host to one of the site how

He will decide what server the virtual machine starts, and if she

Decides to start on another host in another site, how will he know to

Use the replication of data*.

It will not try to start on the other side and use the replicated data because the target of replication is probably read only.

**3.) We currently do not have site recovery manager so the recovery is a *.

manual process . What would be the best method for manual restore? *

A complete site failure will look like this:

1. breaking replication

2. your LUNS replicated to your able recovery read/write site

3. present the LUN being replicated to your ESX server hosts

4. configure the host ESX server to the LUNS will rescan and add data warehouses and resig (according to ESX3 or 4)

5 browse the data store or vmware-cmd to save virtual machines on the replicated LUNS

6. do a quick validation test (make sure that the vSwitch/portgroup configuration is acceptable)

7. power VMs on 1 at a time. Since its an IPSEC connection I am doubting you lasted VLAN so you'll have to re - IP as it happens

8. change DNS settings

9 adjust the upstream/downstream dependencies as needed.

SRM will automate everything up to 8 and can usually be scriped manage 9. This is not 100% complete, but should give you an idea.

Edit to add your next questions:

* should the LUNS of

the two sites be shared to all ESX servers? or would it be better to simply

have the local ESX servers to have access to its premises LUN? *

Your local ESX servers should have access to only local storage devices, unless you have a very low latency and a fast connection between sites (say < 10 ms and at least gigabit) as well as having in this respect be a layer 2 connection. In this way your VLANS/subnets/etc are always the same on the other side.

• License SRM question

I have 3 x ESX hosts in my recovery site each with 4 CPU sockets (12 in total). Those that reside in the same cluster.

I only bought 8 licenses SRM as resources for the protected virtual machine is quite low.

To make sure that I am within my tolerance of license I only present storage replicated containing VMS protected against 2 of the ESX host.

However, I see in the event log, the following message appears:

"The SRM_PROTECTED_HOST of function SRM is more allocated by 4 licenses.

So my question is: how MRS. knows which ESX hosts in a cluster license?

It is not, it assumes that the entire cluster is used for MRS. By also replicated LUNS to only half of the cluster is not recommended, and something I would never recommend because the results of HYALURONIC acid launched restart is unpredictable.

• Patch 2 for release 1 MRS.? Where is he?

We received the following VMware e-mail:

http://now.Eloqua.com/e/es.aspx?s=524 & e = EED63317D3724581B89E5B3AB969550A & ELQ = recipientid

This message indicates that the Patch 2 for 1 update was released in February 2009:

In February, we released the Patch 2 for 1 update. (Patch 1, published in January, was absorbed in Patch 2). Patch 2 addresses the following questions:

• Mapping of the inventory screen hangs when SRM protects more than a handful of guests

• Test and recovery fail for some virtual machines when retrieving multiple ESX clusters, where clusters to access different sets of data warehouses.

But I'm not able to find this download on the VMware site, nor do I see that it mentioned in this forum. Any suggestions?

Hi Matthew,

you need to connect to the download area SRM even you used initially to download SRM itself and also any SRA I suspect this confuses people because when they sail on page before you download SRM before you click download it seems to me that if you press the download button you download SRM and not patches of SRM. The truth is when you navigate to the download page, you will see a large download table where we have links to not only code SRM, but also fixes the SRA and all MRS. have attached a screenshot that shows you where the patch is.

hope this helps

• HA & MRS

Hello

Just a quick question on the interest of SRM.

Let's say I have a cluster HA B. SAN site allowed 10 hosts ESX, 5 on site A, 5 on the shared storage.

Isn't HA enough Dr. unpanned?

Why should I use SRM (apart from the possibility to test the DR) instead of MRS?

Thank you

This is not possible as MRS. requires sites to be managed by their own CR. Nonrepeating HA through two VCs.

Quick question for you - what storage use? I'm curious how you get active/active storage so that if the building with shared storage of burns you get HA to work immediately on another copy?
