RAID 5 - foreign

I found one of the three disks (disk 0:2) status as 'foreign '. I don't know what I have to do. At the edge of this car is fixed green light but no activity. OpenManage on the status of this player is "Foreign", two other disks are 'Online', system works well, but I know I have to fix this ASAP.

Help, please.

Thank you

It allows to disable the cache if the battery is down, but if this isn't the performance impact, you can expect to replace it.

My server is a Dell PowerEdge 2900 with Raid 1, using 2-1 TB HDD.

I had a problem with the server and needed to its cleaning of windows install. I need to work on files reinstall everything and did not have a large enough to back up car. For lack of time, I couldn't wait until I get a big enough drive, to remedy this I removed a HARD drive while the system was down and restarted the server. The BIOS has complained about a foreign configuration and made me enter the PERC 5 / i (CTRL + R) facility, I deleted the foreign config and restarted. Everything started fine. I reinstalled windows, got a backup copy of my data and cleaned with DISKPART second HARD drive using another computer.
Now I want to reinsert the second HDD and rebuild the table. When I go in manage open it shows my virtual disk as degraded, and when I'm going to show the physical disks, it shows me the physical disk 0:0:0 as foreign and physical disk 0:0:1 as being online.
Disk 0:0:0 is the drive I want to add to the table.
How can I add it without losing my data on the physical disk 0:0:1?

    Can someone help me please?

    Thank you!

    Hello.

Since the meta-data on physical disk D 0:0:0 is different from the controller, it is necessary to clear the foreign configuration on disk physical said without affecting the data on the physical disk 0:0:1. Subsequently, it could drag in a "READY" state how to assign as a global hot spare to rebuild.

Let me know how it goes.

  • Reference DELL 510 RAID 5 - missing 2 HDD (1 foreign)

    Good evening everyone,

This afternoon I did some research on how to put my 2 TB HARD drive to 4 TB of HARD drive on my RAID 5 of 6 HARD drives.

To enter the configuration, I noticed that two of the six disk HARD saying missing then in the Ctrl Mgmt tab one of the HARD drive said foreign.

    How to fix this?

    Thanks in advance.

    Dan

    The Setup is:

    2 x 300 GB RAID1

    6 x 2 TB RAID5

Two of the RAID5 HDD reported missing, one of the two foreigners.

So I've gone on foreign view / highlighted the top level config / foreigner / option Yes or no (yes some)

On which dates back to the first page "Mgmt" it then one of the missing disks on 'ready' and the other ' rebuild '.

He runs out of night to see what happens. Will update.

  • PERC 310 RAID 0 with drive in foreign State

I "inherited" a T5600 with PERC H310 controller with two 500 GB drives, put in place by a former employee in RAID 0 (at least from what I can tell - I don't know why he chose the RAID 0).  After a recent audit of security disk 0 is the 'foreign' State on the screen of PD Mgnt and Drive 1 is online.  I searched and found a lot of info on how to import or clear the foreign configuration, but I don't understand this option when you press F2 on any page.  I can't tell if Drive 1 is bad or just considered "foreign" because they took the cable.  I was not present during the audit, and I'm beginning to wonder if they pulled the cable while the system worked.  He seemed fine after their verification, until I got IO errors when you access certain partitions (Oracle Linux 6.3).  After a reboot, I went into the BIOS H310 config and saw the following:

The VD Mgmt page showed only the disk 0, RAID 0 group (no virtual disk or foreign Physics).

    The foreign view page States:

    • Disk group: 0, RAID 0
    • ID of the virtual disk: 1GB 465,25
    • Disc 01Physics: online: 465,25 GB
    • Disk group: 1, RAID 0
    • Virtual disk ID: 0, 465,25 GB
    • Disk physical 00: online: go 465,25 (foreigner)

The virtual and physical disk for Disk Group 1 properties are grayed out.

The PD Mgmt page shows 00 foreign State and drive 01 State online

I tried swapping the cables and saw the following changes:

    The foreign view page States:

    • Disk group 0, RAID 0
    • Virtual disk ID 1, Go 465,25
    • Disk physical 00: online: 465,25 GB
    • Disk group: 1, RAID 0 (foreigners)
    • Virtual disk ID: 0, 465,25 GB
    • Disc 01Physics: online: go 465,25 (foreigner)

Yet once, 1 group of virtual disk and physical properties are grayed out.

The PD Mgmt page shows 00 State online and drive 01 foreign State

Do I have a bad disc or just a bad virtual drive?  Y at - it a hope of recovering without reinstalling?  Still, I do not get the ability to import on any page of the configuration of the BIOS H310.

    Thank you.

    AZ_Traveler,

You will need to do is to import the foreign configuration. To do this, you will need access to the controller, after, you will be on the VD MGMT page. From there highlight the controller in the list above, once highlight then hit the "F2" and select foreign Config. From there, you'll need to import the foreign Configuration.

After this can access the OS and see if i/o errors continue.

Let me know how it goes.

You must clear the foreign configuration.  Go to storage, PERC, Information/Configuration (link at the top of the page), then foreign/Clear in the menu tasks available for the controller.  Then you can assign the drive as a hot spare to start reconstruction.

  • DiskPart / software RAID - disaster recovery

    Hi guys,.

I have a VMware VM running Windows 2012 R2 DataCenter Edition. I tried to clone a DR test for one of my clients. I was able to start the virtual machine in Recovery Mode and use diskpart to assign the appropriate drive letters, etc. (it is a software RAID 1 mirror) after importation of disks (they appear as foreign at first) and the output.

I have tried a number of tools - however, when system - bottom line - restarts looks disks back to being at reboot - what makes the system unable to boot properly.

Any ideas on how I can get the data from partition table that I put in diskpart persist beyond a reboot?

This issue is beyond the scope of this site (for consumers) and to be sure, you get the best (and fastest) reply, we have to ask either on Technet (for IT Pro) or MSDN (for developers)

  • No option to import foreign disks

I moved an IDE drive in a USB Caddy hooked up to my XP Pro laptop XP Pro machine. It appears in management of disks as a foreign dynamic disk, but when I right click there is no option to import.

    Problem solved

Alternatively, you can solve the problem by converting the dynamic disk to Basic. To convert the disk, use the Dskprob.exe tool.

Important If you do not properly use the Dskprob.exe tool, this process can cause you to lose all the data the disk. This process only works if you have not used one of the new features of dynamic disks. These features include extending a partition or by using the software redundant array of independent Disk (RAID).

    1. Download and install the tools of Support for Microsoft Windows XP. To do this, visit the following Web site:

Note When you install these tools, click Finish when you are prompted to click standard or full. If you click on by default, you need to reinstall the tools. When you reinstall the tools, click optional when you are prompted.

    2. Click Start, click run, type Dskprobe.exe and then click on OK.
    3. In the menu of drives , click the physical drive.

  • Reuse a RAID disk and hot spare procedure

My questions are for a PE R720xd with the PERC RAID internal H710P controller.

I have replaced several RAID drives in the past, but I never did this before, so I was hoping to confirm my procedure for hard drives hot swap. A drive failed on one of my live servers. In the past I would always bring back the server during a maintenance window and replace the drive by using the configuration utility to make sure everything went correctly. This particular server has become a system of very high availability, so I was hoping to use for hot spare option do without bring down the server.

The other issue is that Dell is not in stock on the disk, I need so I intend to use a same car I replaced recently on a server off-production that has already been fixed in a RAID1 in another Dell R720 Server table. Any time, I have never replaced a RAID drive, I always used a new drive out-of-the-box, so I'm also not 100% on how to prepare the drive to use for a new RAID array.

I thought I am brings the donor server down and come off the drive I want to enjoy this the RAID array server using the configuration utility. So a question is - is there anything else I need to do preparation used in car for use in the new table?

With respect to hot-swapping which lead to the new array, is it really as simple as just popping one out and put a new in? Can I do to confirm it has taken - apart from just confirming that the lights blink like crazy during synchronization?

    Thanks for your understanding!

    C.Short,

You can switch the drive, but it will be not just to rebuild there is data on the hard drive. So when this disc is inserted, it will show foreign. You will need to do is to boot to the controller (Ctrl + R) and then CLEAR the foreign Configuration. Once completed, then you will be able to rebuild the disk on the virtual disk, you can do the BIOS of the controller, or from the OpenManage web interface (depending on the operating system).

Let me know if it helps.

  • in foreign car

Hello I have a PERC 6 / i integrated controller. One of the disks had a yellow flashing with an error message on the screen Dell R710 of error 1810. I took the down server reinstall the drive is now flashing a green light. The problem is with Dell Open manage still see the disk that belongs to a RAID 5 as foreign?

Using Dell Diagnostics online shows everything as working properly?

I will not be able to restart and check the controller BIOS for awhile. Here again, I am reluctant to change anything to be sure that there really is a problem.

    Suggestions please

    Hello dwessel2,

You'll need to do is to clear the log of material in open manage.  You will also need to clear the foreign configuration of this drive that reconnect.  This is done, then you leave the drive rebuild.  Once the reconstruction is completed any disc should show also ready & optimal.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • Kaboom's RAID

Howdy.  I have a T720 with a PERC H810 configured as follows.  All the disks are SATA external (custom made) enclosure.  With two cables of SFF-8088 tuned on the disks. So you can not blink a light on a drive for ID.

    RAID 1 (OS):

    SATA 2 x 1 TB drives

    RAID 6 (DATA):

6 x 6 TB SATA disks (red WD)

I check this server every month to drive failure.  RAID 1 has no critical data.  RAID 6 is not critical, but painful recreate data that is on it, so I would save it.

Yesterday, a drive started to make noise.  Sounded like accident bearings or the head.  omreport storage vdisk showed that RAID 1 is 'degraded' - and - RAID 6 was "degraded redundancy".  Check the status of the physical disk has shown however that poth 1 TB drives were very good, and has only a single disk in the RAID 6.  This seemed unusual given that the two vdisks were in a deteriorated condition.  While I have a lot of drives of 1 TB extra on-site I don't have a spare part 6 TB.  I had the next day Amazon a 6 identical to.

This morning I opened the casing of the drive to identify the HOWLER.  It was one of the drives 1 TB in RAID 1.  Get more confusing that the status of pdisk showed still no 1 t disc failed. I decided to rebuild the RAID 1 first of all, if I traded that for a new 1 TB drive.  When I went into the setup PERC and looked at the foreign config, it showed two disks as foreign, the new 1 TB and one of the 6TBs (who were all original, no traded again).  Also, the RAID 6 showed a missing member.  My gut says it was just the bad disk lost disk config on show as well as foreign, and I wanted to study.  I powered down and checked the serial numbers, moved any cabling, other than to check the seats.

Repower the RAID controller has lost all the config.  "All readers of your previous configuration are gone."

I think I'm pretty well sprinkled here.  I plan to try to recreate the berries (without initializing) to get the data, but given that there are some questionable readers (but always enough redundancy), I don't know if this is the right tactic to take.

If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.  Thanks a bundle.

You should have tried to clear the foreign configuration on the disks.

It is not normally advisable to turn off the system while the RAID array is in a degraded state and disks in a foreign configuration.

First of all, try to start the RAID controller BIOS and see if you can be able to import the foreign configuration in order to recover your data. You can try to recreate the table with the original settings, but there is no guarantee that you will recover data required to the foreign State to some readers; and if you did, it may be damaged.

  • Label impossible clearly foreign PS4000

We recently purchased new Dell disks. However, all of the added disk are shown as foreign disks. We followed the instructions to add to the RAID and allow the cancellation of the data. In few seconds the status changed to save and then back to foreign disks. What could be the problem?

You cannot mix them all in the same Member.   You cannot create a new RAIDset using disks only SED.  Readers must be added to the existing RAIDset.    Each member table can have only one policy RAID and it will use all of the available drives.

  • RAID configuration PROBLEM

    Hello

I have a little trouble on a server R610 in RAID5 with 3 disks and RAID H700 card.

The 1st disk in "Foreign" State, the second in 'Fail' and the 3rd en 'Oneline '.

    The virtual disk 'offline '.

Can I do a clear at the level of the 'foreign config' pour rebuild the 1st disk or DO I wait to replace the drive en "failure"?

    Thank you for your response.

    Laurent_Rio,

The first chose you want to do is import the foreign configuration on the disk. (See below pour steps)

This should use the reader to go online after its importation, then proceed to rebuild the defective disk.

Do not erase the foreign, low - configuration you import it. In the BIOS of the controller RAID (Ctrl + R) highlight the controller of the group which includes the virtual disk, para on F2 and is the foreign configuration, then to IMPORT FOREIGN. After the failed drive can automatically start rebuilding, but if not then start the system and see if the data is accessible. If Yes, then you can get a backup, and then launch the reconstruction after.

Let me know how it goes

    *******************************************************************************

The first thing you want to do is to IMPORT the foreign configuration on the disk. (see below for the procedure)

This will cause I hope the reader to go online after it is important and then proceed to rebuild on the failed drive.

Do NOT clear the foreign configuration, remember to import.

Controller raid BIOS (Ctrl-R) highlight the group controller that includes the virtual disk, hit F2 and select foreign Config, and then select IMPORT FOREIGN. After that the failed drive can automatically start to rebuild, but if not then start the system and see if the data is accessible. If Yes, then you can get a backup, and then start the reconstruction later.

  • Using Open manage replace Raid 5 HD

    Everyone,

I must say first that I'm not a person of software.  However, no one in my company has no experience in the Raid arrays, despite having inherited several systems.  I apologize if my questions and follow-ups are unclear.  I turn a little in the darkest of time.

I have a Server System 2003 with a Raid 5 array.  One of my hard drives die on me.  I had two identical disks removed from another computer with its own table.

Using Open manage, I stumbled my way through to get the foreign configuration off this drive and have even allowed.  Now, it's ready state, with the rest of the degraded Raid.  I went to the Virtual Drive section.  For this record, I expect something like rebuild or reconfigure the table or something like that.  Here are the options I see:

    Delete

    Re-branded/decommission dedicated rescue

    Blink

    Unblink

    Change of name

    Change policy

    Replace the drive Member

My question is, how to make the table to add this record and they start using it?  I want to get the table and running and the degraded state.  I thought it was hot, so should I just pull out and push again?

Sorry to be a fool this inexperienced.  Any help would be appreciated.  Unfortunately, I was a little thrown to the Wolves of my group on this one.

    Thank you

    Hello.

It was OK for you to clear the foreign configuration in order to get rid of existing metadata on the drive. Under the selection of available tasks. Assign as dedicated hot spare disk. This will allow the drive to rebuild the table. You can monitor the progress of the reconstruction in the OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA).

  • RAID 5 bad car

I have a RAID 5 and one of the drives went bad. I replaced with a new drive and entered in the controller Config (HUMINT r). I went to the foreign disk tab and hit clear instead of import. Now the reader says ready and I can't do anything other than make a hot spare. How do I make the drive a foreign disk again?

You cannot return the foreign configuration after delete you it. In this case, you do not want to be. If you simply replace a bad drive in a functional table otherwise, you will need to assign as a hot spare to start reconstruction.

If you had imported the foreign configuration, you would play a bare metal full restore from backup right now.
